Formlabs Fuse 1 Desktop SLS 3D Printer

Formlabs just released their Fuse 1 3D printer which is a desktop selective laser sintering machine priced at 9,999 USD. It has a 165 x 165 x 320 mm build volume and uses nylon powder.

This is a small revolution on the market and a big step forward in 3D printing availability and affordability!!! Laser sintering machines used to cost in hundreds of thousands and were very large. This will push the competition to respond and lower the prices even more in the future.

I wonder what will the price of the powder material be? Will it be recyclable and reusable? Will it come in proprietary cartridges with chip control unit?

Update:

Here is a much more detailed review by Tested. It shows how the Fuse 1 works and accompanying equipment like recovery station and material mixer. The material is recyclable and the mix of new and used material is determined by the user to get different print qualities.
The material is gray to absorb more energy from 10 watts fiber laser.


Bumpy is cool looking minimalist DIY MP3 player

Bumpy is a minimalist DIY MP3 player with 3d printable case developed by Matt Keeter. It plays MP3s from SD card and it's open sourced. I've been thinking about getting rid of my smartphone, buying a dumb-phone and using stand-alone MP3 player and this looks very interesting.































The case is printed on Formlabs machines, but you could also probably do it on other 3d printers:

Hacked Formlabs 3D Printer Plays a Game of Spacewar

3D printers are becoming so ubiquitous that even the higher-end machines like Form 1 and Form 2 are being used to make gaming projects like this Spacewar setup.

Matt Keeter used electronics and lasers from Form 2 and cover from Form 1, programmed it in Haskell and made a classic video game playable on a hardware of gutted SLA 3d printer.

Form 2 is a New FormLabs Flagship SLA

Formlabs just released Form 2, the new desktop SLA machine. It is a 40% larger 3d printer than its predecessor. You can find all the specs on their page, it wil be priced at 3499 USD range.

Great step forward!

Only thing that drew my attention is their new "Automated Resin Systems". It looks like proprietary cartridge and it has an ID chip. I'm not a big fan of that setup but they claim you will be still able to use and experiment with third party resins in "Open Mode". We will see how this situation develops. If they close their machine so it can only use Fromlabs resin, someone will probably hack it making chip protection obsolete.


There are still no third party reviews or tests.

Tough Resin from FormLabs

New advances in resin materials with FormLabs Tough resin. SLA is surely being area of slow but steady developments and could take over FDM one day in desktop machines.

Suitable for:
  • High-impact/high-stress components
  • Snap-fit functions and living hinges
  • Machining
  • Cyclic loading
Not suitable for:
  • Very fine features or thin walls
  • Rigid or stiff prints
  • High-temperature applications
  • Constant loading

Loafinator simple DIY vibration cleaning bath for your resin 3d printed objects

Christopher Barr wanted to make a 20 minute post SLA printing cleaning process of isopropyl alcohol (IPA) bath shorter so he made this simple DIY vibration cleaning bath that decreases the time by tenfold and makes it into two minute process.

In the core of the machine that produces vibrations is a common hand sander (in this case Makita) that is fixated by putting it in expanding urethane foam mold. The base and the top container are made from two simple loaf pans (hence: the Loafinator).

FormLabs wants to rule in 2015 and they demonstrate it with a fully resin 3d printed speaker project

FormLabs has some resolutions for 2015 and they have made a fully 3d printable speaker project made from resins with different properties. Key resin property for the speaker is flexibility. Improved resolution and optimized support systems help also.

DIY 3d printed resin lens made on Form 1+


3d printing optical lenses is usually in domain of high tech companies, but Craig Broady developed and tested a method that enables you to print functional lenses on Form 1 + with clear resin. 

The process is well documented in a form of a guide on Formlabs forums and it involves a post-processing by polishing the surface with sand paper and scratch removal fluid.
The lens is 1.75mm at its thinnest and 4.32mm at its thickest, printed with a 50 micron layer thickness.

Hyperform will help you create big objects in small printvolumes with folding chains

Hyperform is design technology concept where you can print big structures in small 3d printer print volumes by transforming them into shapes that can be made with folding and interlocking chains. You'll get it when you watch the video.

As far as I can see there is no software released, or any real-life application but the technology will probably find its way to the market and users in some form.




As 3D printers become affordable and ubiquitous, they are also becoming smaller, placing severe constraints on the scale of objects we can create. Hyperform is an investigation into folding as a computational design strategy for compressing large scale objects into the small volume of desktop 3D printers.

Formlabs Form 1+ is new flagship SLA 3d printer (update: now with test and review)





Fromlabs released their new Form 1+ upgraded printer. It still has the same print volume as the previous version but performance is significantly improved.

The upgraded Form 1+ features:
  • A higher-power second-generation laser system for faster print speeds
  • A redesigned galvanometer control system for more precise and accurate control
  • Re-engineered mechanical components for better wear and durability
  • A light-blocking injection-molded resin tank for better print consistency – allowing you to store your tanks outside the Form 1. The tank also comes with a stackable lid, helping you manage multiple resins more easily.

Formlabs also has new black resin, because, ya know, black is a cool color. It will be priced at $149/liter. It is specially tuned Black to be ideal for models with delicate features and fine details. It may print up to 30% more slowly than other Formlabs resins at the 100 micron setting with the increased cure-time, but the results should be BLACK.





















Formlabs has also partnered with UK-based Express Group, a company that will help sell and service the Form 1+ printer in Europe. The printer will be priced at €2,799 in Europe or at $3,299 for USA market.

This major update includes hundreds of fixes and features, along with a slick interface overhaul. We've made substantial improvements in how your model’s supports are generated and printed.
Altogether, we’re incredibly proud of PreForm’s latest incarnation. There are some real stand-out features.
To make removing a freshly-printed model from the build platform easier, PreForm’s support generation algorithm now includes handy quick release tabs — small notches on the side of your model’s base that help it lift easily off the build platform. Wedging a narrow tool into the notch will give you some leverage to pop the model right off.

More File Types

PreForm 1.0 supports .OBJ files. For those of you working in SketchUp (along with a number of other CAD programs), you can now export your models directly into PreForm, without having to generate an .STL.
