3D Systems ProX DMP 320 Metal 3D Printer

3D Systems released a new industrial metal laser sintering printer: the ProX DMP 320. What is the price? Well, if you have to ask, you probably can not afford it :-)

Planetary Resources 3D prints with real asteroid sourced metal

Planetary Resources is one of the companies who want to mine asteroids for metals and work in the asteroid belt. They will need to work with materials they find there to produce machinery and structures in space.

To develop this technology they have partnered up with 3D Systems to produce a 3d printed metal part with materials for an actual asteroid that hit the Earth. The asteroid (or meteorite) used for the print materials was sourced from the Campo Del Cielo impact near Argentina, and is composed of iron, nickel and cobalt. The machine used to print it was the new 3d Systems ProX DMP 320.

As you can see the object has complex geometry and is simillar to support structures used in satellites.

3D Systems SLAbot-1 Stereolitographic Robotic Manufacturing Cell

SLAbot-1 is a robotic arm which is used as a stereolitography apparatus in a small self-contained manufacturing cell. It enables very fast 3d printing based on resin and projection device and further manipulation of produced object. It is a concept demonstration but it could be used in some future manufacturing setting providing customized 3d printed parts.


3D Systems describe it as:


The SLAbot-1 uses an industrial robotic arm, producing parts in sequence. This modular, assembly-line-ready additive manufacturing can be configured in large arrays and enables distributed, automated, high-speed, customized manufacturing.

SLAbot is clearly based on DENSO Robotics arm.



3d Systems Caputre Mini 3d scanner with blue LED structured light

3D Systems also presented a new high precision 3d scanner: the Capture Mini. It works with blue LED structured light scanner paired with Geomagic software and it is optimized for small parts in industrial / professional design enviroment.

3D Systems presents Cube EKOCYCLE 3d printer that works with filament made from recycled PET bottles




Revolutionary machine or marketing hype? You decide ...

New 3D Systems Cube 3d printer is just presented by will.i.am under Ekocyle brand and it seems like it is using new type of a filament made from 25% PET or 3 recycled PET bottles called rPET.

Partnership with Coca Cola is involved in production of this machine, which makes sense, since Coca Cola is probably the biggest producer of PET bottles that are burden on environment and economy of waste management. It is better to make something out of those bottles then to just bury them in a landfill.

Personally I don't like printers that work only with propitiatory filament cartridges that are usually more expensive then generic filament, but this model gives more incentive to buy for consumers who are motivated by environment protection.
I understand that they want to sell their machines, but if you really want to improve environmental impact of Coca Cola why not sell the filament directly for lower prices?
Also I couldn't find the prince of filament cartridge itself.
One thing is sure: 3D System continues to lead in front of Makerbot-Stratasys who seem to stagnate.

Ultra fast, with full customization of each piece by continuous additive manufacturing on industrial scale.  3D Systems shows their vision in this video with Project Ara being the real-world example of this technology in application.

3D Systems alos claim that they have broken the "magic" barrier of 3d printing being faster then traditional injection molding:



Those are some major changes in industrial scale production!





New 3D System ProJet 1200 prosumer 3d printer aimed at hobbyists





This is big step forward in availability of this technology to home and prosumer users. 3D Systems is entering strong into this market with this product. It is priced at 4900 USD.
This may mark a milestone in moving away from FFF printers for big companies in the field.

As you may notice, this SLA machine has a very small print volume, and it probably originated in dental / jewelry targeted printers. However, as 3D Systems, as a major player moves in this DIY segment with this technology, other big companies (such as Makerbot) will have to follow. There are definitely better SLA machines in the market for home segment, but from smaller companies. FFF 3d printers market is very saturated so DIY home SLA printers could be the next step for the entire industry.

3D Systems already entered this market segment with Projet 1000 / 1500 series, but those machines are bulky and priced over 10000 USD.

One good thing about this is tha we will probably see much cheaper and better high end SLA machines aimed ad DIY users.

He made on more than 60 U.S. patents as well as other patents around the world in the fields of ion optics and rapid prototyping.”

3d Systems on CES 2014: they came, they presented and they won

I was never fan of 3D Systems corporate style of marketing, but they DOMINATED the CES 2014 with technology! They presented many new products and technologies and started to remove barriers between high end and prosumer 3d printing machines with CubeJet sub 5000$ jet 3d printer.
Kudos to you 3D Systems! and please PLEASE drop this crazy proprietary cartridges scheme. Let user have some freedom. I think most users hate that.
They seem light years ahead of Stratasys-MakerBot team who showed only different sized Replicators.

Some cool, big and powerful machines here. 3D Systems is mooving onto production floor with 3d printers more suitable for fully usable long life rugged parts. Also new direst metal printer. They also promote their 3d printing 2.0 in the cloud and distributed printing services.


3D Systems and Motorola partner on project Ara modular smartphone

Motorola (owned by Google) and 3D Systems partner up on modular 3d printed Ara smartphone. Idea behind it that you will able to make a custom smartphone with exchangeable and upgradeable modules.

There is no published information on the price, but it is probably very very high (for regular person).





3D Systems Sense low cost 3d scanner

It is low-cost, it is high performance, it is game changer, it has integrated Phaser, it makes great cappuccino, it is priced at 399 $. But seriously,  it looks great, if early adopters review it as such, I'm getting one.

Shannon Morse interview with Cathy Lewis from 3D Systems presenting their Cube 3d printer on CES 2012.
It is expected to hit the market April-May 2012 with price of some 1299 $. It works with their www.Cubify.com page that will sell designs and give cut to the designers. It looks like more market oriented approach, not so open source "diy geeks club" as we are used until now ...
