TrussFab Builds Complex Structures with 3D Printed Hubs and Bottles

Researchers at Hasso Plattner Institute developed TrussFab system which enables you to design and build large complex structures like furniture, boats, and buildings. Hopefully, they will open source the software.

Project description:
TrussFab is an integrated end-to-end system that allows users to fabricate large-scale structures that are sturdy enough to carry human weight. TrussFab achieves the large scale by complementing 3D print with plastic bottles.  TrussFab achieves the large scale by complementing 3D print with plastic bottles. It does not use these bottles as “bricks” though, but as beams that form structurally sound node-link structures, also known as trusses.

Upcycle your old Prusa into a laser cutter

Jon aka. Dr3vil used a parts form old Prusa Mendel and made a close chamber DIY laser cutter / engraver. He documented his project on Thingiverse.

Jon writes:
I wanted to add a laser cutter/engraver to my shop and decided it would make a good design challenge based on recycling a Prusa Mendel - Essentially a frame of 5/16” threaded rod and 8mm rod with LMU88 bearings. The CAD models had to be simple to print, make what you can, buy what you absolutely must, and source locally. Ultimately this project is a primer for building gen III of my 3D printer and a larger gen II laser of many watts. As such I’m sharing an ‘as-is’ , ‘it got me to operational’ dump of the project STL’s, sanding and part prep will be required.

Firmware is Marlin configured for CoreXY. It was helpful to set a dummy thermistor value as this allows using the print bead and hot-end outputs as switches from gcode (M104 S100 and M140 S100, send S0 to turn off). The fans and laser power supply are switched, as usual fan PWM modulates the laser through M106.

Gcode generation is either by Jtech Inkscape plugin or 305 Engineering’s raster generator. For engraving PCB’s I ended up modifying 305’s code, borrowing a page from Jtech. The first change was having laser off moves run at full speed, since acceleration is handled in firmware this shaves a lot of time off the job. The second change was to have a pause when turing the laser on or off as to allow the edges of the burn to be more defined, 200ms was enough. Finally adding pre and post geode safe the machine when done and get in position.

Quick and easy way to recycle failed 3d prints in an oven

Devon shows hot to recycle failed prints in an easy and cheap way using your oven only. Basically you just melt them to get a flat thick sheet of plastic and use it in molds to get something useful.

Even if you keep it in the brick or sheet form it is easier to store, transport or build with.

You can cut the sheet on a band saw:

3D Printed DIY Battery Packs from Old Laptop Batteries

I found two old discarded batteries from HP and Lenovo laptops I owned which did not hold the charge and I was wandering what to do with them. I googled and found that they may actually hold 18650 battery cells that are still in working order. If the internal battery management system detects that even one of usually six cells is not in line with working parameters it will probably shut down the entire battery.

"Dead" laptop batteries. Used force and screwdriver to open them. Watch your fingers, you will need them trough entire life. You can see the 18650 LiPo modules in blue and green.

I discovered that there a hundreds of projects using the same refurbished module ranging from simple cell phone power packs to large solar system batteries.

Here is a tutorial on how to make a replacement hand drill battery pack with 3d printer and 18650 modules from http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1042761:

Here is a tutorial on how to create a larger battery pack with 3d printed frame modules for storage of solar power that can be used in small electric vehicles:

Thingiverse page:

http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1320696

There is large number of 3d printed projects with 18650 battery modules:

http://www.thingiverse.com/tag:18650/page:1

Also take a look at: http://www.instructables.com/howto/18650/

Do keep in mind that you will have to test each module and that there will be some that are just dead and can not be used.

Since you can make battery of any size, you can literally make a Tesla powerwall equivalent for a fraction of the originals 3500+ USD price. This guy made a DIY Tesla powerwall for some 300 USD:

Think about it: a battery for your entire house for just 300 USD made from junk old laptop batteries. You will probably have many many questions so I strongly recommend checking the entire content on Jehu Garcia YT channel. This guy is a battery guru!

Soon I'm going to visit our regional electronic waste processing company in town of Slavonski Brod to see if they can give me more old laptop batteries to salvage the 18650 modules.

Do you have any experiences with 18650 batteries or any projects you made? Let me know in the comments!

Precious Plastic DIY Plastic Recycling Machinery

Dave Hakkens developed a great set of open sourced DIY machines for recycling plastic. There are several machines including a 3d printing filament extruder. Every device is well documented with manuals, open sourced and uses simple and easy to find components. There is a shredder, extruder, injection molding machine and compression forming chamber.

here is the promotional video:

You can learn something about many types of plastics, which are everywhere! Like difference between thermoplastics and thermoset plastics:

3D printing filament extruder demo:

Here is a video explaining how you build it:

Here are some things you can make with recycled plastic, ranging from lamp shades to building blocs:

Project homepage where you can learn how to build each machine and about the plastics as a material:

http://preciousplastic.com/en/

You can find all the documentation on:

https://github.com/hakkens

Now, recycling plastics is great idea and useful skill to have, but will it decrease the usage of plastics in general? I do not have the data, but i have strong doubts that it will not. There is a something called Jevons paradox that notes that the more efficiently we use a resource, the rate of a consumption of that resource will increase.  Think about it ....

BTW: Dave is a very cool guy, do check his youtube channel: https://youtube.com/user/hakopdetak

Here is his pro-tip video on how to get organized as a DIY / Hacker / Maker guy with industrial plastic crates:

Design your own 3d printer from recycled parts with this FreeCAD add-on and web services

If you want to make a 3d printer from electronic waste and recycled parts from junk 2d printer, you will find this software tools very useful. They generate model of a 3d printer with FreeCAD plugin based on the parts you have. It should help you enormously to design your own custom 3d printer from available parts.

Example of the generated 3d printer:

The projects are still in development and I don't have enough knowledge to test it out but it looks very promising. There seems to be a link between those two projects but I'm not sure what it is.

You can try the web applications where you can input all of the parts and their specifications and get the output FreeCAD design:

RepScrap DIY 3d printer from salvaged InkJet parts made by Michael Ball

Michael Ball decided to make a 3d printer from discarded printer and scanner parts like some people before him. His build process is very well documented and very educational especially about motor and electronics configuration.  One of the projects goals is to create a 3D printer using DC motors and the salvaged Optical Encoder strips. You will also find his Arduino driver code on the project site.

The total cost of purchased parts for the build is around 355 USD. There are some low cost printers available for the same or lower amount, but this one has bigger print surface and the joy of building it.

Great work Michael!

Here is a video of RepScrap X-Axis DC Motor and Linear Optical Encoder repurposed from an old InkJet Printer. Arduino Pro-Mini is running the DC motor, and reading the high resolution Linear Optical Encoder for positioning.

3D Systems presents Cube EKOCYCLE 3d printer that works with filament made from recycled PET bottles

Revolutionary machine or marketing hype? You decide ...

New 3D Systems Cube 3d printer is just presented by will.i.am under Ekocyle brand and it seems like it is using new type of a filament made from 25% PET or 3 recycled PET bottles called rPET.

Partnership with Coca Cola is involved in production of this machine, which makes sense, since Coca Cola is probably the biggest producer of PET bottles that are burden on environment and economy of waste management. It is better to make something out of those bottles then to just bury them in a landfill.

Personally I don't like printers that work only with propitiatory filament cartridges that are usually more expensive then generic filament, but this model gives more incentive to buy for consumers who are motivated by environment protection.
I understand that they want to sell their machines, but if you really want to improve environmental impact of Coca Cola why not sell the filament directly for lower prices?
Also I couldn't find the prince of filament cartridge itself.
One thing is sure: 3D System continues to lead in front of Makerbot-Stratasys who seem to stagnate.

Interesting development, video is only available on youtube with no information on 3d Systems pages. More to come soon ...

printGREEN 3d printer from Slovenia

Can you guess with what material is this printGREEN 3d printer from Slovenia printing?

The material is mixture of water, fertile soil and seeds. After some time, seeds sprout and plants start to grow. It is a sort of design art  project but I think this technology could be used in some agricultural or gardening machinery.

The team behind this project:Maja Petek, Tina Zidanšek, Urška Skaza, Danica Rženičnik and Simon Tržan. They worked with assistant professor Dušan Zidar to develop it. The original name in Slovenian is “Tiskaj ZELENO”.
