Peachy Printer Drama

Well, if you funded Peachy Printer Kickstarter, you may have funded someones house. Looks like most of funds were taken and misappropriated by one of the partners.

Here is the video describing the situation.

Crowdfunding and Kickstartering 3d printing campaigns will take a huge blow after this. Trust of community and backers towards any project will be hard to develop.

Looks like police has been involved, maybe we will see some solution of this in the future.

Here is Richard's take on the entire scandal:

He opens many new questions ...

Angus and his take on this situation:

Angus is right in his opinion that Kickstarter as a platform always get their cut but never take any responsibility for the aftermath of a campaign.

Limitless 3d printer and CNC mill hybrid

Project description from the maker:
Limitless is a revolutionary new automated multi tool. With Limitless, projects and ideas can be brought to life using one of many methods. Inventors and engineers can bring projects to life using the milling machine, 3d printer and other tools we plan to add such as a laser cutter. Limitless is a dynamic platform which is always changing to suit the needs of its users.

Unlike all other personal platforms, Limitless uses a robust controller similar to the ones found in industrial machines. We do not use all-in-one controllers for our automation. Each one of our large stepper motors has its own motor driver with separate power supply. We also provide the largest work space out of any other brand! With a granty clearance of 14 inches and a table size of 23.5 x 33 inches, we are the largest most versatile CNC combo tool one can buy!
With Limitless real prototypes can be produced! Since we have such a large work area, projects often do not need to be scaled down. Buy upgrading to our 6 axis controller a lathe option can be added as well, adding even more versatility to the platform. Also, all of our tools (Spindle, 3d printer, and, potentially a laser) are always installed on the “Z” axis, so there is no need to swap out tool heads. You just choose the profile you plan on using and you are good to go!

Draken DLP SLA 3d printer is new challenger in affordable stereolithography market

Draken by 3DFacture is new DLP based LSA 3d printer that wants to enter affordable stereolithography market segment.

Key features from KS page:

  • Traditionally, 3D printers fall into two catergories: high resolution printers costing thousands of dollars, or low resolution ones costing under a thousand. The Draken prints at 37 microns on X-Y axis and can print down to 10 microns on the Z axis, which results in printing features as fine as a strand of hair.
  • Draken prints  up to 8.66" tall with a 3.86" x 7.09" build base at 90 micron XYZ resolution, the largest and tallest among all personal SLA printers.
  • Because 3D printers can take several hours or longer to complete taller builds, it's important to reduce the noise pollution as much as possile. Draken makes almost no noise.
  • Draken is one of the fastest personal SLA printers in the market today.  For other SLA printers to print a 6.5 inch Statue of Liberty with 100 micron Z resolution, it takes anywhere from 6 to 8 hours. With Draken, it only takes 3.6 hours.
  • The inner printer frame is made of an integrated piece of high-quality steel, the outer shell is a single piece of aluminum alloy sheet, which assures the stability and precision of the printer.
  • Draken is so flexible that you can easily take out the commercial-grade high definition projector and use it to project HD movies.
  • The patent-pending passive peeling technique in the build platform reduces the adhesion  force at each layer separation and increases the printing speed dramatically.
  • For most SLA printers on market, the resin vat needs to be replaced every few months, because the silicone coating on the vat might get cloudy after extensive usage. In Draken, we bonded a thin Teflon layer on top of the silicon coating, which greatly extended the lifetime of the vat. You won't need to worry about frequent replacement of the vat anymore.
  • Draken supports all third-party resins. We have tested several stable resins for Draken with various properties. MakerJuice, MadeSolid, FTD, and even Formlabs resin work perfectly with Draken. Furthermore, Draken's materials development team has created our own resin, priced lower than all the others on market.

Functionalize F-Electric conductive filament is one big step towards 3d printed electronics

Functionalize F-Electric conductive filament is new type of filament with much improved conductivity properties. It claims to be world' most conductive filament with “one thousand times more conductive than filament available today", and "enables anyone to print circuits, wires, sensors, power connectors, and other electrical components inside projects printed from popular PLA-capable 3D printers.”

With conductivity lower then the 1 ohm/cm which they demonstrate in measurements on video ,it looks like it is “the world’s most electrically conductive 3D printing (plastic) filament that enables electronic or electromechanical capabilities to be designed right into the structure of printed parts.” Conductive 3d printing filaments available on the market mostly measure in the 1,000 – 10,000 ohms/cm range.

Possessing that kind of electrical properties, it can be used to build all sorts of interesting objects like this 3d printed levitator device:

  • Connectivity: USB
Using materials in for of pellets has many advantages with price being the main one:

3D printing with plastic pellets offers important benefits and advantages that are not available with current filament offerings:
  1. They are readily available in hundreds of new materials. This opens the door to a whole spectrum of new and interesting materials, each with their own unique properties. Some are rigid and incredibly durable, others are soft to the touch and extremely flexible. The result is the ability to print with greater flexibility.
  2. Plastic pellets are easy to use with the Sculptify 3D printer. If you can load a coffee maker, you can print with pellets in the Sculptify 3D printer. Pellets are loaded into the top, and ready to print in no time.
  3. They are the most cost effective form of plastic. Since pellets do not need to be optimized for a spool, multiple manufacturing and engineering steps can be removed. This saves a lot money, and the cost savings can be passed directly to the customer.

Currently several material options are under research at Sculpitfy:
  • ABS, Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene. Hard plastic commonly used in plastic car components and household items.
  • HDPE, High-density polyethylene. Semi-hard and durable plastic, used in milk jugs and plastic bags.
  • PLA, Polylactide. Hard plastic, biodegradable, made from renewable resources. The standard in 3D printing.
  • EVA, Ethylene vinyl acetate. Soft silicone-like material often used in shoes and sportswear.
  • Nylon. Hard and durable material that is often used in low-friction applications like bearings.
  • TPU, Thermoplastic polyurethane.
  • Rubber-like material that is often used in shoes and mobile device cases.
  • HIPS, High impact polystyrene. Semi-hard and durable plastic used in disposable utensils and containers.
  • PC, Polycarbonate. Very hard plastic that is typically transparent. Often used in safety glasses and DVDs.
  • Wood composites. Earthy look and finish, often used in synthetic decking

Strooder filament extruder successfully financed on Kickstarter

It looks like there are more new filament extruder projects showing up every day. Strooder from UK got successfully financed on Kickstarter. It uses usual screw feed system that moves pellets to hot end extruder.
I wonder will the business model of commercial filament extruder survive in competition with DIY machines that are very cheap and easy to make like Filament Factory and if the filament prices fall. Also there is new range of 3d printers that will be able to print from pellets directly.

Fully functional AirDog drone prototype developed with 3d printing

AirDog is innovative quadcopter drone that will follow you automatically and record video of your activity guided with electronic bracelet "leash" or smartphone app. The fully functional prototype is 3d printed in ULTEM 9085 production grade thermoplastics.

Currently it has several flight patterns that can be expanded in future:
  1. Auto-follow. Will work with almost any sports. In this mode AirDog will follow you repeating exactly your movement trajectory while maintaining its position in preset distance and altitude from you. It will follow you at speeds up to 40 mph.
  2. Relative position follow. In this mode AirDog will maintain constant offset relative to magnetic north from the rider. For example, you can set it to keep a 10 meter distance at 4 meters high to the east from your position. Even when you change your direction, the AirDog will stay at the same preset angle from you. We suggest this mode for straight line wakeboard cable parks, surfing, and some other sports.
  3. Follow track. This is the safest way to operate AirDog. Simply go for one lap with AirLeash and it will record your track. Then adjust AirDogs trajectory to your liking in smartphone app. AirDog will repeatedly fly over the exact set trajectory and the camera will be continually adjusted to aim at the rider. This is the most creative mode where you can become a true director of your movie. Adjust AirDog's trajectory to avoid obstacles like buildings or trees. You can even make it to shoot you from different angle on different spots/kickers in the track. It might sound complicated, but its a simple few tap process in AirDog smartphone app.
  4. Hover and Aim. The Hover and Aim setting allows AirDog to stay in one position above the ground, but constantly directing the camera at the AirLeash. This setting is perfect for tight places such as smaller skateparks, narrow forest trails, or for activities such as bungee jumping or base jumping, where clearance from equipment is important.
  5. Circle. In this setting, AirDog makes circular rotations on a set radius and altitude, keeping the camera aimed at the AirLeash. This for slow speed or static shots to show impressive view around you.
  6. Look down. The most simple mode but can produce very stunning results. Simply "walk" your AirDog above a ramp or kicker where you are about to throw some epic tricks and with push of a button it will freeze its position and aim camera straight down. Now make sure you don't go too high.
  7. When it goes into production it will be produced with injection molding and it is clearly indicated on the timeline.

It was developed with Stratasys:

From Stratasys blog post:
The working prototype, currently flying in demonstrations over the United States, was produced using 3D printing technologies from Stratasys, with guidance from Stratasys’ Latvian partner, Baltic3D, and Polish reseller Bibus Menos.
“As the world’s first auto-follow action sports drone, AirDog not only grants end-users their own affordable and personal aerial video crew, but goes one step further in providing thrilling footage from distances and angles previously inaccessible to such consumers,” explained Edgars Rozentals, Co-founder and CEO of Helico Aerospace Industries.
A production-grade thermoplastic (ULTEM 9085), popular in the aerospace industry for its high strength-to-weight ratio, was used to create the AirDog quadcopter. “We were particularly impressed by how far we could push the boundaries of the ULTEM material,” said Rozentals. “The material’s functional stability enabled us to 3D print very thin walls that further reduced AirDog’s overall weight.
For the AirLeash, Helico chose to use rubber-like as well as rigid materials in a single prototype, relying on Stratasys’ PolyJet 3D printing technology, which allows for the incorporation of multiple materials in a single go.
“I’m not sure how we would have arrived at the stage of having a functional part, were it not for Stratasys 3D printing technology. I founded the company two years ago and we’re a staff of three, so for start-ups like Helico, this technology isn’t just a game-changer, but the ticket to the game itself,” ventured Rozentals.
