Thor Open Source Robotic Arm from Spain

Thor is an Open Source and 3D printable robotic arm with six degrees of freedom developed by Ángel Larrañaga Muro from Madrid, Spain.

Its configuration (yaw-roll-roll-yaw-roll-yaw) is the same one that is used on most manipulator robots that currently exist in the market. In its upright position, Thor is about 625mm and it can lift objects up to 750 grams.

BQ Hephestos V2 3D Printer is Great for Flexible Materials

BQ is well known technology producer from Spain and they have launched their new Hephestos V2 3d printer. It has many powerful features but does not include heated print bed. Reviews show that it is ideal for PLA and elastic filaments due to extruder configuration.

Lewihe Play 69 Euro 3d printer kit from Spain

This must be the cheapest 3d printer in the world! 69 euro! BUT WAIT! It comes without some essential parts like motors, hot end, electronics ...
What is the point of this concept? I'm not sure ...
Maybe if you already have all the steppers and other parts or you salvage them you can easily get the frame ...
People are interested in it since the first batch is sold out so it must be a market niche for it ...

DIY contact 3D scanner with Arduino and FreeCAD

Here is a nice little 3d scanner made from various scrap parts and Arduino. It is a simple contact 3d scanner that produces a pint cloud in FreeCAD.

It uses only three potentiometers and two steel rods,  and the same potentiometers are also rotational joints. Arduino is sending the current value of the potentiometers to the python script, which calculates the mechanism position and draws the points inside FreeCAD.

This device was developed by Javier Martinez Garcia from Spain.

Using DC motors to replace steppers on x and y axis

Here is a new project of running a 3d printer with cheap DC servo motors. It was developed by misan from Spain and he used it successfully on x and y axis of his Prusa I3. Dc motors are controlled by Arduino Uno and the project is based on "servostrap" project. DC motors are cheap and can be found and salvaged in recyclable or scrap electronic device such as paper printers and others.

He made the code and bracket designs available. Thnx misan!

Project description:
This program uses an Arduino for a closed-loop control of a DC-motor.
  • Motor motion is detected by a quadrature encoder.
  • Two inputs named STEP and DIR allow changing the target position.
  • Serial port prints current position and target position every second.
  • Serial input can be used to feed a new location for the servo (no CR LF).
Pins used:
  • Digital inputs 2 & 8 are connected to the two encoder signals (AB).
  • Digital input 3 is the STEP input.
  • Analog input 0 is the DIR input.
  • Digital outputs 5 & 6 control the PWM outputs for the motor (I am using half L298 here).
  • Please note PID gains kp, ki, kd need to be tuned to each different setup.

Dimafix adhesive spray for heated beds

Dimafix is a new adhesive spray solution to improve bounding of printed objects to print surface and avoid warping.
This adhesive spray formula is activated when the temperature of the print surface reaches around 50C and up to maximum at 80C. The objects can be removed when the temperature drops below 40C.
It is priced at 9,48 euro per 1 unit DIMAFIX (400 ml / 10 oz). The spray is non-toxic, has low odor and it can be washed away from the surface with water.

Stalactite 102 HD DLP foldable 3d printer from Spain




New high definition DLP 3d printes comes from Barcelona, Spain. It also features different resin types like wax resin suitable for lost casting.

Stalactite 102 specifications:

They have also developed a palette of resins with different properties and applications:

  • PROTOTYPING: A hard and thought material, aimed at print objects that require improved physical properties. It has similar properties as ABS or Nylon plastic. Ideal for electronic housings, cogs, Iphone holders
  • ELASTIC: A resin with very peculiar properties: It's elastic and flexible. This opens up a world of options for your prototypes and props!
  • WAXY: It demonstrates similar properties to investment casting waxes. Once you print your model you will be able to use the lost wax investment process and cast your designs to bronze, silver, gold or any meltable metal. This resin is particularly well suited for jewelers and miniature figurines manufacturers.
They claim their DLP technology is superior to laser based resin 3d printers because:

  • Resolution: With DLP (Direct Light Processing) we can reach feature details of 50 microns, which is a six-fold improvement compared to Laser 3d printers that are limited by the geometry of the Laser beam (pointer diameter, varying shape, focus and raster speed).
  • Build Times: The Stalactite 102 builds each layer within a constant exposure time, making the size of the object within the X/Y build area independent of the build time. It doesn't matter how many objects you fit within the build area, print times will always remain the same, depending solely on the number of layers in the Z-axis. There's no rastering time, no head or pointer movement process, as is prevalent in the FDM, Inkjet and Laser 3D printing technologies.

Sneakerbots shoes printed in highly flexible Filaflex by Recreus

They look good, but probably wont' survive much walking  ...

During months we have investigated and work hard to develop the 1.75 mm filaflex format. Sneakerbots are the actual proof that shows filaflex works becoming in the most elastic filament on the market.
The sneakerbots by Ignacio Garcia are inspired by 80s films such us back to the future, starwars, short circuit etc.
Should be noted that the new design is more comfortables than first one. You can vary the softness changing the percentage of infill. The tongue makes that laces don´t hurt foot.

Good friends of mine went to Madrid and visited local hacklab / medialab the MediaLab Prado. Since they know I'm into 3d printing they sent me some photos of machines they use there (thnx Valent and Milijana). Hacklabs and other DIY spaces are spreading fast throughout entire Europe, even in the fringe countries such as Croatia. Our regional lab is nothing to compare to huge space of Medialab Prado (in fact it is just one small room) ...

AJ TV report on Foodini food 3d printer by Natural Machines


A Spanish company called Natural Machines has invented a way to print food using a 3D printer.The $1,400 printer, called 'Foodini', builds up layers of different ingredients, then pumps out the final product ready for cooking.The machine uses capsules of fresh, unprocessed ingredients and is intended to get more people preparing additive-free food in very little time.Al Jazeera's Sonia Gallego reports from Barcelona.
