SprintRay MoonRay High Resolution UV DLP 3D Printer

SprintRay presented their MoonRay high resolution UV DLP 3D printer. It will be priced at  3499 USD.

Key features:

  • Custom-built projector for 3D printing fine details: MoonRay’s resin requires UV light for proper curing. Other similar 3D printers use commercial projectors, which produce visible light but not pure UV light. The advantages of the custom UV LED projector in MoonRay are in the resolution and curing process. The MoonRay’s UV projector, RayOne, was custom designed with some special qualities:
  • Perfect light spectrum: The resin used for 3D printing cures under light with a 405nm wavelength. The custom-built projector hits the proper wavelength consistently across the build platform, which allows you to get real 100-micron resolution.
  • Runs cool and quiet: Utilizing a UV projector allows the MoonRay to avoid any overheating and makes it much quieter than other 3D printers.
  • Long lifespan: RayOne’s 50,000-hour lifespan means you won’t ever need to replace the bulb.
  • Revolutionary resin tank: the team designed the MoonRay’s resin tank to last, so there’s no more replacing your printer’s resin tank or changing the PDMS layer

Autodesk Ember SLA 3d printer review and maintenance by Adafuit

Ruiz brothers from Adafruit did a very useful review and operations manual for Autodesk Ember SLA 3d printer. They go trough many aspect of it including basic maintenance and Hall sensor troubleshooting.

Basic review of Ember:

More detailed guide, operations manual and usage tips:

Here is a very detailed guide on how to use Ember, basic maintenance and even how to repair the Hall sensor so you can align the printer:

How to build the cheapest DLP SLA 3d printer for under 500$ including projector

This is probably the cheapest DLP SLA 3D printer that you can build yourself for some 500 USD including the projector!

"Little Dipper" has a simple design that anyone can replicate with some basic DIY skills and it makes prints with reasonable quality.
The most expenisve par is the projector which you can get dfor some 350 USd new, but you could probably get it used somewhere. Other parts include simple z axis movement (screw or belt driven) on wood frame and Ramps 1.4 or Arduino controlled electronics.

Simple plastic vat and z axis screw drive

Objects 3d printed on Little Dipper

Objects 3d printed on Little Dipper. You can see the layers, but the quality is still great for the price.

Objects 3d printed on Little Dipper

Little Dipper DIY DLP Sla 3d printer. You can see all the elements with DLP projector on top.

Here is the project description from the makers:

How it works?
A DLP projector is used to cure UV setting resin one layer at a time while a moving axis drops incrementally into the vat of resin. A projected slice cures each layer and builds the part. This style of resin printer is different from a FormLabs 3D printer and some others in two ways.
  1. It uses a DLP projector rather than a laser to cure each layer.
  2. It shines the light source from the top rather than up from the bottom.
Advantages over laser based bottom up and DLP bottom up designs:
  • Simplicity
  • Lower start-up cost
  • Modifiable to bottom up
  • Fast build (~1 evening)
Major Components and Materials:

DLP projector

There are 2 known choices, although others may work.
  1. Acer P1283 DLP Projector
  2. Acer H6510BD DLP HD projector
Linear Slide/Axis

Almost any linear axis that is belt driven or screw driven will work. Project uses a minimal version of this:
http://www.openbuilds.com/builds/v-slot-lead-screw...
A more budget minded and adventurous person could even choose a drawer slide, but you may find that rigidity and smooth sliding in the z-axis will be a useful feature.

4x4 sheet of 1/2in MDF or equivalent material and hardware

The version shown here is as simple as it gets. 2 pices of MDF cut to provide a mount for the axis, projector and stable footing for the machine. Pretty much any kind of enclosure can be designed for this 3D printer. Your main objective is frame rigidity and ambient light blocking.

Ramps 1.4 or Arduino based electronics capable of running at least (1) nema 17 stepper motor
This build features a RAMPS 1.4 board, stepper drivers and an Arduino Mega 2650 with standard Sprinter firmware. There are some basic modifications needed depending on the hardware you choose. None of these modifications constitute needing to know anything in-depth about programming. The firmware used is modified for 5/16 standard threaded rod and has end-stops disabled. You can modify this firmware using the Arduino environment to further suit your needs.

UV Resin

Makerjuice.com, Madesolid.com are the two most seemingly popular and affordable options for UV resin suitable for DIY resin printers such as the one featured in this build. This build has been tested with G+ from Makerjuice. Funtodoo, Form1+ and Spark/Ember resin formulations are likely suitable.

Build Platform and Plastic Tupperware vat

This build includes plans for a build platform that fits a specific set of Tupperware available at "wallyworld". The benefit to the type chosen in this build is that you get a variety of sizes that scale easily, so that extensive design modifications are not needed. You will also need additional containers for post-cure/clean up of your resin parts.

Autodesk makes their Ember PR48 resin open source

In an unusual move for such big corporation Autodesk has made their PR48 resin recipe open source.
Kudos Autodesk! They even announced that they will make their Ember DLP 3d printer open source also.
It is licensed under http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/

Here are the reasons for open sourcing it from the source webpage:
  • We have an open approach, and encourage the use of 3rd-party materials in our printer. We include 3rd-party materials in the defaults for Ember's online model preparation and slicer, and are adding more as we optimize their settings for Ember: you can check them out at emberprinter.com. (You don't actually need an Ember to use the site.) This Instructable describes how to test new resins:
  • Autodesk is thinking differently about 3D printing, and sharing under an license reflects our commitment.
  • Open sourcing our resin formulation is only the first step in the journey of opening our 3D printer and our Spark 3D printing platform.
Here are the ingredients:
  • Photoinitiator: 2,4,6-Trimethylbenzoyl-diphenyl-phosphineoxide (TPO) 0.40%
  • UV blocker: 2,2’-(2,5-thiophenediyl)bis(5-tert-butylbenzoxazole) (OB+) 0.16 %
  • Reactive diluent: Genomer 1122 19.89%
  • Oligomer: Ebecryl 8210 39.78%, Sartomer SR 494 39.77%
Are those ingredients even available for open sale?

CreoPop 3d drawing pen that uses UV light for ink solidifying

Creopop is new 3d drawing pen that uses UV light for curing of the gel ink material. It doesn't produce any "dangerous" heat but the ink is more expensive then the standard filaments (which you can make yourself in filament extruder even more cheaper). Types of ink include elastic, magnetic, glow-in-the-dark, scented ink, body painting inks, ink that changes color with temperature and ink that conducts electricity made for school science classes.CreoPop is battery operated and charged through micro USB, I wonder if the battery is user replaceable.

It will be on Indiegogo soon.

OpenExposer low cost open source SLA 3d printer

Mario Lukas developed OpenExposer, low cost open source SLA 3d printer. OpenExposer is much more than just a 3d printer, it can also be used as UV PCB exposer, laser harp or show laser. It will have different modules for different uses.

Mario writes in project comments:
"The main focus of the OpenExposer Project is on the little red box which should contain all electronic and optical parts. This box should be clampable to different modules. The 3D printer which i am building currently is only one of those clampable modules. For PCB etching i am planing to design a module which works like a laminator."
The frame is made from standard RepRap rods and parts. The main part of 3D printer system is a small slit cut into the bed, and a build platform that moves in the Z axis. The bed contains a  UV laser and a polygon mirror recycled from a junk laser printer. By moving the bed in the Y direction, laser can be targeted anywhere on an X-Y plane. By adding a tank filled with UV curing resin on the bed there is a complete SLA printer.

It is currently still under heavy development but it looks very promising. There will be many problems to solve like varying focal length laser traces the arc from the polygon mirror since laser printers use a specialized type of lens to insure the focus is consistent, allowing a consistent spot size over the entire sweep of the beam.

Mani features:
  • unit for multiple laser exposing processes
  • Arduino compatible
  • low cost (standard laser printer) parts
  • case parts lasercut or 3d printable
  • up to 2 stepper motors can be connected
  • additional I/O ports for custom extensions
  • simple protocol
  • extendable host software

Aluminum frame DIY 3D DLP Printer by Dan Beaven

Dan Beaven build his own DLP 3d printer. Here are the results:

Dans DLP resin printer

DLP projector and mirror

AR15 rifle rail printed on this machine with graphite powder added into resin

The printer is built out of 1″ T-slot aluminum and has a NEMA 17 motor that provides the Y-axis movement along two linear rods for the vat. The Z-axis stage uses a NEMA 23 motor and has a whopping 14″ of travel. Combined with a 104mm x 204mm build plate, this DLP can print some large size objects.
To cure the resin, he is using a 1080p DLP projector (Acer H6510BD DLP) with no modifications. To conserve space, it is mounted at a 90 degree angle, and uses a small mirror to reflect the image onto the build plate inside of the vat.
To pump the resin in and out of the vat, it is using an industrial peristaltic pump bought off the eBay, it needs to be flushed with isopropyl alcohol after each use!

Asiga Pico 3d printer with solid state UV LED light source

Asiga Pico is specialist 3d printer with size of a small kitchen countertop appliance. It is designed with jewelry, dental and medical industry in mind. It produces wax polymer casting for metal parts or uses medical grade biocompatible resin for things like hearing aids. It is priced at USD 6990. It comes with Asiga Composer software.

The Pico is the first 3D printer of its kind to use a solid state UV LED light source. The LED lifetime is up to 50,000 hours and is not classed as a consumable, unlike other systems. The result is consistent curing from layer to layer, day after day, year after year. UV light allows broader materials choices, such as water-clear and pure white materials.
The Pico now has an improved resolution of 39 micron pixel size with a build envelope of 40 x 30mm (X and Y), and a build height of 75mm (Z). With the ability to grow parts in 1 micron increments in Z, the Pico is ideal for high resolution applications such as dental, jewelry and hearing. When building at 50 micron layers, the Pico achieves a build speed of approximately 6mm p/hr.

T.Black DLP 3D printer by Trimaker made in Argentina

South America is also developing more 3d printers. Here is T.Black DLP printer by Trimaker from Argentina.

Specifications:
  • Build volume: 180 x 235 x 180 mm
  • Positioning precision: 250 microns
  • Print speed: 20mm ~25mm / hour depending on the dye and the material.
  • Materials: rubber, rigid plastics and low viscosity plastic
  • Weight: 18kg
  • price: 38,720 Pesos ($4,936)

From company page:

PRINTING TECHNOLOGY
The printer is T.Black based stereolithography technology - the selective polymerization of the liquid resin with light. Unlike other inexpensive printers like MakerBot and RepRap, the Trimaker printer does not use a power head for depositing material during the printing process. Instead of using a head, the T.Black constructed by drawing the print object layer by layer with an optical projection - each layer of the object is actually a photo of each cross section. For each layer, the Trimaker projecting a light pattern on liquid resin solidifies and thus the parts constituting the object. The remaining resin can then be used as input for the next printing.
Advantage
More reliable technology.  T.Black technology is much more reliable because the control of complex mechanical movements is the part that usually fails. · High Resolution. Whether using light to build the object layer by layer allows a degree of much finer and more precise control. The resolution of your printer is more than 10 times higher than other inexpensive printers based on the technologies FDM (fused deposition modeling). The print resolution is one of the most important features that makes the difference between something with the quality of the prototype and the quality of the finished product and this is the main advantage of stereolithography technology. · Control of Color. use of liquid chemicals allows very flexible control of color printing. The user can change color very accurately by adding the proportion of dye which gives exactly the desired color. · Control of Multiple Properties. stereolithography process works with a variety of inputs. The designer can choose from a variety of materials with different degrees of hardness, density, transparency and other properties.

MADE IN ARGENTINA
The fact that both the hardware, software and materials develop in the country, are a great advantage for our clients when thinking about the after sales service, spare parts, supplies and personalized attention. Delivery times, technical support and input supply is greatly reduced on options imported printers today are available in our market. Finally, being a company Argentina, we will make all our releases, product testing, lectures and trainings, first in this market.
I'm not sure what technology tehy are describing in "control of color" part ... probably just a single tone of color in the resin ..

PCB etching with UV laser on Pegasus Touch SLA 3d printer

The Pegasus Touch team found out another use for their printer. UV laser can etch UV sensible PCB boards to make surface for electronic components. Pegasus Touch will get software upgrade to implement this function.
This could become standard feature in all UV laser equipped stereolitographic 3d printers, their software and drivers need some simple upgrades which will hopefully be provided by manufacturers or third parties.

One commentator on Hackaday noted:
Neat, but useful?
Currently I print my board on two transparencies, then aligning them on the UV-sensitized board, then placing whole thing under a UV light source. Two minutes of work followed by five minutes of wait?
This new method would have me remove the resin tank, align and mount the PCB to the build platform (double sided tape?), convert my gerbers to a jpg/bmp, then finally print to the 3D printer?
IF it’s saving time/money, it doesn’t appear that significant. Maybe if mounting and aligning the PCB was very quick and easy? Although I’m imagining a frustrating process involving double-side tape and wasted copper clad trying to correct the alignment.

So, this function could be useful in some situations and usage scenarios, but you will get the PCB etching job done faster if you are experienced user. This upgrade is simple software addon, so it is nice to have some extra features in a single machine.

3d printing with UV light curing resin

Phantom Geometry from Liz and Kyle von Hasseln on Vimeo.

This is ‘Phantom Geometry’, a masters thesis in architecture by Kyle von Hasseln and Liz von Hasseln, developed in the Robot House at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI_Arc). It was awarded the inaugural Gehry Prize at the SCI-Arc commencement ceremony on September 9.

This work is centered on the development of a system for generating material volume from streaming information. The system uses UV light from a modified DLP projector to continuously and selectively cure photo initiated resin within a shallow vat system we developed for the project. The cured part is simultaneously and continually pulled away from the vat, allowing un-cured resin to flood in beneath it to be subsequently cured. The result is the material reification of streaming data that emerges along the motion path of the Staubli robot maneuvering the vat/projector apparatus.

This system of fabrication relies upon native real-time feed-back and feed-forward mechanisms, and is therefore interruptible and corruptible at any time. The streaming data input may be transformed or modified at any time, and such interventions impact emerging downstream geometry.
