Use CNC Wood Router For Mold Production


Dianel Dean and Ryan use cnc wood router to produce a mold for their project " Underground Sound".  Their project is with some giant flowers, which allow people to hear the sound from earth via megaphones.

The mold for the megaphone was designed in Rhino and imported into Enroute software as an .STL. They created all the toolpathing in EnRoute. The form was cut in pieces on the 
CNC router mold using a 1/2" wide by 3.5" tall ball nose bit.  Daniel glued together panel board to be 3.5" deep and divided the megaphone up into various sections. Once cut, the sections were glued together to create the final form, which was then used as a mold for the fiberglass.

Learning how to hand engrave with a router can be very rewarding. Freehand engraving yields results that last forever. All you need is a small hand router. Draw your pattern on a piece of wood and establish your lines. Follow them with a router and a small engraving bit. Because you don't use guides to follow your patterns, it gives your engravings a custom, hand carved look. It's easy, fun and it's even safer than engraving with a knife. A popular grape-leaf pattern is traditional and easy to find, and is a good place to start.
Things You'll Need
Small hand router, 1/4-inch capacity
Router bit, 1/4-inch flute
2 wrenches that came with router
Pencil
Pattern
Pine, 6-by-24-by-3/4-inch
Grape leaf pattern
Scissors
2 hand clamps, 12-inch
1Download a grape leaf pattern of your choice and print it out. Cut out the pattern with scissors.
2Trace the pattern onto the pine. Clamp the pine to the edge of a worktable.

3Insert the flute bit into the router and tighten the retaining nut using the wrenches. Loosen the depth of cut adjustment on the side of the router and slide the router base so that 1/4 inch of the bit extends out the bottom of the router base. Tighten the depth of cut knob.
4Plug in the router. Hold the router base in both hands, position it over the pine. Reach up with your thumb and turn the cnc wood router on.
5Position the tip of the bit over the pencil lines and lower the bit into the wood. Let the sides of your palms on both hands rest on the wood as you hold the router between your hands.
6Begin following the lines, like you would with a large pen sliding the router along slowly as you trace over the pencil lines, letting the bit cut the design with the tip of the bit. Trace the entire design.
Tips & Warnings
Test the depth of your cut on a piece of scrap wood, or the back of your piece of pine before starting to engrave. When finished engraving, use a small piece of folded sandpaper to remove any feathered edges of the engraving lines.
Always wear safety glasses when working with wood. Make sure your router is turned off when you plug it in.

Are you a PCB workshop owner? How you fix PCB on CNC router working table? By twin adhensive? by clamp? After using adhensive, it is rather not eady to remove the adhensive, right? Well, if you use clamp, and 
when the PCB size is not small, then the middle section of PCB may can not fixed tightly, and cause lower resolution?
Today, OMNI suggest a good solution for PCB processing.  We use No.67 spray adhensive with 3M brand.
1. Clean the dust from PCB back and working table. Then spray out the No.67 adhensive to PCB back and leave the PCB for several min. 
2. Ensure working table is even, put PCB on table, start engraving and drilling.
3. NO.67 adhensive can be used repeatly for several days. So for next PCB, then still use it. If the back of PCB is with a little adhensive after processed by router cnc, then use 3M orange detergent to clean it.

 For cheaper acrylic, we try different feeding speed, different spindle rolling speed on cheap acrylic drilling, the drilling result is ok, but the acrylic powder easily sticks cutter and melted, then causing cnc wood routercutter broken.


 For expensive acrylic, 8000 rpm is no problem for it, the acrylic hole edge is smooth, and the powder is not easy to stick cutter. It is also faster for powder removing, 
drilling hole resolution is higher, and no acrylic melt appearance.
The cheaper 2.0 single edge milling cutter, powder removing capability is just ok. But the edge of work have to be improved.
 High quality single edge 2.0 milling cutter, the cutting edge is smooth, no need for re-work again, like made by mould.

bigger than 800w. Orelse, it will speed up bearing wear, lost resolution if using smaller power spindle work for heavy duty job. Generally, if you only engrave double color board, suggest using working size less than 
600mm, if you also cut big board, then choose the right size cnc router. If you works on cylindrical material or other unusual shape, then, you may need to mount on some frock clamp or rotary attachment. And this 
requires longer z axis travelling size. 

3. Try making sample before placing order
