R-CNC DIY CNC Mill with 3D Printed Parts

RoMaker from France developed and published the R-CNC mill plans. It is made from 3d printed parts and aluminum structure elements. It looks easy to make with well documented build instructions. The cost of it should be relatively affordable and cheap to make. Eletronics is based on Ramps 1.4






























Other key features:
  • It also has 4 rubber pads at each angle, anti-vibration and anti scratch.
  • The electronics are integrated into the machine and it has a front USB port to connect a computer to the Ramps 1.4 if necessary without dismantling everything.
  • Clean installation thanks to dragchains
  • The pressure of all bearings on the square tubes is fully adjustable
  • Very high torque for Y moving thanks to a nema motor 23 multiplied by 3 with pulley 20×60 teeth
  • Integrated LED lighting
  • Easy mounting with printable drilling templates
  • Tested successfully on wood and plastic at 700mm / min and passes of 2mm, the measurements are perfect at 5 / 100th of mm, the diagonals of the squares are equal, the round ones are round!

rBot 3D Printable CNC Mill with IKEA Work Surface

Michael Reitter developed a homemade 3D printable CNC mill which uses a IKEA MALM table as working surface. Probably the coolest IKEA hack ever.

Someone note in the comments that this is a CNC router. So, what is a different between CNC mill and CNC router?

"A CNC router will usually have a large X and Y range and short Z... A router will typically be able to do soft materials like wood, plastic, and maybe aluminum... But overall, it won't have the most rigid structure (like this one which is 3d printed)

A CNC Mill will have a relatively smaller X and Y with a larger Z than a router... A mill will be able to cut hard materials like steel... And thus will have a very rigid structure so that it can accurately cut those materials."

Hacking and Upgrading Cheap Chinese 3020 and 3040 CNCs

I plan to buy a cheap or even second-hand Chinese 3020 or 3040 CNC mill so I looked around to find a way to improve it with parts I already have like Arduino or some simple electronic upgrades. I found two interesting guides:

How to design and CNC cut wooden enclosure for your 3d printer

GuruBrew made an excellent tutorial video with step-by-step instructions on how to design and CNC cut wooden enclosure for your 3d printer. Video is very detailed and will guide you trough the entire process with valuable tips & tricks, software and tools used.

This is what the enclosure looks like:

































The enclosure is made out of .25 an .5 inch MDF wood and acrylic (plexiglass) plastic. It was cut ona Techno CNC router. It is designed in Solid Works and CAM software was VCarve Pro and Mach3. It was made for Maker Farm Prusa i3, but the design could fit or be addapted to most machines.

R & B rapid production UG hybrid 3D printer, cnc mill and 3D scanner from Germany
















This new hybrid is developed and sold by "R & B rapid production UG". The German start up spun off from bbw college that has been in 3D printing business for some time.

This machine is combination of 3D printer, cnc mill and 3d scanner in one device. It is marketed as "universal machine". The toolheads can be exchanged very quickly in two minutes. 3d printing volume is 775 x 420 x 140 mm.
Full kit with all the toolheads is in higher price range of some 4000 euro, but it is more aimed at small and medium companies or high end prosumers.

Printrbot shows their first desktop CNC router! Update: CNC Beta 01 presented





This is a big surprise and big news for the scene! Printrbot is expanding into desktop CNC market with this preview of their router. We want more information!
Developing machine like this is logical step since there are many similarities with their core 3d printer products.

Printrbot Founder and CEO Brook Drumm was on hand at MakerCon today to reveal a beta of the upcoming Printrbot CNC router. While it's targeted as a tool for beginner CNC'ers, the machine is quite capable for maker-pros alike. It can cut wood, plastic and aluminum at "respectable speeds," according to Brook.

Update:

Brook just presented their CNC machine that will be able to cut metal. The name of limited production machine is CNC Beta 01 which will be produced in 20 units series only and will be priced at 1499 USD. It has an unique z xis movement where the entire gantry changes the high.




I think we will see more and more DIY CNC machines as digital fabrication and home manufacturing grows further ....

Multec MutiRap 3d printer, engraver and mill hybrid from Germany

I found this combo machine from Germany while following Mathias Dietz on Youtube, since he made a software that powers it.
It is 3d printer, engraver and mill hybrid.

Matsuura Lumex Avance 25 hybrid metal laser sintering and high precision milling machine

This is not your Prusa Mendel. This is the Godzilla of advanced industrial 3d printers, a hybrid metal laser sintering and high precision milling machine.
It can produce highly precise medical and dental implants and high end custom aerospace industry parts. The structures can have intricate internal structure that can decrease weight, improve cooling or add advanced structural properties.
Lumex Avance can also print complex molds and casts with integrated cooling for high cycle injection molding.
Typically, milling produces debris, or chips, of removed material that vary in size. However, the LUMEX machine utilizes dry cutting, meaning no coolant is used. For this reason, the cutters are very small and the machining metal removal is a fine powder. Thus, the porosity is theoretically equal to the particle size of the powder and gets incorporated into the powder mix. Usually, no removal of milling chips is needed.

Machines like this are the future of manufacturing which is already here, just not evenly distributed.

Matsuura will go to north American market with their  hybrid 3d printer. They plan to sell ten machines in 2014 which cost 800,000 - 1,000,000 USD per piece. This reminds me of the time in early history of computing when IBM executives claimed that the world needs only 8 computers.

Tested.com gives us the tour of Otherfab and presentation of Othermill, tabletop precision mill.  Othermill team member talks about design for milling and connection with 3d printing.  Primary job of the Othermill is PCb milling, but it can also mill aluminum and make molds from machinable wax.
Very cool device, perfect in synergy with a 3d printer.
There is a trend of hybrid machines with both 3d printing and milling options in one machine, but designated machines can probably do the specific job they were designed for much better.
