Bake your PLA 3D prints in an oven for a higher strength

Thomas made an interesting experiment where he baked in an standard household oven some PLA (and other filament) objects. It looks like you can improve the strength significantly with this simple method.

See the entire process and measurements in his video:




With change in strength, there is naturally some shrinkage and expansion in different axis.

DIY 3D Printer Enclosure with Iris Mechanism

Youtuber "NerdVille" from UK made this 3d printer enclosure with nice iris mechanism on top that enables easy movement of filament tube and printhead. The heat doesn't escape and it improves the print quality.
The video also features design phase so it is extra interesting. The final version of eclosure is laserut from acrylic sheets.

Hacking IKEA tables into 3d printer enclosure

If you want to get high quality prints you can use a printer enclosure to stabilize the temperature making it a protective isolating chamber. Stable and higher temperature can prevent warping and other heat related damage to your 3d printed object.

Here you can see how to make a simple DIY enclosure from two IKEA "Lack" tables and some acrylic panels. It makes internal temperature stable at around 40 degrees centigrade compared to 20 degrees centigrade of room temperature. It also features extractor fan for fast cooling.

How to design and CNC cut wooden enclosure for your 3d printer

GuruBrew made an excellent tutorial video with step-by-step instructions on how to design and CNC cut wooden enclosure for your 3d printer. Video is very detailed and will guide you trough the entire process with valuable tips & tricks, software and tools used.

This is what the enclosure looks like:

































The enclosure is made out of .25 an .5 inch MDF wood and acrylic (plexiglass) plastic. It was cut ona Techno CNC router. It is designed in Solid Works and CAM software was VCarve Pro and Mach3. It was made for Maker Farm Prusa i3, but the design could fit or be addapted to most machines.

DIY 3d printer enclosure made from wood with hair dryer heating element


The enclosure developed by repkid is a simple wooden box made from thin MDF sheets and wooden beams structure. It is insulated by double-ply cardboard glued to the inside of the box. To prevent ABS warping it is heated by simple household hair dryer.

Low cost simple 3d printer enclosure made from plastic boxes




Cheap, simple and effective 3d printer enclosure made from two plastic boxes by rjacobsson.
He used Ikea boxes, but I think it will work with any plastic container and keep temperature of your print volume constant and elevated from surrounding.
It also reduces the noise and contains the fumes.
Like any enclosure without thermostat it overheat the motors but you should experiment until you discover what works best for you.

Maker Kase high end enclosure with thermostat




Maker Kase is marketed as "Universal Maker cabinet. Perfect for 3D printers, model makers, small CNC machines and open frame Bitcoin Miners". Enclosures and heated chambers are interesting and useful upgrade fro a 3d printer, they can be done in DIY fashion but it is good that something like Maker KAse is available.

They had an unsuccessful Kickstarter campaign, but looks like they are delivering it to the supporters:

3d printable cowling for enclosures with radiant heat source

Thingiverse user TimeFramed made a heater cowling for his enclosure. It is a sort of small fan driven air tunnel heat dissipation contraption :-) ... It improves heat distribution and makes it even trough the chamber.

 


























From project description by TimeFramed:
I've had real trouble with thin walls splitting apart, particularly on larger prints, (a. because they're larger, b. because the take longer to print -- i.e., overnight, and my printer is in an unheated shed).
Figuring the ambient temperature drop at night was the main cause, I decided to get an enclosure heater. And an inexpensive temperature controller. After installing and testing the heater, I found that using as just a radiant heat source was heating the enclosure surfaces near the element too much, so added a low-speed AC cooling fan (on the same relay, so it comes on with the heater. That solved the too-hot-in-one-spot issue, but tended to blow warm air onto one side of the print.
So, I made a cowling that funnels the warm air to the bottom of the enclosure, and to the front and back; to more evenly distribute the air.
The "stripes" you see on my 'top half' part are pieces from the first, horribly split, part glued onto the second print (that faired much better having been printed while using what survived from the first print).
The bottom half printed even better, while using the top half, and raising the extrusion temperature by 4 degrees.
Now I keep the ambient temperature of the enclosure at a toasty 38C.

DIY 3d printer enclosure and fume exhausting system

3D printing fumes are NOT good for you. Malcolm Langille made an enclosure for his Type A 3d printer with exhaust system to extract the fumes outside of his house.
I wonder how the temperature change and build surface cooling due to strong air movement affects the 3d print quality.
