Printrbot Printrbelt

Printrbot just teased their Printrbelt 3D printer with the heated conveyor belt print surface or "Infinite Z" as they described it.  The belt is a steel belt covered in Kapton with adjustable bed height and tension.
It is a direct competitor to BlackBelt 3D printer (which has a bigger print surface) and knowing Printrbot, it should be low cost and open source.

Brook responded in a Tweet:
Yes, Printrbelt will be open source & affordable. I'll do larger sizes. Already have bits designed for 12"x12" window, but this first.
So we can expect larger models in the future.

Brook writes:
The Printrbot Printrbelt allows for very long prints, multiple copies of one print, or a whole project of files to be printed in one shot. It is a beta, but too fun to keep to ourselves.
We are working with Polar3D, who has already hacked a printer like this onto an existing printer frame. They are working on the firmware magic in a cloud service to make this mind-bending twist on 3d printing easy for anyone. This will be a neat partnership that takes an important step forward in desktop manufacturing.
Stay tuned for more on this wild 3d printer that brings a new superpower to your desktop at an affordable price.

Printrbot just introduced the Printrbot Smalls! It is a new low cost entry level 3d printer from a well known company. It is priced at $298!

Okay, so how does it print?  Since this is a kit, the results are largely up to you, but make no mistake.  In the hands of an experienced user (like the ones we have here at PBHQ), the Smalls can produce results comparable to the Play, Simple, or Plus.
This absolutely is the lowest priced 3D printer we’ve ever released!  (except for one other laser cut wood kit with fishing line instead of belts and sandpaper pulleys instead of real pulleys that was only available for a limited time until we corrected both price and some design problems …but let’s just keep that between us).   It is definitely the least expensive printer that we will EVER, EVER release  …that we know of. …for now.
We are pretty sure it is the most affordable American-Made 3D printer.   Definitely the most economical Northern-California-Made 3D printer.  Totally the most budget-friendly 3D printer manufactured in Lincoln, CA.  Not “cheap”, just inexpensive.

We are still waiting for third party reviews and tests but Printrbot has a proven track record of making solid designs.

Printrbot Crawlbot CNC Set-Up and Operation

Affordable CNC routers and laser cutters are probably the next big thing in home digital manufacturing and Printrbot is strongly entering into that field.

Here is the presentation of their Crawlbot large area CNC router that can cut standard 4x8 or even larger sheets. It moves along the surface on a sort of wheels and doesn't have a full rigid metal frame in all axis. It looks like it is optimized for low cost and simpler operations on large surface like cutting OpenDesk furniture modules. Z-axis height is very limited, but this is the price you pay.

It is priced at 3499 USD.

I have wrestled with this monster for over a year. I build 5 prototypes from scratch and hated them all. The last one was too ambitious with servos and ballscrews... That last one printed beautifully after, oh, SO much work, but I tore it down the next day and went back to the drawing board... Hacking together a totally new design in a couple days from spare parts lying around-- #6. That served as the model for this fine specimen - #7. Thanks again to Steve, Nick, Mark and Caleb.
The Printrbot Pro is aimed at those who want a very large build volume but don't want to pay the big bucks for other options out there.

It's also the most expensive printer we have ever made, but will be less than the MB Z18. But, not gonna kid ya, shipping will kill you.
We will post pics, video and details immediately. We won't have it at Makerfaire, though. After reviewing it today, I have some details to refine after we get back... Then it's ready for prime time.

We will sell this bot a bit differently... Doing a waiting list and making them one at a time. I may actually interview the potential buyers to be sure of a good fit. We hope to keep a slow steady pace with this one since the market is presumably small. I have a handful of clients already lining up... Really interesting to hear what people plan to do with them! It is intended for businesses and education.
The shop is a buzz about what we all want to print on this thing. The next one we build is for me ;)
Printrbot Crawlbot CNC

Printrbot Crawlbot lives. It’s big and it’s small. A Cnc router that cuts 4x8′ material, yet occupies a small footprint in your garage. CAD/CAM software included.

It's still early, but the world will see it in a couple of days anyway. Even though there is a punch list of things to refine, I wanted to share it on the first day I saw it cut with its own software.
That's right, Printrbot makes software, thanks to Mick and Sean - the two newest members of the Printrbot family. Mick is the coder / maker in the pic.

Crawlbot will feature cloud-powered project sharing-- software that runs in your browser but works offline too. Tinyg and raspberry pi team up to run the show here. Mick been working on the software for months. The hardware idea was the usual Brook and Brian brainstorm followed by boots on the ground making it a reality. Thanks to Steve (lead), Mark, Nick, & Caleb.

Designed completely in Fusion 360, btw.

Printrbot just announced their new Printrbot Play 3D printer which is aiming towards low cost market but has full metal body and aluminum platform.

Printrbot Paste Extruder

Brook Drumm of Printrbot posted on his G+ about Printrbot Paste Extruder.
He announced some possible interesting future implementations of this type of extruder:
  • Heated syringe (chocolate and human cells??)
  • Printable files to convert to dual chamber syringe with quick drying silicone and a mixer nozzle (off the shelf stuff)
  • quick setting UV resin paste with light on the end of the tip 
  • conversion to a Bowden type setup so the extruder can sit on the table getting all that mass off the printer
  • a sister extruder that will push moist clay through a bigger hose for big clay prints ready to fire
  • large pneumatically assisted reservoir for longer/bigger prints feeding a screw drive print head
  • new material mixes for sturdier paste and firmer clay to support the weight of the print (cellulose, etc)
  • metal construction to get rid of laser cut wood 
  • dabble in concrete then scale it up
  • -ugar paste for edible goodies
  • shortbread cookie recipes for cookie paste

How to upgrade early Printrbot Simple from fishing line to belt drive

If you own an early version of wooden Printrbot Simple from 2013 / 2014 that is powered by Kevlar fishing line you may want to upgrade it to belt drive.

Steampunk style DIY 3d printer based on Printrbot GO

John Davis made this beautiful steampunk themed 3d printer based on Printrbot Go. I'm a huge fan of wood frame 3d printers and this is work of a true craftsman.
It has some nice finishing touches like brass and bronze inlays, mechanical switches, functional gauges and suitcase form factor.

Printrbot Metal Plus 3d printer - now with reviews!

Printerbot has a new flagship 3d printer: The Printrbot Metal Plus. It was released just in time for USA holiday season shopping (Off topic: USA shopping habits and Black Friday look very VERY strange to us European folk - not judging - just sayin').

It looks like very solid machine, but we are used nothing less from Printrbot. Future tests and reviews will surely show that it is a design with high performance.

The Printrbot Plus is constructed of powder coated metal and machined aluminum with open platform for fabricating parts up to 10 x 10 x 10 inches using 1.75mm PLA filament.
The printer head moves on the X (left to right) and Z (up and down) axes, while the print bed moves on the Y (backward and forward) axis. The Mic 6 aluminum bed is extremely flat and works with an Auto-Leveling Probe with the user-chosen software to calibrate the height of the print head. The new 1.75mm Metal Ubis Hot End has a maximum resolution of 100 microns and includes a fan to help solidify the molten filament as it is extruded onto the print bed.
The printer uses open source software and connects to the computer using the included mini-USB cable. Using a micro-SD card (sold separately), the printer can be disconnected from the computer for untethered printing during long print jobs.
Linear rails and carts for stability and smooth movement of the print head and bed. The GT2 belt and aluminum pulley system facilitates precise movement of the print head and bed. The NEMA 17 stepper motors meet the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) standard ICS 16-2001.

Printrbot shows their first desktop CNC router! Update: CNC Beta 01 presented





This is a big surprise and big news for the scene! Printrbot is expanding into desktop CNC market with this preview of their router. We want more information!
Developing machine like this is logical step since there are many similarities with their core 3d printer products.

Printrbot Founder and CEO Brook Drumm was on hand at MakerCon today to reveal a beta of the upcoming Printrbot CNC router. While it's targeted as a tool for beginner CNC'ers, the machine is quite capable for maker-pros alike. It can cut wood, plastic and aluminum at "respectable speeds," according to Brook.

Update:

Brook just presented their CNC machine that will be able to cut metal. The name of limited production machine is CNC Beta 01 which will be produced in 20 units series only and will be priced at 1499 USD. It has an unique z xis movement where the entire gantry changes the high.




I think we will see more and more DIY CNC machines as digital fabrication and home manufacturing grows further ....

The Printrbot Go is a peculiar beast. It's not everyone's cup of tea. It doesn't try to be the printer for the masses (that's the Simple!). It's large, funky, portable, and expensive, for Printrbot, but it does pack a punch.

Printrbot introduces new full metal Simple 3d printer

Printrbot is well known for its low cost plywood printers. Over at Makezine there is a news that they are releasing the first full metal body machine, the metal Simple. It has larger print volume of  6″x 6″x 6″, Z-axis end-stop adjustment knob and a self-leveling bed. It looks good, and should be very sturdy.
