3D Printing Parts for Cryptocurrency Mining Rig

Cryptocurrency mining is booming again with Ethereum currently being one of the most mined coins. In many countries graphics cards (GPUs) used for the process are hard to find or are much more expensive. For mining purposes, several cards are mounted on a single motherboard with a riser connector and attached to an open external rig for more space to get better cooling air flow.
Most mining rigs are self-built by the operators who always want to get the best price to quality ratio.

Here are a few very practical 3D printable DIY modules you can make yourself and use in your setup.

ZeroBot is a 3D printable FPV robot based on Raspberry Pi Zero

ZeroBot is a cool little 3d printable robot that is cheap and easy to make. Great for educational robotic projects. You can control it via the smartphone interface and all the software is available as SD card image. I'm making this!!!




Project description:
ZeroBot is a Raspberry Pi Zero W based robot. It can be controlled using any computer or smartphone via a web browser. The integrated camera module makes for a low latency video stream. In addition, the Raspberry Pi acts as a Wifi access point, so no router is required. The parts for the hull as well as the wheels can easily be printed on any regular 3D printer. 
Some of the key features are:

  • Analog control via a joystick (and multitouch)

3D Printable Parametric Slew Bearings

Christoph Laimer published  another very useful project. He developed a fully 3D printable and working parametric slew bearings. Since they are developed to be sturdy they can be used in many different project where a simpler 3D printed ball bearing would fail.
Since the design is parametric, you can adapt it to fit your needs. One version even has conical bearings.



























Project description:
Ball-bearings are very popular for 3d-printing. However they often fail for real applications. Using Fusion 360 I've created a parametric design of a "Crossed Roller Slew Bearing". The result is a pretty accurate and robust bearing. The bearing including the rollers is 3d-printed in separate parts. There are a few screws needed to clamp the two halves of the inner race together.

3D Printable DIY Rotary Tool aka. Dremel Clone

Makernaut developed and published this great 3d printable rotary tool or Dremel. It looks easy to make even with entry level electronics skills and has three 3d printed enclosure parts.

It is powered by 12V DC motor (listed as 6000 rpm, RS-550S motor, diameter~37mm), it has PWM DC motor controller (3A) and mini chuck / collet set for 3.17mm shaft to hold the tool bits.

Cool 3D Printable MGA Speaker with Laser Cut Plywood Grill

Here is another cool 3d printable speaker with modern design and the front cover that is laser cut from plywood with different design patterns. It is driven by RaspberryPi and you could probably install any compatible media center software.

Creators describe it as:
This 3d printed speaker is designed at the course Mechatronics Design at the Technical University of Denmark, in collaboration with Bang&Olufsen Create.
In a group of five: Karoline Gustaffson, Mads Olesen, Frederikke Foss, Christian Lundberg and Nicoline Hvidt, we designed, printed, cut and build the speaker, with guidance from our teachers and cooperates from B&O.
The speaker is meant for the kitchen where it can be put on the wall or laid on a table. It is designed so that the front cover can easily be taken on and off so the speaker reflects the specific mood. It is also a great opportunity for customizing the speaker.

Cool vintage omnidirectional speaker design you can 3d print

While checking out new designs on Youmagine, I found a 3d printable copy of vintage omnidirectional Harman Kardon HK-25 loudspeakers. Each speaker consists of a top and bottom part. The bottom is designed to hold a 50mm "metallic" driver speaker that can be found in many cheap "iPod" speaker docks.

This will probably bi my next 3d print for a small home sound system.

Shannon from Australia published this great tutorial on how to make easy DIY 3d printable earphones with cheap parts. Anyone can buy Beats and just follow the hype, but only few can claim they maid their phones by themselves. Great project!

DIY Spinning Wheel Made On a 3D Printer

Peter Kobrin design and 3D printed a spinning wheel for his wife. Spinning wheel was used to make yarn or thread from fiber (like raw wool) which were then woven into fabric. All parts are 3D printed except bearings, hooks and tubing. Parts are made on Prusa I3 in PLA.
It is a great example of how you can use modern technology to recreate a device which was used in centuries past.


He will publish the designs when he is finished with the development.

Simple DIY Air Heat Exchanger You Can Make With Your 3D Printer

Air heat exchanger is a useful ventilation system part that will enable you to save energy while maintaining a good air flow in your enclosed space. It uses the outgoing air form the heated space to warm the cold air that is going from outside. Heat is thereby recovered and energy consumption for heating decreased.
They are mostly used in passive or low-energy houses or buildings, but they can be used in most insulated spaces. There are also applications where you can cool the air coming in.
The entire system is also called Heat Recovery Ventilation (HRV). You maintain air flow which improves indoor air quality, reduces bacteria and mold buildup, stabilizes the moisture but you don't need to open the windows and still keep some 70-80% of heat that would normally be wasted.

Yvo de Haas developed a small DIY 3d printable version that he implemented in his house with excellent results. The heat exchanger itself is printed in PLA while tubing is standard PVC with standard 60mm fans to drive the air. The electric fans can be noisy but they can be easily replaced with quieter ones.

He developed two versions of this DIY HRV: one that is partialy 3d printed and one that is fully 3d printed.

Here is what Yvo writes about the fully 3d printed unit tech specs:
The completely 3D printed version is, as the name suggests, completely 3D printed. To make it I modified my Ultimaker with an E3D V6 with 0.25mm nozzle.
The walls of the exchanger are 0.3mm thick. The outside dimensions of the exchanger are 15x8x7cm but it has an internal surface area of around 1000cm² (1/10th of a square meter or about a square foot). It is printed in PLA and takes around 10 hours to print at 0.16mm layer thickness.
With special adapters it can fit 60mm fans and all the other adapters I have designed special adapters were printed to connect the 60mm fans to the 3D printed exchanger.

Yvo measured and logged the temperature data:
The 4 temperatures (unit does not matter):
  • Hot in (the warmer air that enters the hot side of the exchanger)
  • Hot out (the warmer air that exits the cool side of the exchanger)
  • Cool in (the cooler air that enters the cool side of the exchanger)
  • Cool out (the cooler air that exits the hot side of the exchanger)
Does it work?
The answer, YES. After running for over 8 hours while I was at work, the air was a lot fresher. Usually when I come home there is a certain staleness to the air, but now I came home to nothing. Just nice air. I had the logger running for the entire time. The test started around 8 o'clock, every number on the X is 6 seconds. There are 3 zones of interest.
0-3000: Here the air outside is slowly heating up. Temperatures around this point are: HI: 17°C, HO: 10°C, CI: 6°C, CO: 14.5°C, giving 63.6% for the hot flow and 77.3% for the cool flow, averaging 70.5%.
3000-4000: Here the sun hits the window and there is a spike in temperature. No useful data can be gathered from this time.
4000-6000: The air outside is slowly cooling. Temperatures around this point are: HI: 17°C, HO: 12°C, CI: 8°C, CO: 15°C, giving 55.6% for the hot flow and 77.8% for the cool flow, averaging 66.7%.

Manhattan Pegboard Organization Elements

Pegboards are hard to find in Croatia and they are also expensive. If I could get them I would put them everywhere and use this 3d printable DIY pegboard organizing modules to store everything.

3D Printable Tetrahedral Box Kites: Triforce and OpenKite


Triforce Kite


Sergej Bekauv designed and printed this DIY tetrahedral kite named the "Triforce Kite". 

It is a fully functional flying folding kite with 3d printed structures (27 trusses) and lift surfaces made from Mylar (spaceblanket or emergency blanket type of material).

Open Kite


Open Kite is an open source tetrahedral kite project developed by Sehun Oh. Here is his description of the project:
The project brief was about designing a product for play. While I was trying to explore the world of play, I was fascinated by Little Shining Man (Heather & Ivan Morrison, 2011), a huge cubic kite which consists of hundreds of tetrahedral cells, and I decided to explore this intriguing architectural structure.
During the process, I designed 3D printable components for easier and faster kite building and I also found out a way to make the structure collapsible, so that it can be flatten when not in use. Little Shining Man is basically a flying sculpture, so it can be transported on a truck and displayed or stored at a gallery.
Whereas when people build large kites with open kite components, it is collapsible for easier transport and storage. Consequently, this tetrahedral kite becomes a more accessible 'product'. I am also planing to publicise the kite component data for 3d printing as an open source project so that people freely download and make their own tetrahedral structures.

DIY computer based on MOS 6502 CPU with 3d printed enclosure

Dirk Grappendorf made this DIY computer based on 8-bit MOS 6502 CPU that was used in many popular home computers of the 1970s and 1980s like the Commodore 64 or the Apple II with 3d printed case.
He has detailed documentation so you can go step by step and make it yourself.

DIY 3d printed water cooler block for small electronics

Instructables user Unprecedented developed a useful little 3d printable cooling block for his Raspberry Pi. It holds a copper penny on the bottom as contact to hot chip and it has plastic tubing taking in cool and taking out hot water and thus cooling the chip.

It can be used on variety of electronic parts with Raspberry Pi and other small computers being the obvious choice if you are into overclocking. Water cooling is silent and can take away large amount of excess heat. It goes without saying, if the water leaks out it will badly damage your electronics.
You could also use 3d printed peristaltic pump to push the water or just have it stream from faucet ...

It would be interesting to see how much could the design be enlarged ...
