OPAM water cooled metal hot end

OPAM is a new all metal jot end with water cooling from Singapore developed by Leong Khit. It will be open sourced when the Indiegogo campaign finishes.

The design is simplified by:
  • Combining the nozzle, heater block and heat sink into 1 single piece of SS304
  • Using water cooling as it is far more effective than air cooling
  • Removing any PEEK or PTFE material
The benefits of a One Piece design are as follows:
  • No leaks/jams between the nozzle and heater block's contact surface
  • No galling of the nozzle's thread (since it is built-in as part of the design)

  • 1 piece construction (the nozzle, heater block & heat sink is combined into 1 single piece of SS304) to eliminate jams

German student Lukas Hoppe wants do develop cheapest SLS 3D printer which should be very affordable since it would be open sourced. Since it should use widely available parts it would cost under 2000 USD!

Mini Metal Maker is ready to go to production

Mini Metal Maker is a small metal clay 3d printer developed by David and Lindsay Hartkop. It extrudes special metal clay which is then air dried and fired in a kiln to get metal objects. Ideal for jewelry makers and other small fine metal specialists.
The first version of Mini Metal Maker had a very successful Indiegogo campaign in 2013. Now the new version if fully matured and is on Indiegogo again to move the production of the machines from their home to real factory..
They have developed it from a wooden proof-of-concept to a sturdy production-ready machine ready for this specific metal clay 3d printing market.

Reify Solus DLP 3d printer

There are many new DLP based SLA 3d printers and Reify3D Solus is a new contender in the arena:

CreoPop 3d drawing pen that uses UV light for ink solidifying






Creopop is new 3d drawing pen that uses UV light for curing of the gel ink material. It doesn't produce any "dangerous" heat but the ink is more expensive then the standard filaments (which you can make yourself in filament extruder even more cheaper). Types of ink include elastic, magnetic, glow-in-the-dark, scented ink, body painting inks, ink that changes color with temperature and ink that conducts electricity made for school science classes.CreoPop is battery operated and charged through micro USB, I wonder if the battery is user replaceable.

4AXYZ wants to 3d print solid wood with embedded electronics - but how?








4AXYZ started an Indiegogo campaign to raise one million dollars to create high tech wood 3d printing machine and interactive design service. They want to print in full real solid wood and with embedded electronics but they don't mention how or give any technology preview.
This campaign is very confusing with lots of hype words and very little tangible information ...
All the sites are just republishing this campaign without any questions ...

The T-Bone is a cape for the BeagleBone Black, dedicated for motion control. These are 3D printers, laser cutters, milling machines, and other applications using stepper motors.
The T-Bone will come preprogrammed for Reprap Mendel 3D Printer. Best kown in the Prusa Mendel or Prusa i3 variant. The Software will include low level drivers, the printer application and a high level Web Interface for control. Just connect your steppers, heaters and sensors, configure the software and you are ready to print.
To join highest performance with flexibility and easy programming, we use a very powerful concept: Hard- and software abstraction layers! User interface, configuration, G-Code interpreter, and path planner are running on the BeagleBone. This makes it easy to use existing open source software components, using the existing toolchain on the Linux operating systems of the BeagleBone. Real-time communication with the BeagleBone is handled by a small microcontroller, placed on the T-Bone. The microcontroller is fully compatible with the Arduino toolchain, so everybody can easily modify it. Complex acceleration and velocity calculations for the stepper motors are done by dedicated motion controllers. These are dedicated hardware components, developed to get the maximum performance out of a given stepper motor without putting any workload to the host system.

The low level drivers for the motion controllers and realtime applications are written with the Arduino IDE in C. The higher level applications for G-Code analysis, motion control and web interface are written in Python. There are no special hardware drivers involved. Most of the hardware can be used on the built in Arduino or BeagleBone Black. All software will be released as open source software on github.

Here are the main features of the basic board: 
  • 5 stepper motor driver (run syncronized, 3 x up to 4 A, 2 x up to 1.5 A)
  • 10 inputs for end switches (two for each axis)
  • 3 inputs for incremental encoders (3 axis supporting closed loop control)
  • 3 inputs for thermistors
  • 1-wire interface for digital temp and other sensors
  • 2 high power outputs (for extruder and heatbed, up to 12 A)
  • 1 mid power output (for fans, LEDs, ..., also expandable)

But that's not all. We are planning to create some additional expansion boards with special features. Here are some of the feature we are planning:

SAV MkI 3d printer electronics board

SAV MkI open source control electronics board made by RepRap CloneWars community is on Indigogo now.

This 3D printer board electronics has been designed and developed using all the great contributions and feedback from the RepRap CloneWars group in Spain. All shortcomings from other similar boards have been addressed providing an affordable yet feature rich 3D printer electronics. Rapide One 3d printer

It looks like PC case aimed at gamers / PC modders that has a 3d printer in it. Beside great design it has no other innovative features and there are no tests or videos of it working. It also uses some custom software and some sort of custom filament cartridges. I'm all for diversity, competition and options and like it's design so hopefully we will see more of it in the future.

While Current 3D printers are defined as Personal fabricators, there is so much more to personal fabrication than 3d printing alone! FABtotum allows anyone to explore the endless possibilities of a multipurpose fabrication device.
Thanks to a sturdy structure and unconventional tecnical solutions FABtotum is capable of subtractive machining without compromising 3d printing volumes or printing speeds.
Switching to subtractive mode is easy: just remove and tilt the double sided printing plane and expose the milling plane with built in fixtures to secure your workpiece.
Along with 3/4 Axis Subtractive Machining, Fabtotum is capable of 3-axis hybrid Additive / Subtractive manufacturing, meaning you can work in dual mode without loosing the position or having to move the workpiece.

Digital Aquisition:
FABtotum is capable of scanning solid objects thanks to a built in laser scanner (quick scan, medium quality) and one dimension (Z) touch probe digitalizer (hi-accuracy, very slow).
Using this feature you'll be able to unlock a whole lot of potential: scan and print duplicates of solid objects, create new objects with foams or modeling clay and scan them for further editing in a modeling software of choice, or print them in additive mode or cut/mill in subtractive mode.
Most 3d scanners cannot acquire small objects (such as a coin) and a physical digitalizer cannot acquire complex objects without at least 4 axis of freedom.
FABtotum can do both.
Scanning objects means you'll never run out of stuff to print, you'll be able to experiment with shapes or reverse-engineer objects around you, scanning and then duplicating a modified version!

  • Printing volume (additive) : 210x240x240mm (24 % in additive mode)
  • Milling Volume (Subtractive) : 210x240x[your milling bit height] mm
  • Scan volume (optical/digitalizer) : as much as accesible (up to printing volume depending on the object shape)
  • Scan Angular resolution: from 83 to 133 steps/degree in 1/16th microstepping mode.
  • CMOS sensor: 1024x768 or above.
  • 4th axis Milling angular resolution: as "Scan Angular resolution"
  • Z layer height: from 0.10 to 0.4 mm 
  • Z level minimum increments: encoder resolution 0,00047mm (0,47 microns) in 1/16th microstepping. (3mm pitch leadscrew / 200 steps *16 * 2 gearbox = 0,000467 = approx 0.47 microns. ,less than half a micron)
  • Additive materials: PLA,ABS : built in protected material storage/coil.
  • Subtractive materials: with onboard motor: Foam,Balsa,Plywood,thin Aluminium, brass alloys (PCB layer).
  • Additive head: 0.35 or 0.45 or 0.5mm nozzle , Bowden extruder. 
  • Subtractive tool: Onboard 30 Watt spindle. standard milling bits (3.25mm diam.)
  • Additional tool: space for tools up to 60mm mounting diameter.
  • Acquisition method: Laser Scanner (line laser) and Z digitizer probe
