Apple and Autodesk Patent Color 3D Printing (Apple patents liquid metal casting also)

OMG NOOOOO ... Apple files a patent for a 3d printer that prints colored objects with color being applied by separate nozzle. Maybe it's a tipe of defensive patenting or some corporate IP strategy. I hope they develop it and make it cool, but after Apple Pen fiasco I'm not getting my hopes up ...

Patent page:

PS: I am really not an Apple fan ...

Update (21.2.2016.)

Autodesk has patented color 3d printing also. Maybe it is the beginning of color patent wars.

http://3dprint.com/74984/autodesk-patent-multi-color/

Update (19.3.2016.):

Apple has filed for a new patent connected to 3d printing and molding technologies:
Apple’s patent application covers a method for 3D printing investment molds to be filled with molten amorphous alloy. These alloys are configured to form a bulk metallic glass (BMG) on cooling. BMGs, (also known as Bulk Amporhous Alloys) are a new class of metallic alloys that are extremely strong, with superior elastic strain limits and resistance under shock impact. They are therefore ideal for the manufacturing of electronic device housings and cases.

Using hydrographics to color and texture 3d objects

Hydrographic printing could soon become mainstream way of coloring and texturing 3d printed objects. It could be as easy as printing a matrix on your standard inkjet printer and using it with water container and some additional chemicals. There are many DIY dip kits and hydrographics kits but non specially made for 3d printing. Software will have to be developed to connect various process parts.

Here are two projects and demonstrations in this area that look very mature and ready for implementation:

Texture Mapping Real-World Objects with Hydrographics by Interactive Geometry Lab

Project summary:
In the digital world, assigning arbitrary colors to an object is a simple operation thanks to texture mapping. However, in the real world, the same basic function of applying colors onto an object is far from trivial. One can specify colors during the fabrication process using a color 3D printer, but this does not apply to already existing objects. Paint and decals can be used during post-fabrication, but they are challenging to apply on complex shapes.
In this paper, we develop a method to enable texture mapping of physical objects, that is, we allow one to map an arbitrary color image onto a three-dimensional object. Our approach builds upon hydrographics, a technique to transfer pigments printed on a sheet of polymer onto curved surfaces.
We first describe a setup that makes the traditional water transfer printing process more accurate and consistent across prints. We then simulate the transfer process using a specialized parameterization to estimate the mapping between the planar color map and the object surface. We demonstrate that our approach enables the application of detailed color maps onto complex shapes such as 3D models of faces and anatomical casts.

3D cat model colored and textured with hydrographics

Computational Hydrographic Printing from SIGGRAPH 2015

Project summary:
Hydrographic printing is a well-known technique in industry for transferring color inks on a thin film to the surface of a manufactured 3D object. It enables high-quality coloring of object surfaces and works with a wide range of materials, but suffers from the inability to accurately register color texture to complex surface geometries. Thus, it is hardly usable by ordinary users with customized shapes and textures.
We present computational hydrographic printing, a new method that inherits the versatility of traditional hydrographic printing, while also enabling precise alignment of surface textures to possibly complex 3D surfaces. In particular, we propose the first computational model for simulating hydrographic printing pro- cess. This simulation enables us to compute a color image to feed into our hydrographic system for precise texture registration. We then build a physical hydrographic system upon off-the-shelf hardware, integrating virtual simulation, object calibration and controlled immersion. To overcome the difficulty of handling complex surfaces, we further extend our method to enable multiple immersions, each with a different object orientation, so the combined colors of individual immersions form a desired texture on the object surface. We validate the accuracy of our computational model through physical experiments, and demonstrate the efficacy and robustness of our system using a variety of objects with complex surface textures.

I don't own dual extruder machine or have much experience with dual extruders so let me know your opinions and experiences in the comments. Thank you James for sharing the code!

ImproTable 1000 large 3d printer with multifeed mixing nozzle and Twin 3d printer

ImproTable 1000 is a big custom made DIY 3d printer developed by James Chang. It has 1m x 1m printing surface and unique mixing extruder with five filament input ports. It mixes the color of filaments and looks like it is working fine and fast.
There are no details or design plans of this machine released.

Here is ImproTable 1000 (great name btw ...) in action:

Here is a focus on the quint-extruder:

On James YouTube channel there is also a video of Twin 3d printer that has two separate independent dual extruders:

Hopefully we will find out more about James Chang and his machines in the future ...

Five filament  types of different colors go in the nozzle, what would happen when different filament materials would be mixed?

MakerBot patents material mixing extruder (Update: maybe appropriates prior public technology!)

MakerBot applied for material mixing extruder patent. The patent description is vague and it doesn't describe much details, only that two filaments type mix in some sort of filament mixer. This could provide color mixing or material properties change (ie. for support material).

This patent application could be some sort of "defensive" patenting, it doesn't mean that the prototype even exists and it doesn't need to be approved by patent authorities.

If this is real application we might see this technology in future Makerbots.

Makerbot extruder patent with extensive description:

http://www.google.com/patents/US20140034214

Ceterum censeo: the copyright and patent system is completely broken and must be reformed or, even better, fully removed.

Update (see comments also):

Jan Schmidt filed "prior art" complaint with the patent examiner since this patent has many similarities with extruder documented on RepRapWiki almost a year previous to this application:

http://reprap.org/mediawiki/index.php?title=Mixer_extruder

http://reprap.org/wiki/File:RepRapColourMixingReport-jmc.pdf

RepRap Mixer extruder, the similarities with MekrBot patent applications are obvious

So, could this be an attempt of major corporation to appropriate and patent publicly available technology?

MakerBot had some issues with copyright ownership on Thingiverse. Looks like they have same behavior when it comes to public / open source technology.

DIY post extrusion 3d model painting system by Kikai Labs

Kikai labs developed low cost system for painting 3d printed objects after extrusion with help of custom extruder with attached simple colored markers. It prints a layer and then paints it with the marker befor doing the next layer.

After development process they made following conclusions:
  • Multi-material printing capability is retained (PLA, ABS, PVA, Filaflex, HIPS, etc.)
  • Can print using more than 3 colors with markers, but it’s cumbersome.
  • Software: we have a colored-object slicer that works with Slic3r, yet runs external to it.
  • Pre-extrusion approach seems limited in detail achievable and in number of colors it can apply.
  • Purging plastic or ink quickly is a problem.
  • Painting arches, floor, overhangs: possible to do using transparent filament.
