SAM Robotic Brick Layer

We have seen extrusion based construction 3D printers that build with cement paste layers. SAM is a robotic bricklayer that uses standard masonry bricks. It can also be considered as a type of 3D printer since it is using additive manufacturing guided by a computer.
Despite some light statements in the video, a construction worker is probably not a job position with bright future.
Sure, SAM needs human assistance now, but it is highly likely it will be fully autonomous in the future. The two workers that assist it now probably displace ten workers because of the efficiency.

Video description:
Meet the Semi-Automated Mason or SAM, a robot that is so good at building walls it could take over the construction industry. Created by New York-based company Construction Robotics, the brick-laying robot promises to both increase productivity while reducing overall labor costs.
While the efficiency on construction sites has been stagnant in the last 20 to 30 years, manufacturing efficiency has increased significantly due to robotics and technology. Construction Robotics created SAM to solve that problem. SAM requires a human partner to smooth over the works, but the heavy lifting is left to the bot.
The robot can lay bricks at least three times faster than humans – and it never gets tired or makes mistakes. VICE News went to a construction site in Virginia to see SAM at work.

Well, they look cool, but are they comfortable? I doubt it. I'm actually pretty certain that they are almost unusable. I like my cheap Chinese faux-leather lazy-boy copy, chewed out by my dogs, where I can chillax with beer and chips in front of the TV.

DIY Glass FDM 3D Printer by Stefanie Pender

Stefanie Pender made a glass FDM machine which extrudes molten glass guided by an industrial robotic arm. Glass is melted by oxygen/propane welding torch.  She achieves simple geometric forms, but she gets A for effort and coolness in my book.

3D Printed Construction Mesh Structures

Here are some examples how 3d meshes can be used to reinforce building structures. This technique is probably much more useful and applicable then cement paste extrusion.

Mesh Mould uses steel wire:

Project description:
The research project Mesh Mould investigates the unification of reinforcement and formwork into a single robotically fabricated material system. During the first research phase a spatial robotic extrusion process was developed, allowing to examine the interdependencies of mesh typology and rheological behavior of concrete (see Mesh Mould 2012 - 2014).
The second research phase at the National Competence Centre in Research (NCCR) Digital Fabrication focuses on the translation of the structurally weak polymer-based extrusion process into a fully load-bearing construction system. The current research focuses on the development of a fully automated bending and welding process for meshes fabricated from 3 mm steel wire.
The research involves the development of a fabrication-, and structurally-informed mesh typology as well as the subsequent collaborative development of a specialized robotic end-effector together with the Agile & Dexterous Robotics Lab of Professor Jonas Buchli.

digiFABTuring and their robot arm attached plastic extruder which is more similar to common 3d printheads and could be done in a home workshop:

Here is a complete wall system with 3d printed polymer matrix made by Branch Technology:

They 3D printed a 7-foot-tall-by-3-foot-wide wall in 30 hours, and are currently extruding at a rate of 1.5 pounds per hour. The wall has a spray foam insulation, concrete core and inside/outside finish layer.

How do robots make robotic babies?

Stork? No. WiFi and 3D printing. Obviously.

A team of scientists at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam demonstrated how robots can evolve and reproduce. The first robot baby is a big step towards robotic ecosystems that can evolve in challenging environments. Two parent robots meet and exchange robotic DNA over WiFi which makes the baby in a 3d printer.

Hadrian X Robotic Truck That 3D Prints Buildings With Bricks

Australian company "Fastbrick Robotics" developed a robotic truck system that can lay 225 bricks per hour. It's a big 3d printer on wheels that uses robotic crane to build houses.
It is not cement paste extrusion that can be found in other building 3d printers, but it is additive, digital and making BIG 3d objects.
Personally, I'm not even sure that cement paste extrusion is the best way to get commercially viable construction machine for industry wide adoption and application as a standard house building tool.

People like brick.

Here is an interesting video presentation:

It still needs some human assistance, so some jobs in construction field will be saved. Some. Few. For some time.

Single Actuator Wave-like 3D Printed Robot

SAW is a 3d printed robot that can crawl, swim and climb using wave motions with only one motor. And it looks creepy.

From project description:
SAW (single actuator wave-like robot) is the first robot that produces a pure wave-like motion with a single motor. The robot was developed for medical, industrial and search and rescue purposes. The design is simple, 3D printed and the passive wheels are for steering only. In the movie we show that the robot can crawl over different surfaces, climb and swim. It reached a maximum speed of 57 cm/s which is 5 times faster than any other similar robot.
The robot's design is simply and highly reliable very little maintenance was needed.
The robot's motion is similar to the "do the worm" dance.
The robot was developed at the Bioinspired and medical Robotics lab at BGU by David Zarrouk, Moshe Mann, Nir Dgani, Ilanit Waxman, Tal Yehuda, Nissan Jerbi and Amotz Hess.

Tend.ai Robotic Servant for your 3D Printer Farm

Tend.ai developed cloud robotics solution that enables a robotic arm to operate your 3d printer farm. You do not need to know how to program the robot since it uses a webcam and machine learning to figure out triggers and actions it needs to do. You basically show it what to do.
Since it can work non-stop, you can have a small manufacturing robotic cell in your workshop or home. it goes without saying it can operate other machines as well, such as CNCs or laser cutters.

One thing comes to mind: since you can get orders from the web, use a robot to operate your 3d printer, and package the objects, you will just probably need to send them via delivery service. That can probably also be automated... You see where I'm going ...

Stone And Rope 3D Printing with Rock Print

Rock Print is a robotic 3d printer that lays textile ropes on bed of stones conceting them and makong an architectural shape.

Rock Print in action:

Project description:
Rock Print is the first architectural installation to be built from low-grade granular material and constructed by robotic machines. Conceived as an intriguing vertical object, the installation presents a radically new approach to The State of the Art of Architecture – the official title of the inaugural Chicago Architecture Biennial 2015 – and brings forward a new category of random packed, potentially fully reusable, poly-dispersed jammed structures that can be automatically fabricated in non-standard shapes. Following an initial period of robotic assembly, the installation will comprise a large-scale architectural artefact in its completed form, exhibiting distinct features, such as, for example, full material reversibility and the respective reusability of the aggregated materials; structurally active interlocking, differentiated structural performance, while yielding high geometric flexibility and articulation. Performing a full scale 3D “rock printing process” that uses the self-aggregating capacities of the material itself, this visionary project is the first collaborative installation by Gramazio Kohler Research, ETH Zurich, and the Self-Assembly Lab, MIT. The Chicago Architecture Biennial will open on 3rd October 2015 and will close on 3rd January 2016. For more information: www.chicagoarchitecturebiennial.org

Incremental sheet forming digital fabrication robot

Could this be considered as 3d printing? Probably not as no material is added. Still, it is interesting digital fabrication method. I wonder is it using factory software or some sort of custom hacked KUKA robotic arm code.

OpenHand 3d printable open source robotic hand is a strong and flexible gripper for you robot

3d printed robots are not toys anymore and very serious open source projects are emerging like strong DIY 3d printable robotic arm or small DIY robotic production cell.

We could see very soon home based robotic mini factories where robots, cnc machines, pick-and-place machines and 3d printers make anything you can imagine.

If you want to develop your own project you can use this robotic hand developed at Yale.

It comes in several configurations with different number of fingers. Finger grippers are made from different combinations of flexible and hard materials moved by fiber tendons. The resulting movements show that it can manipulate many different types of objects.
OpenHand is an open source projects so all the files are available publicly even including a code to modify the design.

KUKA robotic arm turned into six axis 3d printer produces self supporting floating structures

While six axis 3d printer is nothing new, they are quit rare. There have been even robotic arms hacked to print in all axis even with metal like MX3D Metal. Still I find this robot to be more aesthetic and organic in operation.
This machine prints self supporting floating structures inspired by spider webs in same ABS like most common DIY 3d printers and it is even Arduino controlled. It is based on KUKA industrial robotic arm and it is developed inside "Digital Future" project.

The project, Robotic 6-Axis 3D Printing, is a highly-integrated installation combining robotic system, 3D printing technique and interactive interface. It aims to provide the designer a digital method to eliminate the line between "Designing" and "Fabricating". In this case, architects provides more than just drawings and construction notes, however, they are capable of fabricating their work quickly and precisely by themselves
Most of today's researches and applications of robotic fabrication are limited to replicating human labor and raising efficiency of manufacturing. However, in the project of Robotic 6-Axis 3D Printing, we developed a fabrication strategy learning and emulating the law of nature (referring to Chinese philosophy "师法自然 ").
By studying the material and structure performance of 3D form in nature, we figured out a way to incorporate biomimetic fabrication strategy into 3D printing process. And by designing the special robotic-end effector (Tooling) and utilizing the great flexibility and accuracy of KUKA robot system, the biomimetic fabricating process has been fully realized.
The whole process embodied the concept of "Digital Craftsmanship", which emphasis the personality of designer and allows them to closely integrated "Designing" and "Fabricating".
Here is video of the robotic craftsman in action:
