Design thin PLA objects and make them strong in your oven

"CNC Kitchen" published this great video on how he designed gardening clips for his raspberries. He focuses on how to design thin-walled object in Fusion 360 and how to make it more weather resistant and stronger by annealing them in his oven.

Ardumower Arduino Controlled 3D Printable Lawn Mover

Andreas Haeuser developed a 3d printable lawn mover. It is controlled by Arduino and looks easy to build on any FDM machine with some electronics knowledge.































Tech specs from the project page:
The 3d printed ardumower works on the same principle as its commercial counterparts, which can be bought for a lot of money at most hardware stores. It drives in the inner space of a “boundary wire fence” (BWF). If it comes close to this it stops, turns and then it goes on mowing your lawn continuously. The ardumower is well tested for a lawn size up to 500m². If your lawn is bigger you need a second battery or you should print a second ardumower.

In addition to a 3D printer and the needed filament (ABS and PLA) for printing the parts, only a few tools and resources are needed to build the chassis. These are mainly common hobbyist tools. You do not need a lathe or a milling machine. Every common 3d printer with a build volume of minimum 180mm x 180mm x 60mm (x,y,z) is suitable.

The ardumower is driven by two 12V geared motors. The cutting device is made from a 12V DC-motor and a cutter disc with a diameter of 220mm. The power comes from rechargeable 12V NiMH or 11,1V LiPo batteries.

Battery Powered Off-grid Forest 3D Printing

Woods are lovely, dark and deep ... but you can 3d print in them ..

3D printable remotely controlled snow blower toy

Someone under nickname The_Great_Moo redesigned Kyosho Blizzard SR remotely controlled snow blower toy part, upgraded the performance and made it almost fully 3d printable.
Everything is 3d printed except metal nuts and bolts
He printed it on his Da Vinci 1.0 3d printer in some 40 hours.

I couldn't find the files but hopefully they will be released...

Vinci DIY compound bow with 3d printed parts

Vinci is a DIY compound bow that you can make with 3d printed parts and some fiberglass limbs. This bow has some 30 pounds of draw weight in its current version, but it is a third version and the improvements are visible in each new build.
Many of the available parts could be used in other DIY archery projects.

Stratasys shows fully functional 3d printed skis

Check out Stratasys founder, chairman and head of innovation Scott Crump braving the slopes as he tests what could be the world's first 3D printed skis. These skis are fully functional, built on a Fortus 3D Production System using Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) Technology and ULTEM 9085 resin.
Stratasys Engineer Dominic Mannella designed and built the skis at our Skunkworks facility. He picked ULTEM because it's a strong and stable thermoplastic that endures a wide range of temperature and moisture conditions -- even a Minnesota hillside in a polar-vortex winter.
The ability to 3D print low-volume end-use parts could be a boon in industries like sporting goods, where personalized ergonomics and custom aesthetics are attractive.

There are many 3d printing projects in the field of archery. This 3d printed arrow fletcher has very organic and futuristic design.

Where is the future of 3D printed product design headed and why? Niche and pricy markets like arrow fletchers may see the soonest market disruption. A good arrow fletcher holds feathers accurately and securely in place while glue dries. This fletcher was printed and delivered at the market price of current ones. 
A helical twist in the feathers create arrows with better stability in flight, but helical fletchers are generally more difficult to manufacture, leading to very few that can fletch 3 feathers simultaneously. Instead of designing products with simple extrusions and assemblies of stamped parts, this fletcher asks where forces are actually needed, and how they can be satisfied with the least.
Depending on an archer's handedness and set up, different twists are required. Instead of buying the only fletcher that meets your requirements, you can select “18.5 Degree Twist, Clockwise Rotation, 12lb Glue Pressure, Style 2”,through a customizer such as OpenSCAD and click “print”.

23 springs, yet only four parts. By understanding the elasticity of the material, we can create products which clamp and stretch and bend in predictable ways without adding more parts to assemble. Freedom from draft angle or such other constrictions allows these shortcuts to be used more freely than they have been in the past.
To use:

  • An arrow nock is snapped into the base
  • Squeezing the arms allows feathers to slide in, glue is applied
  • The arms click into the base and are folded up
  • The arms snap - with audible satisfaction - onto any diameter of aluminum arrow
  • The feathers are now secure, and the glue is left to dry

Off topic: SenSprout 2d printed nanoparticle electronic circuits for air and soil moisture sensing

Printing technologies are expanding further. SenSprout is a device for monitoring air and soil moisture in order to optimize agricultural production and irrigation management. It is produced by printing the electronic circuits on paper with silver nanoparticles. It is powered by ambient radio frequencies (it harvests 2,4 GHz frequencies) and transmits data on same frequency.
I wonder how practical it would be for real life application since it looks fragile, it is currently deployed and tested. Even if not practical, concept is excellent technology demonstrator: downloadable printable sensors powered with surround electromagnetic radiation. Cool!
They use commercially available inkjet printers and commercially available conductive ink from Mitsubishi.

Applications of 2d printed electronic circuits are infinite, similar to 3d printing. Hopefully this technology will soon expand into DIY space. There are many corporate and academic developments in conductive inks, but conductive ink can be also produced in DIY / home lab setting (this one doesn't work on paper):
