Hangprinter

Hangprinter is an open sourced RepRap machine that uses walls and other surfaces as a frame. It literally hangs and prints. It makes a build volume an obsolete concept.

Using natural materials to 3d print buildings

Here is an interesting presentation on using different materials like clay, rubber, paper, wood, salt and other for 3d printing of buildings and architectural elements. The presentation is held by Ronald Rael from Emerging Objects.

WASP rotating mixing clay and straw extruder for 3d printing houses

Italian 3d printer company WASP presented a novel extruder for big machines that will 3d print houses in the future. Their clay extruder has a sieve and mixing auger and rotates as it deposits building material that can be sourced locally in poor countries.



Here is the project description:
Massimo Moretti and his collaborators don’t forget their main focus: to build 3D printed houses with a very low cost, expecially in developing counties. Now here we are to the turning point: WASP exhibit for the first time at 3D Print Hub in Milan the new extruder, completely redesigned, a rotating extruder.
It is a small revolution. Advantages are several. This kind of system require little energy, it cleans by itself, it can be assembled and disassembled in a very few time, it has a costant speed control. These technical solutions can be transposed in a bigger scale. This is the reason because WASP team consider this transition as crucial in 12 meters tall 3D print building, which is in progress. WASP will give very soon more details about this new fronteer, which has been reached thanks to the constant research.

3d printed extruder for continuous clay shapes

Scot A. Brown published a post on 3d printed rotational extruder "Rotruder" that produces continuous stream of clay objects. The rotating parts of the extruder form a mold when they are closing together.
Interesting concept and example of mold+extruder being made by with 3d printed parts. I think it could be used with other pasty materials or even food.
I have not found any design or technical documentation.It would be interesting to see the mechanism of power transmission that turns the six mold wheels.

3&DBot holonomic robotic 3d printer from Brazil

3&DBot is holonomic, omnidirectional wheels, independently moving 3d printing robot from Brazil. It can move on theoretically unlimited print surface and print with modeling clay, ceramics, earthenware and other pasty mixtures since it prints with a syringe based extruder.
The control is wireless (WiFi) from a host computer and via Arduino controller.

This small hexagonal printer was developed by staff at NEXT (three-dimensional experimentation lab) and LIFE (physical computing lab) of PUC-Rio design program.
The parts printed are very rough but the concept is working and probably will be improved in the future.

Here is the first holonomic drive 3d printer project which was unique at that time, and the movable part was the print platform. It was ultra cheap and made with recycled optical mice:

Sky Printer winch suspended LARGE clay 3d printer

Sky Printer is a BIG delta 3d printer which extrudes clay from a toolhead suspended on winches connected to room sized structure. Print results are still rough but the machine is in improvement phase and it is more aimed at artistic exploration. Similar gantry configuration could be used in even larger machines to print entire buildings.































From project description:
The Sky Printer is an adaptable, cable-based delta-gantry system that can span large areas with a minimal footprint. The Sky Printer is designed for large- scale applications in potentially remote locations. It can be understood as the evolution of the conventional 3d-printer.
We are a team of two architecture students from California College of the Arts in San Francisco. (team members: Thomas Monroy, Taole Chen)The project was developed in the FA14 Creative Architecture Machines Advanced Studio taught by Jason Kelly Johnson and Michael Shiloh (also check out the Digital Craft Lab which is the overarching research department at CCA).
We think the project has immense potentials that we were only able to graze in the two months we had to develop it and were surprised that no one has really attempted it before us. Although the cable-based system inherently has issues with stability, rigidity and may not be easily adapted to very precise applications, there are distinct advantage that point to an exciting future for computer-aided construction:
  • minimal material costs: compared to conventional 3d-printers and CNC-routers, the Sky Printer doesn't need a platform, it hijacks existing structures and topography to construct its own coordinates system. Thus, it can scale up effortlessly without adding exponential material costs relative to its size.
  • minimal maintenance: mechanical parts are minimized, therefore possibilities of failure are minimized. Also, it has the potential to be remote-controlled, allowing it to be deployed in hard to access locations.
  • ability to print on uneven surfaces
  • adaptability: We see tons of possible applications, as the adaptable system allows it to be set up in any environment with vertical surfaces, such as mining pits, abandoned cities, canyons, mars, etc
Within the constraints of the studio class, we focused on additive clay printing as a method to test the system, but the Sky Printer is really much more than just a printer, as we envision it to have an exchangeable tool set that would include grapplers, drills, spades, analysis tools, etc.

3d printing with waste coffee and clay composite




Francesco Pacelli experiments with mixture of used ground coffee and clay in order to get more stabilized mixture to print it trough a syringe. 
After the deposition the object needs to be burn in kiln at some 1000 C where the coffee will be burned out and clay will harden.





Fully mechanical and analogue 3D printer




Daniel de Bruin made this fully mechanical and analogue 3d printer. No electric motors or electronic controls. Only weights, gears, chains, sprockets and pulleys will 3d print with clay paste and produce an 3d object.  Once operator raises the wight the printer is powered for some ten minutes by the wight moving downwards. The shape is "programmed" by bent wire guide.
The printer costs only €150 in materials, but required a lot of time milling, drilling and metal spinning, all by hand without the use of any CNC machinery.

Jonathan Keep held a workshop at Burg-Halle University in Halle near Leipzig, Germany. He demonstrated 3D printing with locally dug clay, builder’s silicon, wax, sugar frosting, sugar sticks, sugar fondant and wood paste.

Keep is well known for his work with Delta printers and special extruders on clay and other materials such as chocolate.

WASP very large volume clay printing Delta from Italy






WASP is an acronym, standing for World's Advanced Saving Project. Their goal is to be able to build homes in third world countries with advanced 3D printing technology and use only locally available materials like clay and mud. 

They have Delta familly of printers:

  • MegaWASP, print volume: 400x400x400mm

Stratum Networks Delta Robot 3d printer

Stratum Networks Delta is a student project of clay printing Delta 3d printer. Design is published on Instructables and the printer is made with air compressor powered clay extruder mounted on lasercut plywood and acrylic frame.
The output clay objects look rough but the precision can probably be improved.





Project developers, Max Sanchez and Taylor Fulton, are architecture students at California College of the Arts. This project was based in a studio course called "Creative Architecture Machines" taught by Jason Kelly Johnson and Michael Shiloh.

  • EPK
  • CUSTER FELDSPAR
  • SILICA #5 325mesh
  • KENTUCKY BALL CLAY
  • DARVAN: Used as a deflocculant. A few drops of the fluid will make the clay compound more like a slip.
  • GROG: reduces shrinkage
  • WATER
