Tom Stanton 3D Prints his RC Flying Wing

Tom Stanton show us his trials and tribulations to get a 3d printed flying wing RC aircraft in the air. Interesting watch if you are into this hobby.

Here is the fully 3d printed flying wing being developed and tested:



The aircraft was printed from clear PLA filament with a 0,4mm nozzle at 220 degree Celsius to maximise the layer strength. Weight of the aircraft was 730g.

Pentacopter drone with 3d printed parts

... just a cool and unusual DIY pentacopter drone design I wanted to share. It uses 3d printed parts in motor housings and probably other structural sections.

FilaFab filament extrusion system and filament winder

Flex3Drive is flexible driveshaft based extruder system with some speed in it

Flex3Drive is innovative extruder system made by Mutley3D from Uk and developed by the CEO Jason Perkes.

Flex3Drive is a complete end to end, flexible driveshaft based extruder system offering several key advantages over other systems, including:
  • a lighter X carriage

Strooder filament extruder successfully financed on Kickstarter





It looks like there are more new filament extruder projects showing up every day. Strooder from UK got successfully financed on Kickstarter. It uses usual screw feed system that moves pellets to hot end extruder.
I wonder will the business model of commercial filament extruder survive in competition with DIY machines that are very cheap and easy to make like Filament Factory and if the filament prices fall. Also there is new range of 3d printers that will be able to print from pellets directly.

New SCARA 3d printer design by Sean (a.k.a. CLaNZeR) from UK based CNC Design Limited



SCARA 3d printers are not so common, but there is a new machine under development by Sean (a.k.a. CLaNZeR) from UK based CNC Design Limited. The prototype is currently in version MK3 with physical size of 25 x 25 x 40 cm and is expected to reach a theoretical resolution of 0.007 mm.

It uses Nema 17 motors with integrated drivers and 50:1 gearboxes in the arm joints.Using custom electronics, firmware and signal drivers the stepper motors can get up to 5000 RPM.

Fully functional RC plane made with 3Doodler

We already saw functional quadcopter made with 3d drawing pen, now there is fully functional flying RC plane made with 3Doodler by Matthew Butchard from the United Kingdom.






I had my suspicions about usability and application of 3d drawing pens like 3Doodler but projects like this prove me wrong.

RappiDelta Jr. low cost simple delta 3d printer



From Kickstarter page:
Rather than mechanical endstops the RappiDelta Jr. utilises slotted optical sensors which prove more repeatable homing and ultimately better prints. One of my stretch goals is to be able to offer auto bed leveling to further enhance the functionality and ease of use.
The remainder of the mechanical parts can be assembled quickly and easily with a couple of hex keys.
Once assembled the printer can print on a 17cm diameter circle and up to 17cm tall. These dimensions have been chosen based on my experience of what is actually reasonable to print as well as being based on a similar size to other entry level printers. In future you can increase the build volume by using longer uprights, and if required longer delta arms. The basic model has no bed heater and as such is limited to printing PLA (this is actually my preferred plastic!) but other options are available to allow the printing of ABS and other plastics that need bed heating. There is also an option to have an SD Card reader and LCD control panel to allow printing without a PC, something that I have found invaluable when developing my prints as it allows on the fly adjustments.
This delta projects wants to deliver cheap simple printer, with few easily assembled printable frame parts.

DeltaTrix 3d printer with detailed build instructions

DeltaTrix is open source delta configuration 3d printer project by Richard Tegelbeckers. It has very detailed Instructables building guide and features sturdy cnc cut wood frame with Airtripper Bowden Extruder, RepRapPro Tricolour hot end and RAMPS electronics. He will also Kickstarter it soon.

Technical specifications described in Kickstarter campaign:
The theoretical printing area is 280mm (11 inch) in diameter. As a square this works out as (almost) 200x200mm (8"x8"), which suits the used 'MK2A' heated bed. As it is also useful to be able to remove items, the gap between the uprights is just over 295mm. The maximum build height is around 280mm (11").
Main features:
  • Linear delta robot layout provides a mechanically simple motion platform for moving the print head only, not the workpiece.
  • Using a LCD display and SD memory card (supplied in our kits), the DeltaTrix 3D Printer can operate on it's own. It does not need to be attached to a computer.
  • There are several (Open Source) options in terms of software. At the moment we are using Repetier on the PC, a modified version of Marlin as the firmware on the RAMPS electronics, and the standard Arduino IDE for tweaking the firmware.
  • A heated bed with glass print surface, allows for PLA and ABS to be used as filament.
  • In terms of filament, the DeltaTrix 3D Printer is designed to accept 1.75mm PLA and ABS on a variety of 1kg reels, as long as it is of good quality.
  • Igus linear slides with pretension are used, providing a robust and durable bearing solution from a highly reputable manufacturer. The strengthening ribs on the uprights keep the rails straight and sturdy.
  • The current design print head assembly uses a single Reprappro Hot End, with a nozzle size of 0.3 or 0.5mm. The assembly also has a fan and integrated duct for cooling the top of a print.
  • Quick changeover print head assembly. Useful for swapping between two print head assemblies, eg. one for ABS and one for PLA. The prototypes use connection blocks, but the kit will have proper connectors. Please, note: the standard kit only contains parts for one off print head assembly.

Rolls Royce is getting into 3d printing of jet engines (or how the competition is growing in aerospace additive manufacturing industry)

GE is getting heavily into 3d printing, so it is unavoidable that other big companies such as Rolls Royce will have to get in it also in order to remain competitive.  It will be interesting to how this industrial manufacturing technology will develop and what will it mean for technological development and for the labor force.

The aim of the project is to over the course of three years explore the use of 3D printing to make aircraft engines in order to reduce their environmental impact. The project aims to use 3D printing “to allow environmental benefits including near 100% material utilization current buy to fly ratios result in massive amounts of waste, no toxic chemical usage and no tooling costs, to impact the manufacture of future aero engine components. All of these factors will drastically reduce emissions across the life-cycle of the parts. …. Light-weighting, and the performance improvement of parts will result in reduced fuel consumption and reduced emissions….Impacts will include the development of high value, disruptive AM technologies capable of step changes in performance which will safeguard EU companies in the high value aero engine manufacturing field. AM will significantly reduce waste in an industry where materials require massive amounts of energy and toxic chemicals, in-process toxic chemical usage will be massively reduced, and emissions will drop because of the reduced amount of material involved.”

LEGO2NANO challenge - making a DIY LEGO and 3d printed scanning microscope to study nano scale objects

Ultra-uber-cool! I hope for more improvements, final success in building it and that they open source it.

3d printed skateboard

It is more an art piece then a everyday skateboard ...

Please note that this skateboard is an art piece and not really for actually using. It is rideable, but as I'm sure you can see workout, it's not anywhere near the strength and pop of a good old 9 ply Canadian maple deck. This is not a comercial product and we're not saying that we're becoming the first company to manufacture 3D printed skateboards. That would be silly.**
www.3dprint-uk.co.uk - Sam Abbot is one skilled fella - he won our competition that we co-hosted with CGTrader last month. Sam won best the best portfolio catagory due to his plethora of awesome designs. We then had a few weeks of fun making his skateboard..... it wasn't quite as strait forward as just a print as the board is longer than our build tray, meaning that we had to cut it into 3 sections, joining it together with some connector pins to ensure accuracy and to give it some strength over a simple butt joint. The final result..... the worlds first 3d printed twin tip skateboard.

.... is it ride-able? Yes... but I wouldn't drop down many sets of stairs on it just yet!
