GE has 3D printed a working small jet engine

New advancement from GE where they managed to 3D print fully functional small metal jet engine. It runs up to 33,000 RPM. Soon someone will make open source version of it. That would have some interesting implications.

Cost reduction and time saving blow mold production with 3d printing





Blow molding is process mostly used for manufacturing of various containers such as bottles. With the help of 3d printers the time of mold production is reduced by 90% and cost are cut by 94%.

Blow molding is a manufacturing process used to produce hollow plastic parts, such as bottles and other containers. Blow mold design and the specification of process parameters require skill and precision. A small change in the pinch--off or vent design, die temperature or blow pressure can dramatically affect the molding results.

Prototyping enables designers to validate these parameters and accelerate design approval. But up till now, high costs and long lead times have deterred blow mold prototyping.

Additive manufacturing, or 3D printing, makes prototyping a viable option. In this brief video you will learn how to produce cost-effective blow molds using PolyJet-based 3D printing from Stratasys.

GE develops metal powder cold spray 3d printing technology

GE is intensively researching and using various forms of 3d printing. This is new approach where they use "cold spray" technology to spray metal particle paint layers on metal part and form a shape. Since it can be applied on metal surfaces, it can be used to repair a part as well as make a new one. This could result in huge savings in complex metal parts repair or maintenance.

From GE site:

Spray technologies are particularly attractive for the production of large structures, which are challenging for today’s powder-bed additive manufacturing processes due to equipment size limitations. 
The cold spray technique has the potential to scale up to build larger parts, with the only limitation being the size of the area over which metal powders can be applied.
Cold spray—also known as 3D painting—demonstrates a unique marriage of materials, process, and product function which can, in the immediate future, transform repair processes for industrial and aircraft components such as rotors, blades, shafts, propellers, and gear boxes.
Since cold spray does not require heat, like common repair processes such as welding, it allows a repaired part to be restored close to its original condition. In GE’s Oil and Gas business, GE researchers are exploring cold spray as an alternate way to repair or coat parts involved in oil and gas drilling and turbo machinery.
Cold spray’s future benefits include extended product lifespan and reduced manufacturing time and material costs, all of which translate into significant customer benefits.

See the Slow Mo Guys film GE researchers demonstrate a process called "cold spray", in which metal powders are sprayed at high velocities to build a part or add material to repair an existing part. GE researchers are exploring this 3D painting technology as an alternate way to repair or coat parts involved in oil and gas drilling and turbo machinery. To see the process on film, the Slow Mo Guys spray copper particles 10 times bigger than normally used for this process.

Sciaky announced a release of several new electron beam 3d printers for industrial applications. next to their well known flagship large volume EBAM 300 series, Sciaky has released the EBAM 150, 110, 88, and 68, with nominal part volumes all listed below:

  • EBAM 150: 146” (3708 mm) wide x 62” (1575 mm) deep x 62” (1575 mm) high
  • EBAM 110: 106” (2692 mm) wide x 47” (1194 mm) deep x 63” (1600 mm) high

Sintercore LLC released the first 3D printed metal firearms part for pre-order today. Neal Brace, founder of Sintercore and a former active duty U.S. Marine Corps infantryman, designed the device to help firearm operators more effectively control their rifles and pistols under rapid fire.
The device, named AuxetikTM, represents a significant advance in firearm industry manufacturing. The word AuxetikTM is derived from the Greek word “auxetikos,” which means “that which tends to increase.”Mr. Brace’s invention consists of a fully-dense Inconel muzzle brake created using direct metal laser sintering technology.Sintercore’s HYLT (hybrid linear / transverse) brake technology reduces recoil, eliminates muzzle rise, and minimizes concussion.
This technology is based on 3D printed linear gas vents, a Sintercore innovation, which allows an amount of gas to flow forward from one expansion chamber into the next expansion chamber through channels that could not be easily made in traditionally manufactured cast, machined, or EMD’d part.Sintercore products are sold directly from the manufacturer’s website, at http://www.sintercore.com The AuxetikTM muzzle brake retails at $399.98 and is available at a pre-order price of $299.98.

Sintercore now writes on the durability of their muzzle brake:
Our T&E examples have currently survived 8200+ rounds of semi- and fully-automatic firing with no performance degradation. The fully-dense, 100% Inconel superalloy construction lends itself to maximum durability for a lifetime of use. This material is as strong as steel and as corrosion resistant as titanium.
