AKER open source DIY plant beds and other gardening equipment made by CNC from plywood

As I am getting more interested in CNCing wood I'll post more about various DIY CNC projects.

My retired father is now a beekeeper so I found Open Source Beehives. Since they don't have LR type of beehives we gave up on the idea of making them or buying a large CNC mill (we would need to do some saving on family level to afford it). Also it keeps my father occupied as he makes the beehives himself by hand from old wood pallets.

Now that team released AKER DIY plant beds you can produce with your CNC from a single sheet of 1200 x 2400 plywood sheet.

It's an interesting idea and my wife is nagging me for ages that we should start to use some sort of raised beds in our large garden, so maybe I should start to save up to finally buy parts to make my own CNC.

CNC is very wide field ... so many projects. Can anyone point me where to start with research on how to build CNC big enough to process standard plywood sheet?

PERsonalised FOod using Rapid MAnufacturing for the Nutrition of elderly ConsumErs - 3d printed food for elderly and disabled




This is a first practical real-life application of 3d printed food that makes sense to me and probably has some commercial future. The project has a wide consortium and has received 3 million euro financing from EU FP/ program.

From project description:
The main idea of the PERFORMANCE project is to develop and validate a holistic, personalised food supply chain for frail elderly persons living either in nursing homes, ambient assisted living facilities or at home (visited by nursing services) facing swallowing and/or masticating problems.
The supply “chain” in this case will resemble a loop, with the elderly consumers forming the initial link (providing info on personal preference and needs) as well as the final link (consumption of the personalised food). As a result of the PERFORMANCE project, an overall concept will be available which allows the automated manufacture and supply of personalised, specially textured food for frail and elderly people.
The key question is: “How can personalised nutrition contribute to improving the health of frail elderly people facing swallowing and/or masticating problems and dignified aging in their sunset years?” 
To answer this question, the PERFORMANCE concept will cover the whole supply chain from the food producer to the ready-to-eat meal at point of consumption – whether nursing home or at home. Focus will be put on personalised food for people with mastication and swallowing problems.
The main idea of the PERFORMANCE project is to develop and validate a holistic, personalised food supply chain for frail elderly persons living either in nursing homes, ambient assisted living facilities or at home (visited by nursing services) facing swallowing and/or masticating problems.

So, what has become of this project? Are there any results? It's hard to find any. I found only this video and article that presents a tomato sauce dispenser that doesn't look like a 3d printer:

Was this project successful? Or maybe it was just a waste of tax payers money ... I would like to know more ...

No, it is not a fruit 3d printer!

Hype machine is in action again with this "fruit 3d printer" contraption. Let us give some perspective to this:

  1. It doesn't print actual fruit
  2. Only "fruit" "printed" is a "raspberry" or to be more blunt, probably the only shape you can get from tiny spheres is raspberry. It is not even convincing raspberry. 
  3. It prints with tiny spheres of fruit paste or puree
  4. All the parts of the machine look as made from technology that exist for some time and it is open sourced (any 3d printer + syringe extruder like Cellstuder)

Cambridge design company Dovetailed is today launching its 3D fruit printer, creating ‘fruit’ you can eat.
The company, which is working with Microsoft in Cambridge, says it takes just seconds to print an apple or a pear, or any other type of fruit.
The printer uses a molecular-gastronomy technique called spherification. It combines individual liquid droplets with different flavours into a fruit shape.
It is aimed at chefs, foodies and anyone interested in making creative dining experiences. No specialist knowledge of cuisine or molecular-gastronomy is required, and, the fruit produced is all organic.
On of the commentators got the point of the technology with the touch of sarcasm (aka. in the correct way):
"So you basically have to load it with apple in order to print an apple? Ingenious!"
The technology could be very useful for some specific purposes and niche markets but no one benefits from the marketing hype.

THIS IS AWESOME! Pancake printer! wohooooo! I love pancakes, I just made pancakes for breakfast this morning (we call them here "American" pancakes since ours are somewhat different).

BotBQ is an open source barbecue extruder for your 3d printer.  It is basically big powered culinary syringe that extrudes meat into shapes.

How to print with chocolate on your DIY 3d printer

Jonathan Keep is well known for his Delta clay printer. In this video he shows low-tech method to 3d print shapes from chocolate at your home. He made an extruder from a syringe which is air pressure powered from regular soda bottle and bike pump. Ingenious!

New Polypropylene based food-safe 3d printing filament by GermanRepRap

Polypropylene (PP) filament is semi-crystalline thermoplastics which is produced according to US FDA regulations and the relevant EU standards. Basically, it is made so you can print plates, cups, beakers, food containers, spoons and other food serving utensils.
This filament can be used with all printers that have a 3mm hotend and it comes in black color (very appetizing color). 2,1kg spool is priced at 99,95 euro and the 750g spool is priced at 54,95 euro.
Now, maybe the material itself is food safe, however, when you push it trough the hot extruder and deposit it two food un-safe things could happen:
  1. The 3d printed object could have small (micro) pores where bacteria could develop and get into your food
  2. You could get some heavy metals residue from your brass hot end.
The topic of food safety and 3d printed thermoplastics should be researched further, I don't think that we will see much 3d printing for everyday food containers on regular basis. Probably the most people will use it as novelty gimmicky thing.

Still, it is good to see that food related filament technology is advancing.

AJ TV report on Foodini food 3d printer by Natural Machines


A Spanish company called Natural Machines has invented a way to print food using a 3D printer.The $1,400 printer, called 'Foodini', builds up layers of different ingredients, then pumps out the final product ready for cooking.The machine uses capsules of fresh, unprocessed ingredients and is intended to get more people preparing additive-free food in very little time.Al Jazeera's Sonia Gallego reports from Barcelona.

PetBot - open source 3d printable remote pet interaction and treat dispenser

As a dog owner (of very very naughty dog) I see the full benefit of this project. I'll build it when it is available (I'v searched around but found no files or instructions). Theoretically it is easy to DIY a simillar project, but I'll wait little bit more ...

Many people say that insects are food of the future and will solve world food problems since they are much more efficient in converting plant matter into protein.
