How to build an Ultimaker2Go low cost clone

PaulSS made a build log on Instructables about his Ultimaker2 Go DIY clone. It is much cheaper then the 1600 USD original at some 500 - 600 USD. The frame is made on a CNC from plywood.
The machine is named Ultifaker2Go :-)

Ultimaker 2+ and Ultimaker 2 Extended+ Released

Ultimaker released new and upgraded Ultimaker 2+ and Ultimaker 2 Extended+. There are several upgrades but nothing major changed in the technology.

Main upgrades are:
  • Geared feeder mechanism
  • Easy-swap nozzles with 0,25, 0,4, 0,6 and 0,8mm nozzles 
  • Optimized air flow with new fancaps

Both models have the same prices as the previous models, with the Ultimaker2+ (build volume: 223 x 223 x 205 mm) priced at  € 1.895,00 excl. VAT and the Ultimaker 2 Extended+ (build volume: 223 x 223 x 305mm) priced at € 2.495,00 excl. VAT.

Ultimaker Now Has a Mobile App

Ultimaker is joining a rank of major companies who have a mobile app for their 3d printer. It comes in iOS and Android variants but only supports basic setup, operations manual and help functions. There is no remote monitoring or control options but I have a feeling they will come in the future versions.

Make your own aluminum frame Ultimaker 2 clone

Jason developed Ultimaker 2 clone made with aluminum extrusion frame and 3d printed parts. According to his posts it work very well.

He describes it as:
This is not The Greatest UM2 Clone, no.
This is just a tribute.
This project began as a fun way to learn AutoDesk Fusion 360. I started by importing the entire Solidworks CAD file into a new Fusion 360 project, dropped the frame (walls) from the printer, built 20x20 Misumi aluminum extrusions to wrap the printer guts and then worked to build brackets to support all the parts that previously attached to the frame.
I've been printing nonstop on this new printer with the same precision and quality as my real UM2. In fact, I can use the same GCODE in either machine with identical results.

New Ultimaker 2 family members: Ultimaker 2 Go and Ultimaker 2 Extended

Ultimaker just released their two new 3d printers: Ultimaker 2 Go and Ultimaker 2 Extended: Go is smaller, portable and with non-heated printebed while Extended is 10 cm (4 inches) taller and gives you bigger printvolume.

The Ultimaker2 Extended is priced at $3030, some $500 more than the original, while the Ultimaker2 Go, is priced at $1450 Both will be available for pre-order in April 2015.

On a personal note, I'm little disappointed I expected more from Ultimaker then just different sizes. I thought that's what MakerBot does... I know that they are in direct competition and that there is probably market demand --- but still ... more innovation would be good ...

Cura 14.03 with new Ultimaker 2 firmware released!

Ultimaker software just released Cura 14.03. Here is overview from Ultimaker blog:
Setting storage
One of the major changes is that the settings are now stored per machine instead of global for all machines. This means that if you have multiple printers you can keep the optimal settings for each printer with that printer.
TweakAtZ plugin
The “TweakAtZ” plugin has been added by default. This plugin has been made by Steve Morlock, Ricardo Gomez and Stefan Heule. Big thank you to them! Thanks to their community effort you can now change various settings like temperature and speed at certain heights. Giving more control on how your print is made.
New Ultimaker 2 firmware
For the Ultimaker2 a new firmware is supplied with Cura 14.03. This firmware adds a pause option in the tune menu. So you can pause a print on the Ultimaker2. It also contains fixes for a few small bugs that where reported.
Additional changes in Cura
  • Improved the LayerView rendering speed
  • LayerView now updates during slicing, so you can see the result before it is ready to print spotting problems early on
  • Selectable USB printing dialogs, from plugins, with default Basic and PronterfaceUI
  • Selection between new grid or line based support material
  • Added optional separate speeds for outer and inner shells
  • Added Z-Hop feature in the expert settings
  • Added setting to configure support material angle from the expert settings, giving better control on where support material is generated
  • Various small bugfixes improving print quality
Full features Ultimaker 2 firmware update
  • Added pause function during printing
  • Added material selection when changing material
  • Fixed the move material maintenance function
  • Fixed the led brightness on startup
  • Retraction settings are saved and restored on reset

Ultimaker 2 detailed review by Barnacules




Another great review by Barnacules of Ultimaker 2. He goes trough unboxing, setup, calibration, leveling and first printing. His machine came delivered with on extruder fan broken. The leveling process seems easy with adjustment screws on the bottom of the print bed.

Yes, there is a new Ultimaker 2 out. I was on a vacation so I completely missed it. Cool and powerfull machine. In the expensive zone, but probably worth it. It remains open source. Hopefully there will be some independent testing soon.

It’s a quiet machine and fits in almost any environment. By making use of different materials for the frame we created a printer with the exact measurements on the outside as the Ultimaker Original, but with a larger build volume. We went from X20,5 * Y20,5 *Z20,5 cm to X25,5 * Y25,5 * Z20,5 cm, so there is more space available in depth and width.
A heated bed in combination with printing on glass ensures that the material can be easily controlled. It also makes it possible to print with a wide variety of materials. When the glass is coated with a gluestick the material will have a better grip during printing. It will also make it easier to remove your print when finished as the heated bed cools.
Under the right temperature warping of your printed objects is ruled out for both PLA and ABS.
Apart from the Bowden tube we improved the entire extrusion system. Starting with the filament supply, the direct drive gives superb control so both supply as retraction will respond immediately. We’ve managed to get an even better print-to-size ratio.
The hot end is completely redesigned making it even more reliable. By using a cover and cooling several parts, the temperature of the hot end is more predictable and less sensitive to external elements. Our hot end is also all lot safer because it’s almost fully made of metal so you’ll never get a melted peek. The improved electronics take care of reliable control and monitoring of all of the electronic components in the printer.
