How to reduce rattling noise on your 3d printer

Tech2C, an Aussi 3d printing youtube, made this video where he shows how to eliminate and reduce the noise, vibration or rattling for his 3d printer.

He uses a HyperCube 3D Printer but his guide is applicable for almost any machine. Used upgrades are rubber feet, foam insulation, stepper motor dampeners or shock absorbers and TMC 2100 stepper drivers with stealthChop mode.

There is a great comment thread under that video with many additional ideas.

Cool 3D Printable MGA Speaker with Laser Cut Plywood Grill

Here is another cool 3d printable speaker with modern design and the front cover that is laser cut from plywood with different design patterns. It is driven by RaspberryPi and you could probably install any compatible media center software.

Creators describe it as:
This 3d printed speaker is designed at the course Mechatronics Design at the Technical University of Denmark, in collaboration with Bang&Olufsen Create.
In a group of five: Karoline Gustaffson, Mads Olesen, Frederikke Foss, Christian Lundberg and Nicoline Hvidt, we designed, printed, cut and build the speaker, with guidance from our teachers and cooperates from B&O.
The speaker is meant for the kitchen where it can be put on the wall or laid on a table. It is designed so that the front cover can easily be taken on and off so the speaker reflects the specific mood. It is also a great opportunity for customizing the speaker.

Cool vintage omnidirectional speaker design you can 3d print

While checking out new designs on Youmagine, I found a 3d printable copy of vintage omnidirectional Harman Kardon HK-25 loudspeakers. Each speaker consists of a top and bottom part. The bottom is designed to hold a 50mm "metallic" driver speaker that can be found in many cheap "iPod" speaker docks.

This will probably bi my next 3d print for a small home sound system.

Here is the link to Youmagine where you can find the files:

Speakers were designed by Jason J. Gullickson:  https://www.youmagine.com/jjg

It makes me wonder what is the copyright law on industrial design?

Make your own 3D printable handheld tractor beam emitter

Asier Marzo, a researcher at Bristol University, made this amazing project where you can make your own DIY handheld tractor beam. Currently it holds only small objects like liquid droplets or small insects.
It is Arduino controlled, cheap to make and uses ultrasonic sound emitters to produce the tractor field. You can make it for some 70 USD and with basic electronics skills. Ideal educational or school science project.

Here is a video of the device in action with some construction instructions:

It is like simplified home made sonic screwdriver from Doctor Who :-) Here you can see a small red liquid droplet floating in 3d printed sphere that holds ultrasonic transducers.

New fully 3d printed DIY speaker by Ted Kessler

Ted Kessler published overview and testing of his fully 3d printed speaker.

He writes:
This is an experiment in inventing a new tone as a tool for musicians. Speakers were invented between the 1860s-70s and have more or less been constructed with the same materials since. There was something interesting to me about reproducing a classic design with a cutting-edge technology and modern materials, so I did that.
As the speaker's utilitarian and scientific roles have been fulfilled for decades and are now used as art tools, I wanted to treat them as art tools.
The printed parts were done on a consumer-level Rigidbot FFF printer.
There's still development to be done on this project and I look forward to it!

It doesn't sound great, but hey, it is not the reason it was made ...

FormLabs wants to rule in 2015 and they demonstrate it with a fully resin 3d printed speaker project

FormLabs has some resolutions for 2015 and they have made a fully 3d printable speaker project made from resins with different properties. Key resin property for the speaker is flexibility. Improved resolution and optimized support systems help also.

Demonstration of 3d printed nylon saxophone

Olaf Diegel usually makes 3d printed guitars, but now he made a saxophone.

Saxophone data:
The saxophone has 41 components excluding all the springs and screws, It is printed in nylon, on a SLS machine, and weighs less than a quarter of a real sax (575 grams vs 2.5 Kg. Weight might go up a tad once painted, though, but still a lot less than a metal one).

3d printed interactive speakers by Disney Research

Disney Research is rely pushing many new inventive 3d printing technologies and projects. Looks like the next generation of toys will be 3d printed.
This is a 3d printable speaker that can reproduce hearable sound and interact with your computer by emitting a sound that human hearing can not perceive.

From video description:
Authors:
Yoshio Ishiguro, Ivan Poupyrev

Abstract:

We propose technology for designing and manufacturing interactive 3D printed speakers. With the proposed technology, sound reproduction can easily be integrated into various objects at the design stage and little assembly is required.
The speaker can take the shape of anything from an abstract spiral to a rubber duck, opening new opportunities in product design. Furthermore, both audible sound and inaudible ultrasound can be produced with the same design, allowing for identifying and tracking 3D printed objects in space using common integrated microphones. The design of 3D printed speakers is based on electrostatic loudspeaker technology first explored in the early 1930s but not broadly applied until now. These speakers are simpler than common electromagnetic speakers, while allowing for sound reproduction at 60 dB levels with arbitrary directivity ranging from focused to omnidirectional.

F-F-Fiddle 3d printable electric fiddle by David Perry

The F-F-Fiddle (pronounced eff-eff-fiddle) is a full size electric violin that can be produced using common home 3D printing equipment. Total bill of materials (BOM) cost of the instrument is currently about $250 if you print the parts yourself.
There are a few non-printable parts: the strings, a drill rod used as a truss rod, tuners and  the piezo pickups. Smooth neck parts on curved fingerboard are quite the challenging thing to optimally design and  print.
The F-F-Fiddle was designed in Autodesk's Fusion 360, and the source files are available on the Fusion 360 platform.

Ultrasonic particle levitation - could it be used for 3d printing?

I found a video demonstration of small particles levitating in air held and manipulated by ultrasonic field.

My first thought was: this could be used in 3d printing!

Particles could be manipulated and held in shape by this ultrasound technology and then melted together by laser or ultrasound energy itself. I know it is far fetched theory ... but somehow I think it could be done ...

Ultrasonic technology is already used in high-end metal 3d printing by Fabrisonic:

http://diy3dprinting.blogspot.com/2013/07/ultrasonic-metal-3d-printing.html

And similar technology is also used to weld plastic:

http://diy3dprinting.blogspot.com/2012/12/diy-ultrasonic-plastic-welding.html

So, all these technologies could be merged together, why not?

Video of ultrasonic particle levitation:

Video description:

The essence of levitation technology is the countervailing of gravity. It is known that an ultrasound standing wave is capable of suspending small particles at its sound pressure nodes and, so far, this method has been used to levitate lightweight particles, small creatures, and water droplets.
The acoustic axis of the ultrasound beam in these previous studies was parallel to the gravitational force, and the levitated objects were manipulated along the fixed axis (i.e. one-dimensionally) by controlling the phases or frequencies of bolted Langevin-type transducers. In the present study, we considered extended acoustic manipulation whereby millimetre-sized particles were levitated and moved three-dimensionally by localised ultrasonic standing waves, which were generated by ultrasonic phased arrays. Our manipulation system has two original features. One is the direction of the ultrasound beam, which is arbitrary because the force acting toward its centre is also utilised. The other is the manipulation principle by which a localised standing wave is generated at an arbitrary position and moved three-dimensionally by opposed and ultrasonic phased arrays. We experimentally confirmed that various materials could be manipulated by our proposed method.

Josef Prusa also 3d printed a working speaker

Josef Prusa also 3d printed a working speaker. But he didn't publish it. So he is now noted in the history books of 3d printing as second person to successfully develop 3d printed speaker ...
who cares ...
Great work Josef!

First ones recorded were the Cornell guys:

Fully 3d printed speaker from Cornell's Creative Machines Lab

Speaker was fully 3d printed including metal coil at Cornell's Creative Machines Lab by Apoorva, Robert MacCurdy and Hod Lipson. To make it printable, the electronic components are made with two customizable 3D printers: a special silver ink extrusion is used for the coil and a viscous blend of strontium ferrite is used for the magnet.
It's the future people. We just need to get more synergy and merging of 3d printed plastic and 3d printed electronics.
I hope that projects that could empower every maker to print similar speakers like Spoolhead wire embedding 3d printhead RepRap will be revived and improved. http://diy3dprinting.blogspot.com/2013/09/embedding-metal-wire-in-3d-printed.html

DIY 3d printed audiophile sound diffusers

I have a plan to build a music room in a old brick shed in my back yard. I want to have cheap HiFi vinyl listening setup. After a research I learned that sound diffusers are goot thing to have. I went to Thingiverse and found 3d printed sound diffusers by dkubicek.

The idea is good but the time needed to print sufficient are is ridiculous and the costs are just too high for me.
I'll maybe make couple of modules just for decoration and stick with the wooden ones from wood scraps laying around.

From Thingiverse description:

What is a diffusor ?
If you have an room with unpleasing audio properties, one possibly reasons can be echos that occur in a structured way. Early echos (e.g. <0.4 sec) are e.g. well known for inhibiting personal speaking comfort.
Now to get rid of echos, there are two practical ways: sound absorbers and sound diffusors.
The goal of a good diffusor is to scatter sound, so that a specific incoming sound goes to all possible output directions. Hence echos are quite "mute" and do not start at a precise time, but one hears a slow buildup and decrease of echo noise.
Audio absorbers create a harsh empty environment, similar to speaking in open air, while diffusors create a "warm" and sound of a well stocked living room.
Mainly, there exist one and two-dimensional variants, and a you will find heaps of information in the references. And, they are extremely common in recording studios.
Where do you want to put your diffusor ?On the sides and above the "viewing direction" to the sound source. In your rear, sound absorbers are a better choice.
Building a diffusor
Usually, diffusors are made from wood. The material should be reasonably stiff, so sound does not deform it. Ideally, the material should not burn, which sadly, PLA and ABS do. So, please be aware that a room with diffusors is a possible deathtrap.
I figured that these diffusors can be printed easily with 3d printers, although the printsize requires to join many pieces to obtain a large enough area to actually effect the room sound. For a minimal effect, you want a couple of square meter (>25 prints).
Cost Analysis
I found one offer where 6 pieces of 0.6*0.6 mm diffusor cost 370 E. Thats 170 E per square meter.
If you 3d print it with the octagonal structure, you will need 5kg of filament per square meter. Thats in a similar price regime. If you print for material costs. Also, you need to print for 16 days for a square meter on my printer...
The files
All files are created using openscad, the stls are just examples, and its highly recommended that you do not reuse a single part in a panel, but each part should be different. Also, you want to set the wall thickness according to your 3d printers nozzle.
2d rectangular diffusor. It has sideholes, to mount the pieces together. It is suited for 3d printing, but takes quite a while.
Hexagonal diffusor. I figured that instead of a recitlinear grid, the diffusor cells can be aligned in a hexagonal layout. Really neat, no? However, you need to play with your slicing software, so that the outside walls actually print.
Manhatten 1d diffusor, which prints quickest, but only diffuses in one direction. The figer structure might be to small, you might want to increase the cell size to 20mm, for even faster printing.
