How do robots make robotic babies?

Stork? No. WiFi and 3D printing. Obviously.

A team of scientists at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam demonstrated how robots can evolve and reproduce. The first robot baby is a big step towards robotic ecosystems that can evolve in challenging environments. Two parent robots meet and exchange robotic DNA over WiFi which makes the baby in a 3d printer.

Happy 3D printed robotic family

Robots evolving and reproducing? Welcome to 2016. Also: I see no connections with any SF movie plots out there.

Precious Plastic DIY Plastic Recycling Machinery

Dave Hakkens developed a great set of open sourced DIY machines for recycling plastic. There are several machines including a 3d printing filament extruder. Every device is well documented with manuals, open sourced and uses simple and easy to find components. There is a shredder, extruder, injection molding machine and compression forming chamber.

here is the promotional video:

You can learn something about many types of plastics, which are everywhere! Like difference between thermoplastics and thermoset plastics:

3D printing filament extruder demo:

Here is a video explaining how you build it:

Here are some things you can make with recycled plastic, ranging from lamp shades to building blocs:

Project homepage where you can learn how to build each machine and about the plastics as a material:

http://preciousplastic.com/en/

You can find all the documentation on:

https://github.com/hakkens

Now, recycling plastics is great idea and useful skill to have, but will it decrease the usage of plastics in general? I do not have the data, but i have strong doubts that it will not. There is a something called Jevons paradox that notes that the more efficiently we use a resource, the rate of a consumption of that resource will increase.  Think about it ....

BTW: Dave is a very cool guy, do check his youtube channel: https://youtube.com/user/hakopdetak

Here is his pro-tip video on how to get organized as a DIY / Hacker / Maker guy with industrial plastic crates:

Open Surgery 3D Printed Robot

Frank Kolkman developed a DIY surgical robot made with some off-the shelf electronics and 3d printed parts. It is a home-made version of a 2 million dollar laparoscopic surgery machine made for some 5000 USD.
Naturally, you can not perform real surgeries with it (yet) and it is controlled via PS3 controller, but it is a demonstration of what can be made with simple technology for a low price.

3D Hubs accepts Bitcoin!

3D Hubs, a local 3D printing service now accepts payments in bitcoin! This is a major step forward to truly decentralized manufacturing economy!

From their press release:

Amsterdam, March 9, 2015

Bitcoin gets physical with 3D Hubs

Bitcoin payment service provider BitPay, and 3D Hubs, the world’s largest network of 3D printers, have just announced a collaboration that will integrate bitcoin payments through Adyen into 3D Hubs’ network of over 13,000 privately owned 3D printers globally.

The partnership follows the recent news of Adyen’s integration of bitcoin. 3D Hubs, the Airbnb for 3D Printers, is on a mission to make 3D printing accessible to everyone by connecting all the world’s 3D printers. The 3D Hubs model decentralizes production and promotes sustainability by eliminating the need for longdistance shipping. Today, the 3D Hubs network is providing over one billion people with access to a 3D printer within 10 miles of their home. 3D printing began in the early 80s as a form of rapid prototyping.

The original 3D printer, invented by Chuck Hull, involved using UV beams to solidify layers of liquid photopolymer in a vat. Since then, 3D printing has rapidly evolved, and 3D printers can now create products in a whole range of materials including plastics, resins, metals, ceramics, and even food. In fact, you can now create just about anything you can dream of.

This partnership connects bitcoin a decentralized currency to 3D Hubs’ decentralized manufacturing network, further strengthening the global movement towards decentralized industry.

Fully mechanical and analogue 3D printer

Daniel de Bruin made this fully mechanical and analogue 3d printer. No electric motors or electronic controls. Only weights, gears, chains, sprockets and pulleys will 3d print with clay paste and produce an 3d object.  Once operator raises the wight the printer is powered for some ten minutes by the wight moving downwards. The shape is "programmed" by bent wire guide.
The printer costs only €150 in materials, but required a lot of time milling, drilling and metal spinning, all by hand without the use of any CNC machinery.

Neurosurgeons successfully implant 3D printed skull at Utrecht University's UMC

Warning: open human skull and brains can be seen ...

We live in truly amazing time ...

From the source:
A Dutch university hospital has successfully given a 22-year-old woman a plastic skull, made with the help of a 3D printer. Utrecht University's UMC says the operation is a world first.
The woman needed the operation because her skull was becoming thicker, compressing her brain and damaging its function. Her cranium had become 5cm thick, while a normal skull is up to around 1.5cm.

Her medical team, led by neurologist Ben Verweij, decided to replace her cranium with a plastic one, produced by a specialist Australian firm. The operation took 23 hours but was a complete success, the hospital says.
‘Implants used to be made by hand in the operating theatre using a sort of cement which was far from ideal,’ Verweij said. ‘Using 3D printing we can make one to the exact size. This not only has great cosmetic advantages, but patients’ brain function often recovers better than using the old method.’
The procedure took place three months ago but the woman has now gone back to work and is symptom free, Verweij said.
The hospital says the technique can be used with patients who have other bone problems or to help recovery after people have suffered serious skull injuries.
Other hospitals have placed skull implants successfully in patients but this is the first time a complete cranium has been replaced, the surgeon said.

Project Egg - 3d printed collaborative art building

Some 3d printed structure art.

From project description:
Project Egg is about 3D printing, the power of Sharing and Co Creating, about new ways to create and collaborate.
Project Egg is a spacious building, consisting of 4760 stones. All stones are unique. They have to be 3D-printed one by one.
Once collected, all of these stones, placed in the exact order, give birth to this building.
The outcome of Project Egg, one of the first 3D printed buildings is first to be shown in Milan during the Furniture Fair in April 2014. After that it will hopefully travel around the world.
Everyone with a desktop 3D is invited to print one stone. This way, the printing community can be seen as a kind of a new and widely spread factory.
All people that sympathize with the project can be of importance too.
You can adopt a stone. When you adopt a stone, it is your stone but you will lend us the stone in order to establish project Egg.
We are looking for new horizons.
We want to connect the whole of the 3D print community.
We want to change the way we produce.
We shift boundaries.

Ultimaker 2 launch video

Ultimaker 2 launch by Erik de Bruijn from Ultimaker on Vimeo.

Yes, there is a new Ultimaker 2 out. I was on a vacation so I completely missed it. Cool and powerfull machine. In the expensive zone, but probably worth it. It remains open source. Hopefully there will be some independent testing soon.

https://www.ultimaker.com/pages/our-printers/ultimaker-2

Specifications and features of Ultimaker 2 from company page:

It’s a quiet machine and fits in almost any environment. By making use of different materials for the frame we created a printer with the exact measurements on the outside as the Ultimaker Original, but with a larger build volume. We went from X20,5 * Y20,5 *Z20,5 cm to X25,5 * Y25,5 * Z20,5 cm, so there is more space available in depth and width.
A heated bed in combination with printing on glass ensures that the material can be easily controlled. It also makes it possible to print with a wide variety of materials. When the glass is coated with a gluestick the material will have a better grip during printing. It will also make it easier to remove your print when finished as the heated bed cools.
Under the right temperature warping of your printed objects is ruled out for both PLA and ABS.
Apart from the Bowden tube we improved the entire extrusion system. Starting with the filament supply, the direct drive gives superb control so both supply as retraction will respond immediately. We’ve managed to get an even better print-to-size ratio.
The hot end is completely redesigned making it even more reliable. By using a cover and cooling several parts, the temperature of the hot end is more predictable and less sensitive to external elements. Our hot end is also all lot safer because it’s almost fully made of metal so you’ll never get a melted peek. The improved electronics take care of reliable control and monitoring of all of the electronic components in the printer.
