POP3D Second space 3d printer to be sent to ISS by ESA

European Space Agency is also sending a 3d printer to International Space Station. It will be the second 3d printer in space. The printer is named POP3D and it's developed in Italy. First ISS 3d printer is already working on ISS and was developed by "Made in Space" and delivered by SpaceX.

Here is the video by Altran:

From the source article:
Europe’s very first 3D printer in space is scheduled for installation aboard the ISS next year.
Designed and built in Italy, it will be put to the test as part as ESA astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti’s Futura mission, and is set to reach orbit in the first half of next year. Samantha herself will be launched on her six-month Station assignment on 23 November.
The POP3D Portable On-Board Printer is a small 3D printer that requires very limited power and crew involvement to operate,” explained Luca Enrietti of Altran, prime contractor for the compact printer.

The unit is a cube with 25 cm sides and prints with biodegradable and harmless plastic using a heat-based process.

“Part of the challenge of designing a 3D printer for the Station was to ensure its operation does not affect the crew environment,” added Giorgio Musso of Thales Alenia Space Italy, principal investigator for the project.

Funded by Italy’s ASI space agency, POP3D should take about half an hour to produce a single plastic part, which will eventually be returned to Earth for detailed testing, including comparison with an otherwise identical part printed on the ground.

“There is big potential all along the value chain, to save cost and mass,” noted Reinhard Schlitt, heading OHB’s Engineering Services.

“But right now the way parts are being produced in various different ways. As a satellite manufacturer, we need common standards in place so we can compare competing supplier parts on a like-for-like basis.

“Europe does have a lead in this technology – the latest laser machines are coming from here for export to the US and China – so we should build on that.”

HP Multi Jet Fusion 3d printer is new technology challenger

HP was absent from the 3d printing scene but now the company is back with new additive manufacturing technology called Multi Jet Fusion which promises much improved performance over current market players. It will be interesting to see the response from other companies, competition and new performance milestones will push the entire industry.

Now, this is not you DIY or home 3d printer, but when you look at first paper laser printers that were the size of a room, one could see that size and price can go down until one day you will have a HP desktop 3d printer at your workshop or home office.

HP Multi Jet Fusion main advantages according to manufacturer:

Breakthrough economics
  • Area-wide imaging and fewer steps drive speeds 10 times faster; best-in-class total cost of ownership includes helping reduce energy and waste
New quality levels
  • HP Thermal Inkjet arrays, delivering multiple liquid agents, can drive new levels of accuracy with uniform part strength in all three axis directions
Full-color 3D solutions
  • HP color science expertise can bring the color capabilities of traditional printing into the 3D world

HP Multi Jet Fusion 3d printer. I'm not a fan of the design, it looks like HP's digital camera I owned around 2000s...

Illustration of Multi Jet Fusion process ..

Here is a compilation of videos showing the Hp's new Multi Jet Fusion technology:

In this video you can see the objects printed, the speed is amazing with this multicolored refinery model printed in 15 minutes. Be aware that this is only according to HP's claims, independent review and testing is not available. There are also no information on price of this HP's 3d printer or the price of refill materials.

You can learn more about Multi Jet Fusion here:

HP also released Sprout which combines PC, projector, and 3D scanner. It is a desktop computer aimed at Makers, designers and creative types of all kinds. It features HP Workspace integrated in Windows 8.1 that creates new tool paradigm for 3d object manipulation.

No, it is not first Croatian 3d printer!

Most of the big news blogs on 3d printing scene published a news article about "first Croatian 3d printer" and it was all over our local news portals as major technology breakthrough news.
When I first saw it on TV my reaction was:

IT IS NOT CROATIAN, IT IS CHINESE!!!!! THIS IS B$&&Sh#*!!!!!

Judge for yourself:

Forcebook UltraPrint 3D printer by HG Spot aka. Myriwell 3d printer

One Croatian commentator (yes, you Čop) wrote:
It's not "similar" to the Chinese printer. It is the very same Chinese printer. But for 120 Euro more. This is hardly newsworthy, and being from Croatia I strongly resent this being published in the context of "first Croatian printer" there's nothing first nor Croatian about this. Just a company reselling Chinese stuff at a higher price, trying to rip off people with a crappy printer while the hype is still on.
This is a great summary of the whole situation.

Now, our local Croatian media are not known for their investigative work, they basically take any PR statement and broadcast it so I didn't expect more for them. I also didn't expect any better from HG Spot. I'm just a little sad that there are no competitors in Croatia and that the our public TV isn't promoting DIY culture more.
And I'm disappointed that we are still just sinking deeper in economic crisis as a country and this is not a type of behavior that will help us.

Croatia does have small but vibrant DIY and 3d print community which I hope will grow more in the future and educate more people. Maybe even produce truly first Croatian 3d printer.

Reason TV report on 3d printing: From Guns to Pastries

How 3D Printing Will Change the Way We Make Practically Everything  ...

From video description:
On April 4, 2014, Reason TV attended the Inside 3D Printing Conference and Expo, a three-day event held at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City.
There we caught up with:
Hod Lipson, an engineering professor at Cornell University, who compared the excitement swirling around the 3D printing industry to what it felt like to work in the computer industry in the 1970s.
Brian Quan, the president of X-Object, who predicted that 3D printing will transform everything from toys to screwdrivers by making possible a "new organic creation process."
Aleph Objects' Harris Kenny (a former Reason Foundation policy analyst), who discussed the power of open source design and how 3D printing is allowing scientists to create cheap prosthetics and lab equipment.
Liz von Hasseln, the creative director of food products at 3D Systems, who demonstrated the new Chef Jet, which is the first 3D printer for pastry chefs.
Scott McGowan of Solid Concepts, which created the first 3D-printed metal gun.
For more on how 3D printing will change the economy, read Greg Beato's column from the April 2014 issue of Reason magazine.

Worlds first 3d printed metal gun produced by Solid Concepts

First metal 3d printed gun. This will have impact on industry. There will certainly be exaggerated reaction from public and media with some unnecessary fear mongering.
All parts are DMLS printed except few springs and handles. DMLS machines are VERY expensive and guns like this one are probably produced since decades for various black markets by much cheaper low tech CNC machines.

From company press release:

Solid Concepts, a world leader in 3D Printing services, manufactures the world’s first 3D Printed Metal Gun.
Austin, TX – Solid Concepts, one of the world leaders in 3D Printing services, has manufactured the world’s first 3D Printed Metal Gun using a laser sintering process and powdered metals. The gun, a 1911 classic design, functions beautifully and has already handled 50 rounds of successful firing. It is composed of 33 17-4 Stainless Steel and Inconel 625 components, and decked with a Selective Laser Sintered (SLS) carbon-fiber filled nylon hand grip. The successful production and functionality of the 1911 3D Printed metal gun proves the viability of 3D Printing for commercial applications.
“We’re proving this is possible, the technology is at a place now where we can manufacture a gun with 3D Metal Printing,” says Kent Firestone, Vice President of Additive Manufacturing at Solid Concepts. “And we’re doing this legally. In fact, as far as we know, we’re the only 3D Printing Service Provider with a Federal Firearms License (FFL). Now, if a qualifying customer needs a unique gun part in five days, we can deliver.”
The metal laser sintering process Solid Concepts used to manufacture the 30+ gun components is one of the most accurate additive manufacturing processes available, and more than accurate enough to build the interchangeable and interfacing parts within the 1911 series gun. The gun proves the tight tolerances laser sintering can meet. Plus, 3D Printed Metal has less porosity issues than an investment cast part and better complexities than a machined part. The 3D Printed gun barrel sees chamber pressures above 20,000 psi every time it is fired. Solid Concepts chose to build the 1911 because the design is public domain.
“The whole concept of using a laser sintering process to 3D Print a metal gun revolves around proving the reliability, accuracy and usability of metal 3D Printing as functional prototypes and end use products,” says Firestone. “It’s a common misconception that 3D Printing isn’t accurate or strong enough, and we’re working to change people’s perspective.”
The 3D Printed metal gun proves that 3D Printing isn’t just making trinkets and Yoda heads. The gun manufactured by Solid Concepts debunks the idea that 3D Printing isn’t a viable solution or isn’t ready for mainstream manufacturing. With the right materials and a company that knows how to best program and maintain their machines, 3D printing is accurate, powerful and here to stay.

GE gets 1 kilowatt laser 3d printer to print gas turbine parts

From GE news site:

Over the last decade, engineers at GE Aviation have been experimenting with a new way to make jet engine parts. Rather than cutting, milling and drilling engine components, they weld together thin layers of powdered metal with a 200-watt laser and build parts from the ground up. Now, other businesses are supersizing 3D printing and pushing the technology into new areas.
GE Power and Water recently acquired a laser printer that is five times as powerful as the GE Aviation machine and can work with two lasers at the same time. “We are learning how to use this technology,” says Jon Schaeffer, senior manager for materials and processing engineering for Power and Water. “We’ve got to spread the word and change the design paradigm that metallurgists, designers and manufacturing teams have had for a long time.”
Schaeffer says that the 3D printer will help speed up innovation and test new ideas and designs faster. “We’ve been able to embed new technologies into our components without the messy manufacturing steps normally required,” he says. “We are cutting out months in the development cycle with this technology.”
The printer’s build area is almost a cubic foot, large enough to print gas turbine parts. “The biggest thing that was holding us back was the size of the chamber,” Schaeffer says. “But the chamber volume has grown 50 times over the last five years. It’s almost like Moore’s law for 3D printing.”
Schaeffer, who started at GE two decades ago in GE Aviation, points to his former colleagues as a model for making advanced technologies work. GE Aviation is already printing nozzles for the next-generation LEAP jet engine. Each nozzle used to made from 18 parts welded together. It is now grown as a single piece that is 25 percent lighter than its predecessor.
David Joyce, president and CEO of GE Aviation, says that the technology liberated his business from the limitations of machining. “It gives the designer a whole different palette of colors to paint with, and truly on a whole new canvas,” Joyce says.
Engineers at Power and Water have already used their new machine to design and print a cooling shroud for GE’s latest gas turbine. “There was a time when we could not test new designs and technologies in new parts because we were not able to make them,” Schaeffer says. “3D printing is pointing engineers in the right direction to see if they’ve got a successful concept. It’s really quite exciting.”

Blast from the 3d printing past

News clip from 1989 showing 3d printing. It also shows why patenting technology is so problematic. Imagine if we had open access to the technology for 24 years? We would live in Star Trek world by now. Patents and IP rights are bad bad things ...
