Peachy Printer Drama

Well, if you funded Peachy Printer Kickstarter, you may have funded someones house. Looks like most of funds were taken and misappropriated by one of the partners.

Here is the video describing the situation.

Crowdfunding and Kickstartering 3d printing campaigns will take a huge blow after this. Trust of community and backers towards any project will be hard to develop.

Looks like police has been involved, maybe we will see some solution of this in the future.

Here is Richard's take on the entire scandal:

He opens many new questions ...

Angus and his take on this situation:

Angus is right in his opinion that Kickstarter as a platform always get their cut but never take any responsibility for the aftermath of a campaign.

Thingiverse Theft And How To Protect Yourself

Someone has been stealing designs from Thingiverse and selling it on Ebay. Here are two videos describing the situation and how you can protect yourself.

Here is Joel aka. 3D Printing Nerd:

Here is Angus from Maker's Muse. He as a industrial designer and professional with a lot of experience suggest few steps on how to protect yourself including watermarking it and not uploading it at all:

Here is the Thingiverse post that started it all:

http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1350837

here is the official Thingiverse statement about your rights:

http://www.makerbot.com/blog/2016/02/24/your-rights-when-you-upload-to-thingiverse

Here is the epilogue of the whole story, but it will probably happen again in a different form:

The Kiosk by Bruce Sterling is dark vision of future and 3d printing

"The Kiosk" is an EXCELLENT must-read (or listen) science fiction novella by Bruce Sterling which deals with the dystopian future and 3d printing.
Bruce Sterling is a master SF writer famous for his work in fiction and technology theory and he currently lives in Serbia which is in my neighborhood and was once part of Yugoslavia.

The novella is clearly influenced by culture and history of Ex-Yugoslavia which makes it even more appealing to me.
It deals with life of kiosk owner Borislav from East Euroslavia who gets a "Fabrikator" machine. I will not spoil your enjoyment of the audiobook but it gets dark, violent, interesting ... there are 3d printed bullets printed with carbon particles and other 3d printed appliances ... the whole society of main protagonist is shaped by 3d printing...

You can download it here for free, it is read by Peter Cavell and starts around 10:30 into the podcast:

http://www.starshipsofa.com/blog/2010/01/13/aural-delights-no-116-bruce-sterling/

It is hour and a half well spent, I listened to it while walking my dog ...

FYI: it is not an optimistic work ...

For a similary themed dystopian short story you can also check out Printcrime by Cory Doctorow:

http://craphound.com/?p=573

"The Kiosk" inspired a project:

‘KIOSK’ explores a near future scenario in which digital fabrication is so ubiquitous that we see it appear on our
street corners. With KIOSK the user can ‘appropriate, sample, remix, improve, up/downscale or copy new objects
and 3D-print them on the spot.’ KIOSK operates as a portable 3D copyshop capable of producing a ‘custom made
fix for your broken shoe, materialise an illegal download of Starck’s Juicy Salif orange squeezer that you modified for better performance or quickly print out a present for your sister’s birthday.’ For The Machine Unfold, in collaboration with Indianen, created a new creative digital copy station.

A project commissioned by Z33, House for contemporary art and MU Eindhoven.
With the support of Bits from Bytes and Jo Van Bostraeten.
A collaboration with Indianen.

Chocolate 3D printer by Print Arsenal (Update: looks like it is a scam)

UPDATE (21.1.2015):

Looks like the whole campaign is a scam and the printer does not exist:

http://www.3ders.org/articles/20150121-crowdfunding-campaign-for-the-print-arsenal-3d-chocolate-printer-turns-out-to-be-fraudulent.html

OLD POST:

New day new 3d printer. This machine developed by Print Arsenal also extrudes chocolate. It is maybe somewhat pricey, but you decide ...

How to make 3d printed replacment car key

Smith | Allen is a design company located in Oakland California and they posted a step-by-step guide on how to make a replacement or copy of a car key.

They took a photo of a broken car key, processed it in Fusion 360 and 3d printed in on Object Connex 500. You could use software you are used to or use Shapeways for printing the key. Simple FDM home printers were not used in the process so I'm not sure how the end result would be.

Do keep in mind that some keys have security codes so maybe you will not be able to start your car or you will trigger some sort of security protocol.

You can see a full tutorial here:

http://www.instructables.com/id/Copy-a-Car-Key-with-a-3D-Printer/?ALLSTEPS

If you want to do this yourself, you will have to watch out for the thickness and strength of your 3d printed car key and that you don't brake it inside your ignition lock.

And now stories will be posted by fearmongers on vehicle security and potential for crime and how you should always keep your car key out of sight so that they can not be copied by taking a photo of them ...

3d printed survival kit for protesters

Richard Clarkson designed this "survival" kit that should, in theory, help you go trough demonstration or civic unrest. It is probably more of artistic / design type of a project, with probably limited real world application.

The kit contains:  a respirator, a lemon juice dispenser for neutralizing pepper spray, a false mustache, a mask, a set of pens and paper and a Duct Tape dispenser.
I couldn't find published STL files.

Now, it could be just an art project, but I watched TV report on Brasilian demonstrations against world soccer cup. When the police shoots tear gas, people ran and go to buy similar homemade antacid spray dispensers to neutralize the tear gas from small street vendors.+ who fallow the demonstration with their sales carts.

Will 3d printing remain legal? The future of 3d printing legality discussion at Stanford may provide some answers and guidelines

One thing is sure: there will be much more litigation in the future ...

From the video description:
Three dimensional printing turns bits into atoms. The technology is simply amazing. These machines draw on programming, art and engineering to enable people to design and build intricate, beautiful, functional jewelry, machine parts, toys and even shoes. In the commercial sector, 3D printing can revolutionize supply chains as well. As the public interest group Public Knowledge wrote once, "It will be awesome if they don't screw it up."
The age of publicly accessible 3D printers and printing services is finally here, but are our legal doctrines up to the task of protecting the public while not screwing up a fantastic new tool? Stanford Law Professors Mark Lemley and Nora Freeman Engstrom, the CEO of Shapeways, the founder of Printrbot, the president of Airwolf 3D, and CIS Director of Civil Liberties Jennifer Granick discuss the product liablity and intellectual property issues surrounding this innovation.
Panelists:
  • Mark Lemley - William H. Neukom Professor of Law at Stanford Law School
  • Nora Freeman Engstrom - Associate Professor of Law at Stanford Law School
  • Peter Weijmarshausen - CEO of Shapeways, 3D printing marketplace and community
  • Brook Drumm - Founder of Printrbot, a desktop 3D printer you can build in a couple hours
  • Erick Wolf - Intellectual Property Attorney and President of Airwolf 3D, an affordable, durable, and easy-to-use 3D printer

3d printed guns, keys, drones in MIA video (provocation for the sake of it)

This music video by MIA was probably made to be "provocative", and it has all the "bad things to make with 3d printer" cliches like 3d printed guns and key copies.
MIA is commercial artist with "bad girl" and this type of presentation is to be expected. I can already hear some politicians and moralists screaming "3d printing is a danger". No it's not. I don't even think MIAs fan base is even much interested in 3d printing.

On other hand, it would be much more interesting to see young people in poorer countries working this technology. I know some semi-literate young guys living in small rural communities in Croatia who are unemployed or working as field day-laborers building their 3d printers and using bitcoin. THAT is an interesting story.

We need less fear mongering and more knowledge ...

They don't even use real 3d printed models in the videos but plastic toy guns

3D printed knives projects

This post will compile news and data about 3d printed knives and blades.

This was the first video of 3d printed knife I saw:

I don't see it is good for anything except cake cutting.

Update (28.2.2014):

here is another 3d printed tanto style blade in ABS by Barancules. You can open cardboard boxes with it ... still, far away from usable knife IMHO

Here is  karambit style blade:

Update (16.3.2015.):

... and then someone has to ruin it for everyone ...
As 3dprint.com reports, mechanical engineering student at École de technologie supérieure in Montreal, Canada, named Antoine Rancourt Poulin made a hidden real knife blade with 3d printed comb attachment and handle. Probably highly illegal as concealed weapon ...

Source: http://3dprint.com/51252/3d-printed-comb-knife/

Update (24.4.2015.):

Group of Dutch students wanted to show security flaws and smuggled two 3d printed knives into a courtroom of the Palace of Justice in Den Bosch. The whole thing was done with courts permission as a sort of a test.
3D printed knives were tested to show that they can cut, stab and potentially hurt someone.

What is next? Taking some sharp wood sticks or stones trough metal detector to "prove" some sort of security threat?

From the source:
According to the court’s spokeswoman Ilse Westenenk, the courtroom regularly works together with the college. ‘That’s why we gave them permission, but obviously after checking they were actual Avans students,’ she said.
The spokeswoman further revealed that the court was already aware of these loopholes in the security system, but added that this experiment will not lead to a tightening of security.
‘We have known for some time that knives of this kind cannot be detected by metal scanners. 3D printed weapons simply require other security measures. But for now we will uphold the current balance between security and transparency,’ she said. The courtroom and its corridors are also patrolled by security personnel.
Source and more info: http://www.3ders.org/articles/20150424-dutch-students-smuggle-3d-printed-knives-into-court-to-prove-a-security-flaw.html

Update (23.6.2015.):

I attended an event about 3d printing in Osijek, Croatia and in a bunch of 3d printed stuff I saw a small 3d printed knife of the same design as used by Dutch students. I took a look and it seems completely useless. I don't think it would be capable of opening a paper envelope. Maybe it could be used to cut some very soft cheese. Waste of time. you can see it in picture bellow:

Update:

Here is a dagger printed on professional Stratasys SLS printer probably in nylon powder. Not much information is available. The source is unknown. It looks like Klingon design :-)

Update:

here you can see a knife prototype or fantasy prop developed and 3d printed/painted by SoupCan13

http://soupcan13.deviantart.com/art/Lil-Chopper-Knife-Prototype-324898124

Update:

Here is a serious and fully functional sharp metal knife 3d printed by laser sintering in titanium. The knife was developed for a sailing team as a safety tool. It must be very expensive.

Here is a DIY steak knife printed in some unknown organometallic filament which looks like more usable eating utensil but still bends:

Here is a kitchen knife printed with Protopasta's HTPLA carbon fiber filament by Josh Huges. It "cuts" the fruit and veggies but it is probably not so sharp.

Open Source 3d printed weapons project

There is an initiative for crowd-funding open source 3d printed .22 caliber weapons under the name Defense Distirbuted . It aims to develop singe disposable use small caliber pistol for personal defense.
This project will certainly bring out interesting debates in both open source and 3d printing community and get under spot light of mainstream media and law.
UPDATE: project promoters tried to  get funding trough Indiegogo, but Indiegogo canceled their campaign.
UPDATE2: they received 20000$ in  bitcoin, leased the 3d printer but the company canceled their lease. http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2012/10/3d-gun-blocked/

Similar concept was used in World War II with FP-45 Liberator mass produced single shot pistol which was simple and cheep to produce and was used by resistance movements.

What do you think?

EDIT:
This blog is in no way affiliated with people who work on this project, and does not support the idea. Information presented here is just news related to the development of 3d printing technology applications. Don't try this yourself, it is dangerous.

3d printed ATM skimmer found

Looks like someone used 3d printer to print out very realistically looking ATM parts to read out card data and capture PIN numbers. Skimmer was found in July of 2011 on Chase Bank ATM in West Hills, California.
IMHO: I somehow see criminals using it as sign of 3d printing technology paradigm changing power
