CNC Router& Laser Machine Improve Stone Carving

People like stone, since stone is a natural material, color variations, and veining are perfectly normal, and no pieces are exactly alike. Carving stone by hand may requires you have art basic knowledge, and it takes a rather long time to practice on it. For a stone-work shop, owner may hire stone worker with rich experience or wait a worker to practice and practice and get skilled. #stone carving
Well, if there is a machine to assist you, whatever you make stone carving as hobby or business, it will improve the stone carving work rather efficiently on the speed and precision and almost without mistake, saving you a lot of time and cost.

OMNI offeres two kinds of cnc machine for stone carving, and these two cnc machines can reach different result on the stone pieces.

1.CNC Router

How it works?
CNC router is a carving head and carving tool, rather powerful, since the carving head power could up to 3kw, 4.5kw, 6kw and even more.  You only need to design the pattern you gonna carve on the stone, then give command to CNC controller, then the machine will "draw out" the pattern you want. See below its working video, it is tombstone carving:
What stone I can carve by this machine?
1)Soapstone Available in many different colors and textures. Polishes to a smooth finish and scratches leave a white mark which makes it easy to texture.
2)Alabaster-I recommend this as a starting stone both because it is easy to carve and because it is extremely beautiful.
3)Limestone  This stone does not polish well but is one of the best stones for showing details carved into it.
4)Marble  It is a hard stone, worth for you to work out it by cnc machine.
5)Granite

2. Laser Machine

How it works?
Laser machine fits laser tube, laser engraving melts the surface of the stone. It works directly on the material. Consequently, there is no need for producing a stencil.
What Stone I can Carve by Laser Machine?
Laser engraving on stone is particularly suited for polished, possibly dark natural stones, such as granite, marble, ceramic or slate. The more homogeneous and fine-grained the stone, the better the results produced by stone engraving. But thanks to their smooth surface, even pebble stones can be etched well with the laser.

What other materials these two kinds of cnc machine can process?
They can engrave a wide range of material, such as wood, acrylic, plastic, leather, foam etc. More information, you may visit our webiste www.omnicnc.com

Hacking and Upgrading Cheap Chinese 3020 and 3040 CNCs

I plan to buy a cheap or even second-hand Chinese 3020 or 3040 CNC mill so I looked around to find a way to improve it with parts I already have like Arduino or some simple electronic upgrades. I found two interesting guides:

Upgrading 3020 (and other models) with Arduino, GRBL and CNC Shield V3

Detailed guide by EricAusome can be found at:

http://www.instructables.com/id/3020-CNC-Arduino-GRBL-CNC-Shield-V3/?ALLSTEPS

John Lauer hacked his 3040 to run with ChiliPeppr and TinyG.

Space Race with 3D Printed Rocket Engines Continues

Race for space is getting more heated and 3d printed parts are becoming present in every major project from rocket engines to 3d printed satellites. Everyone is competing: big government agencies, private companies, student groups and private citizens. We have even seen 3d printed open source liquid fuel rocket engine.
3D printed rocket engines can be very fast in production and affordable even as low as 500 USD for the open source version printed by external service provider.

Here are some new developments:

Vulcan 1 rocket engine developed by SEDS team

SEDS (Students for the Exploration and Development of Space) is well known for their previous successful Tri-D 3d printed rocket motor developments. Now they are crowd-funding further development of bigger Vulcan 1 3d printed rocket engine and launch their Vulcan 1 rocket over 10000 feet.

NASA has developed a full size 3d printed copper engine

NASA successfully laser sintered full scale copper rocket engine.

They write:
“Building the first full-scale, copper rocket part with additive manufacturing is a milestone for aerospace 3-D printing,” said Steve Jurczyk, associate administrator for the Space Technology Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “Additive manufacturing is one of many technologies we are embracing to help us continue our journey to Mars and even sustain explorers living on the Red Planet.”

Numerous complex parts made of many different materials are assembled to make engines that provide the thrust that powers rockets. Additive manufacturing has the potential to reduce the time and cost of making rocket parts like the copper liner found in rocket combustion chambers where super-cold propellants are mixed and heated to the extreme temperatures needed to send rockets to space.

A selective laser melting machine in Marshall’s Materials and Processing Laboratory fused 8,255 layers of copper powder to make the chamber in 10 days and 18 hours. Before making the liner, materials engineers built several other test parts, characterized the material and created a process for additive manufacturing with copper.
“On the inside of the paper-edge-thin copper liner wall, temperatures soar to over 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit, and we have to keep it from melting by recirculating gases cooled to less than 100 degrees above absolute zero on the other side of the wall,” said Chris Singer, director of the Engineering Directorate at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, where the copper rocket engine liner was manufactured. “To circulate the gas, the combustion chamber liner has more than 200 intricate channels built between the inner and outer liner wall. Making these tiny passages with complex internal geometries challenged our additive manufacturing team.”

“Copper is extremely good at conducting heat,” explained Zach Jones, the materials engineer who led the manufacturing at Marshall. “That’s why copper is an ideal material for lining an engine combustion chamber and for other parts as well, but this property makes the additive manufacturing of copper challenging because the laser has difficulty continuously melting the copper powder.”

Rocket Lab Electron Launch Vehicle

Rocket Lab is a private company that wants to provide cheap satellite rocket launch system for small satellites. Their Electron Launch Vehicle  rocket is made with carbon fiber and uses electrically powered 3d printed motor.

Rocket Lab uses Rutherford rocket engine that is almost entirely 3d printed:

Rocket Lab’s flagship engine, the 4,600lbf Rutherford, is a turbo-pumped LOX/RP-1 engine specifically designed for the Electron Launch Vehicle.
Rutherford adopts an entirely new electric propulsion cycle, using electric motors to drive its turbopumps, and is the first oxygen/hydrocarbon engine to use 3D printing for all primary components.

China has tested a 3d printed rocket engine part

China is making a progress forward, according to the report by 3ders.org:
Engineers from Institute 41 (part of the China Aerospace Science and industry Corporation) have already successfully tested an engine ignition device that has been created using 3D printing technology.

This is reportedly the first time Chinese engineers tested a 3D printed rocket component, but it seems to be very suitable for the job. Shell structures typically used for the ignition components in rocket engines are very difficult to design and produce, and are very costly and time-consuming to create. Engineers felt themselves bottlenecked, so a team from the ignition technology research laboratory of Institute 41 began incorporating 3D printing into their R&D process.
In collaboration with local manufacturers of 3D printing equipment, these engineers eventually and successfully 3D printed the first set of shells for ignition devices. To ensure these shells met all design requirements, researchers produced hundreds of 3D printed test samples, which were submitted to various extensive testing sequences.

We live in very interesting times... where will you boldly go?

KUKA robotic arm turned into six axis 3d printer produces self supporting floating structures

While six axis 3d printer is nothing new, they are quit rare. There have been even robotic arms hacked to print in all axis even with metal like MX3D Metal. Still I find this robot to be more aesthetic and organic in operation.
This machine prints self supporting floating structures inspired by spider webs in same ABS like most common DIY 3d printers and it is even Arduino controlled. It is based on KUKA industrial robotic arm and it is developed inside "Digital Future" project.

Project description:
"Digital Future" Shanghai Summer Workshop 2014
Instructor: YU Lei (Tsinghua) / Philip. F. YUAN(Tongji) / Panagiotis Michalatos(GSD)
Collaborator: SHI Ji / LIU Xun / LUO Ruihua / CUI Yuqi
The project, Robotic 6-Axis 3D Printing, is a highly-integrated installation combining robotic system, 3D printing technique and interactive interface. It aims to provide the designer a digital method to eliminate the line between "Designing" and "Fabricating". In this case, architects provides more than just drawings and construction notes, however, they are capable of fabricating their work quickly and precisely by themselves
Most of today's researches and applications of robotic fabrication are limited to replicating human labor and raising efficiency of manufacturing. However, in the project of Robotic 6-Axis 3D Printing, we developed a fabrication strategy learning and emulating the law of nature (referring to Chinese philosophy "师法自然 ").
By studying the material and structure performance of 3D form in nature, we figured out a way to incorporate biomimetic fabrication strategy into 3D printing process. And by designing the special robotic-end effector (Tooling) and utilizing the great flexibility and accuracy of KUKA robot system, the biomimetic fabricating process has been fully realized.
The whole process embodied the concept of "Digital Craftsmanship", which emphasis the personality of designer and allows them to closely integrated "Designing" and "Fabricating".
Here is video of the robotic craftsman in action:

OverLord multicolor Delta 3d printer

OverLord is a new multicolor Delta 3d printer made by DreamMaker. The specifications look very impressive but what I really like is the design.

Comparison of Overlord Pro to other market 3d printers:

Here are OverLord and OverLord Pro technical specifications:

Company homepage: http://www.dreammaker.cc/

OverLord had a very successful Kickstarter where they got £254,825 pledged of £10,000 goal:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1122205541/overlord-3d-printer-multi-color-smart-stylish

Here is a Kickstarter video:

It makes some nice prints (but there are no independent tests or review)... There were many 3d printer producers and Kickstarters that promised full color 3d printing, but results were disappointing or not delivered ...

ImproTable 1000 large 3d printer with multifeed mixing nozzle and Twin 3d printer

ImproTable 1000 is a big custom made DIY 3d printer developed by James Chang. It has 1m x 1m printing surface and unique mixing extruder with five filament input ports. It mixes the color of filaments and looks like it is working fine and fast.
There are no details or design plans of this machine released.

Here is ImproTable 1000 (great name btw ...) in action:

Here is a focus on the quint-extruder:

On James YouTube channel there is also a video of Twin 3d printer that has two separate independent dual extruders:

Hopefully we will find out more about James Chang and his machines in the future ...

Five filament  types of different colors go in the nozzle, what would happen when different filament materials would be mixed?

Esun nozzle cleaning filament

Shenzhen based Esun company sells the filament they developed that should clean your extruder and nozzle.
Composition of this filament is unknown but it is probably similar to nylon. Nylon filament is used in a cleaning process where it is extruded at 200 C and then cooled to 135 C which hardens it and makes it attract and clean up all the particles that clog up the extruder. Like all similar cleaning methods, this one can also fail.

There is not much information or reviews available around, so if you know something more about this or have any practical experience with it  let me know ...

Produce homepage:

3d Bioprinting introduction, possibilities, problems and current state of technology

All you wanted to know about bioprinting and 3d printing with living cells summarized in 20 minute video. Must-watch if you are interested in the topic. Wei gives great overview of the field and current state of bioprinting technology which is truly amazing with incredible future possibilities (and problems to be solved).

Speaker: Prof. Wei Sun, Tsinghua University / Xin Innovation Workshop,

Presentation held at Tel Aviv University, 19 - 20.5.2014.

I found presentation by Prof. Wei Sun in PDF format similar to the one in the video which is great reference material on bioprinting:

http://nsfam.mae.ufl.edu/Slides/Sun.pdf

Conclusions are important and probably there are many scientists working on it right now:

In future we need the following to ensure 3d printed organs:
  • A new generation of biomaterials - Bio-Ink: go with cells (structure as cell delivery medium), grow with cells (support as cell ECM) and function with cells (as biomolecules);
  • Developmental Engineering (vs. Developmental Biology) to fill the biological knowledge gap;
  • Bio-3DP manufacturing tools: viable, reliable and reproducible, and capable of making heterogeneous structures;
  • 4-D 3DP model: embedded time into Bio-3DP model: printing Stem Cells with control released molecules for complex tissues, Organs, Cellular Machines and Human-on-a-Chip devices

No, it is not first Croatian 3d printer!

Most of the big news blogs on 3d printing scene published a news article about "first Croatian 3d printer" and it was all over our local news portals as major technology breakthrough news.
When I first saw it on TV my reaction was:

IT IS NOT CROATIAN, IT IS CHINESE!!!!! THIS IS B$&&Sh#*!!!!!

Judge for yourself:

Forcebook UltraPrint 3D printer by HG Spot aka. Myriwell 3d printer

One Croatian commentator (yes, you Čop) wrote:
It's not "similar" to the Chinese printer. It is the very same Chinese printer. But for 120 Euro more. This is hardly newsworthy, and being from Croatia I strongly resent this being published in the context of "first Croatian printer" there's nothing first nor Croatian about this. Just a company reselling Chinese stuff at a higher price, trying to rip off people with a crappy printer while the hype is still on.
This is a great summary of the whole situation.

Now, our local Croatian media are not known for their investigative work, they basically take any PR statement and broadcast it so I didn't expect more for them. I also didn't expect any better from HG Spot. I'm just a little sad that there are no competitors in Croatia and that the our public TV isn't promoting DIY culture more.
And I'm disappointed that we are still just sinking deeper in economic crisis as a country and this is not a type of behavior that will help us.

Croatia does have small but vibrant DIY and 3d print community which I hope will grow more in the future and educate more people. Maybe even produce truly first Croatian 3d printer.

New videos of 3d printed houses from China

Two new videos emerged of ten 3d printed houses from China showing the process in more detail and company behind it. It looks like China really leads the way in this filed now. Their technology prints house modules off-site and then connects in the open. They also stick to traditional house shapes. Roofs are not printed due to technology limitations.
One other important aspect is that they use construction waste as material, which could also lower the prices and help to preserve the environment which is getting very badly damaged in China.

They were developed by the Suzhou Yingchuang Science and Trade Development Co., Ltd. in east China's Jiangsu Province and are currently used as offices.

Here is the first post about the houses:

Clone wars of 3d drawing pens: 3D YAYA, Myriwell 3D Pen and Makible Scribble vs. 3Doodler

There are several 3d drawing pens available, with 3Doodler being the market leader and several Asian clones.
3D YAYA claims it was the first 3d drawing pen on the market. They claim they shipped their product before 3Doodler. More about that claim can be found here:
http://www.3ders.org/articles/20130808-3dyaya-3doodler-chinese-clone-started-shipping.html

Main difference between 3Doodler and 3D Yaya is that Yaya uses 1,75 mm filament vs. 3 mm filament of 3Doodler. In other aspects it is almost identical clone ...

Some of its users claim it is similar or even better then the original. It was sold cheaper then 3Doodler but at the moment I can find only that it is more pricey then 3Doodler but 3Doodler is on pre-order and unavailable since they are delivering their Kickstarter orders!?!?!?

So, if you want a 3d drawing pen now 3D Yaya looks like a viable alternative.

You can see it on Amazon when you click on widget bellow:

http://www.3dyaya.com/

Some of the users say that YaYa is sold more cheaply 40-60 USD in Asia but there is is named "3Doodler".

Another competitor available on the market is Myriwell 3D Pen. Here is the review:

It is even cheaper then 3d Yaya and the reviewer writes:

This one turned out to be a nice surprise because I was not expecting this make and model because I had ordered one of the older 3Doodler clones. Nonetheless, this pen doesn't need to pause frequently to regain working temperature (like the 3Doodler does), and it feeds filament very well. It uses 1.75mm diameter ABS filament that has become the standard for fused deposition modeling 3D printing. The only issue we've seen so far is that it is difficult to print in the air as the 3Doodler can.
You can buy it here:

Here is Makible Scribble demonstrated couple a months before 3Doodler went into sales. They claim the video was made in time when 3Doodler Kickstarter begun. They also claim it features their propitiatory heating technology which makes it dangerously hot only at the small area on the tip. It looks like the Scribble never went into full marketing and sales.

China leads the way (maybe) in low cost 3d printed houses

This story is interesting and somewhat strange. Over at 3ders.org they published an article about 10 3d printed houses that were made in one day in China.
Since it was published on April 1st some people thought it was a joke. There are photographs but third-party references are missing.
It is still feasible that it is real story since China leads the way in many technologies (in they own way) ...

From the source article:

A group of 3D printed houses, 200 m2 each, recently appears in Shanghai, China. These building were created entirely out of concrete using a gigantic 3D printer, and each costs only 30,000 RMB ($4,800).

The company behind these 3D printed building, Shanghai WinSun Decoration Design Engineering Co, said it has for years been working on developing the system and its materials. The company owns 77 national patents of construction materials, such as glass fiber reinforced gypsum and special glass fiber reinforced cement.

While Hobbyist models of 3D printers are currently available for only a few hundred dollars and lets users feed plastics and polymers into a machine, the company takes this technology to a bigger level. Using concrete, instead of plastic, WinSun wants to revolutionize the way homes and other structures are built.
WinSun's 150(L) x 10(W) x 6.6(H) m gigantic 3D printer is capable of printing entire building within hours. The 'ink' it used is based on high-grade cement and glass fiber. Like traditional 3D printers, the system carefully spills out those materials layer by layer, consistently building upwar
In addition, it is very impressive that the printing material is recycled construction waste, industrial waste and tailings.
WinSun plans to build 100 recycling factories in the country, one in every 300km, to collect and transform the waste into materials for 3D printing through special handling, processing and separation technology. "There will not be any waste from the construction of new buildings." said WinSun CEO Ma YiHe. WinSun expects 3D printing will save construction companies up to 50% on the cost.
