Hack a Coffee Maker into a Delta 3D printer

Tropical Labs team made a coffee maker into a Delta 3d printer. Interesting hack. Tropical Labs engineers have been developing a flexible design for ultra-affordable 3D printers and this a part of their efforts.

Printer features:

Coffee maker, Tropical Labs used an old Norelco 12 model they found at a thrift shop, but any coffee maker with a hot plate could potentially work
Arduino Mega 2560
RAMPS 1.4
A4988 Stepper Motor Driver Carrier
Nema 17 stepper motors
Home switches, optical or otherwise
3D printer hot end/extruder – again, any kind will do; Tropical Labs snagged theirs on eBay
12V power supply
Solid state relay (Fotek SSR-40 or similar)
Ball joints
4-40 threaded rod

3d printing with waste coffee and clay composite

Francesco Pacelli experiments with mixture of used ground coffee and clay in order to get more stabilized mixture to print it trough a syringe.

After the deposition the object needs to be burn in kiln at some 1000 C where the coffee will be burned out and clay will harden.

3D printed NYLON permanent coffee filter

You can use nylon based filament to print functional permanent coffee machine filters or simple hot water filters. I'm not sure you could use PLA or ABS for it. Nylon is probably more heat stable and food safe with some water permeability properties. Here are some images of:

Here is a cool DIY project that guides you step-by-step in making your own fully functional electric coffee maker. I LOVE COFFEE!

It uses 3d printed parts as external structure and for lost PLA casting of aluminum parts. Hey, no one said it will be easy: if you want to do it yourself you will need to melt and cast aluminum. Stay safe kids.

Operating ceramic delta printer video by Jonathan Keep

Here is detailed instruction video on how to use ceramic delta 3d printer by Jonathan Keep. It explains basic software operations with Repetier host, clay preparation, clay printing etc. Very interesting.

Off topic: small DIY CNC mug printers

This type of DIY machines have some similarities and shared technologies with 3d printers. You can make them yourself as they are almost same in complexity as a 3d printer.
I see possibility to upgrade the technology to draw on various tubular shapes (like pipes), combine them with 3d printers to add decoration or replace the painting top with mill or laser cutter.
This segment of small DIY CNC devices will certanly expand in the future ...
