My First Impressions With Using ViaCAD

I had some time to play around with ViaCAD and it looks really interesting. I've downloaded the 14-day trial version and used a few simple daily tasks to see how it performs.

First steps in the program interface are very easy and you are greeted with a simple video tutorial on how to create a 3D goblet from 2D drawing in 60 seconds:





From the beginning, I wanted to focus on 3D printing tools which are a part of this CADs features.

The toolbar with 3D Printing tools can be activated in the "Window" menu.
























The interface is fast and fluid.

You can define your printer settings from a list of the pre-defined machine or set it manually:



































To see how other functions work, I imported the Voronoi "Broken benchy" by T-E-C from Thingiverse. It is a more complicated and harder version of the standard Benchy.





























You can check the printability of your model with "3D Print Check" tool. Here is the output screen with some of the errors found, with several being my mistakes of not properly aligning the object or setting the parameters correctly (like print volume).
Very useful!































"Surface normals" tool shows, you guessed it, surface normals :-)






























There are tools to show overhangs and wall thickness.

"Slices" tools will show animated slices base on several parameters, they can be saved into several formats. This is not a slicer which generates g-code for printing.





























"Support structures" tool enables you to create support pieces and attach them with a mouse click.

































With the "Position" tool you can place the object anywhere in selected print volume coordinate manually or with the automatic positions like "Center".

These basic tools were easy to use at this level, time will show how they perform in everyday work during a longer period. For now, I'm satisfied with this CAD software and will continue to us it.

Maybe I'll get them also in the future. The pack seems to have many tools in one place instead of using multiple apps and sites.

Thomas reviews 12 different bed leveling sensors

Herr Sanladerer performed a serious testing run with 12 automobiling sensors and made a video with the results.

Tested sensors were:

  • M8, 2mm inductive sensor (5V)
  • M12, 4mm inductive sensor 
  • M16, 8mm inductive sensor 
  • M16, adjustable distance capacitive sensor 
  • M16, 20mm capacitive sensor 
  • David Crocker's IR sensor 
  • SHARP analog sensor 
  • Microswiches 
  • BLTouch

The conclusions were:

  • If you have an aluminum bed, I'd go for the 2mm inductive type
  • For a glass-only bed, the BLTouch is a good option
  • With a PEI sheet or other stick-on bed surface, David Crocker's differential IR sensor is also a great alternative
  • The capacitive sensors are too sensitive to use seriously, and the SHARP type is not precise enough. 
  • Inductive sensors with larger trigger distances also work really well, but will need circuitry for adapting to 5V and are much larger than the 2mm type.

Testing 3D Printed Carabiner Strength

MatterHackers crew did a series of strength tests on different 3d printing materials with 3d printed carabiners.




TL:DW: Polycarbonate performed best.

Ultimaker 2 Vs. Print-Rite Who Wins?

Guys from Make.Test.Battle,Ryan and Kash do a casual comparison of the Ultimaker 2 and the Print-Rite DIY 3D Printer from HobbyKing, as well as learn the importance of bed leveling. 
They do a lot of Nerf toys modifications and upgrades with 3d printing. 

It turns out you really get what you pay for in this case. 

Why are 3d printers so expensive in Australia? Probably due to shipping, import and customs fees ... taxes maybe?

Testing 3D printed DIY arrowheads

Here you can see a video of a test featuring DIY 3d printed arrowheads and their effect on 3d printed chain mail and fruit :-) While 3d printed compound bows seem functional, these arrowheads seem completely useless.

There are still no reviews or third party tests but comments on forums are very positive and Wanhao is considered one of the better Asian manufacturers.

Here isa review by Thomas of a Malyan M150, a 3d printer that looks like a clone of a first version of Wanhao i3. it goes trough several problems and safety issues including possible false certification issues.

TestrBot DIY static dynamic tension and compression tester

Ever wanted to test your printed parts? Michael developed this project that uses 3d printed parts and can perform tension and compression test on various objects. It is very useful to get real results for different 3d printing materials and printing techniques. As it is easy to make with affordable price of around 300 USD it will certainly find place in many workshops.

Project description:
TestrBot is a $300 Universal Test Machine (UTM) and can be used to perform any type of static or dynamic testing in tension or compression up to 200 lbs. It was designed to run a gamut of physical tests on 3D printed specimens. 
3D printing is still new enough that there are many questions that do not yet have definitive answers. While the basic physical properties of raw ABS & PLA have been well established, there are still many esoteric material properties that cannot be determined without doing actual mechanical testing.
TestrBot is going to help the 3D printing community by figuring out these properties. As of this writing, I am at the beginning of the testing process but you can among the first to hear about the results as they become available by following blog here: www.EngineerDog.com

3DBenchy torture-test and calibration tool

You want to put your 3d printer to the hard torture test? Now there is a free high grade model and website for it: the 3DBenchy. It has a specially designed boat model that has all the different parts to test all various aspect of your machine.

3DBenchy models printed by +BjörnMarl to benchmark the left sliced with Kisslicer, on the right with Slic3r. He writes: "Both are within specs by 0.05mm, but the surface looks quite different. Also with Kisslicer the name on the rear of the boat is almost readable, no chance for that with Slic3r."

Autodesk Ember SLA 3d printer review and maintenance by Adafuit

RAMBo electronics DIY 3d printable testing jig

Youness Alaoui constructed this very useful 3d printable testing jig for RAMBo boards and stepper motors that enables you to run diagnostic and testing of your system before building it in a 3d printer.
It is designed for RAMBo 1.1B and 1.3L boards but since the files are available it could be probably customized for other controller boards.

Formlabs Form 1+ is new flagship SLA 3d printer (update: now with test and review)





Fromlabs released their new Form 1+ upgraded printer. It still has the same print volume as the previous version but performance is significantly improved.

The upgraded Form 1+ features:

Formlabs also has new black resin, because, ya know, black is a cool color. It will be priced at $149/liter. It may print up to 30% more slowly than other Formlabs resins at the 100 micron setting with the increased cure-time, but the results should be BLACK.





















Formlabs has also partnered with UK-based Express Group, a company that will help sell and service the Form 1+ printer in Europe. The printer will be priced at €2,799 in Europe or at $3,299 for USA market.

New day, new low cost printer from Asia. The bad thing about many new devices as this one, in my opinion, is that it uses some sort of custom cartridges (update: the cartridges can be hacked now and counter reset: look below)  and custom software. But on other hand, some people like that.

Update 5:

Da Vinci announced that hey will start to sell cheaper user replaceable ABS refill filament for their custom cartridges. It will be their filament and they will deliver it with a chip enabling the printer to recognize new spool. The refill will be sold in 25 - 27 USD range for 600g.
The company also announced that they will start to sell PLA filament also.
