3D Printable Mortise and Tenon Jig for your Dremel

If you need a cheap DIY jig for mortise and tenon making for your woodworking projects here is a simple 3d printable version that uses a Dremel tool for cutting out the wood.
It was developed by Crafted3D since he needed a cheaper alternative for a 1000USD standard router.







There are a few non-printable parts like a metal clamp, but this is a great low-cost shop tool. You could also design different templates for the shape of your tenon/mortise parts.

Big Benchy RC Boat

You like making the 3DBenchy? Now you will like it even more with this project! Kim developed a larger version that can float and has an RC control for a small electric motor. It is 3d printed from several modules and held together with ABS-juice which also makes it watertight.

New DIY CO2 Laser Cutter Project

Here is a new DIY CO2 laser cutter project from Instructables. It was developed by Michiel Deschout and uses relatively available materials and parts like 3030 aluminum T-slot profiles, Arduino and some 3d printed parts. The total cost was some 1900 Euro.
The presented setup uses 40W laser, but the power could probably be increased.

Aluminum Profiles DIY 3D Printer by Thomas Workshop

I always like to see new 3D printer designs and builds by different people. Recently I found this larger volume (40cm3) machine by "Thomas Workshop" on Instructables. It is fully made from common aluminum profiles and Thomas did put some effort to document and present his work process.
Test prints look good and the frame seems sturdy.

3D Printable DIY Rotary Tool aka. Dremel Clone

Makernaut developed and published this great 3d printable rotary tool or Dremel. It looks easy to make even with entry level electronics skills and has three 3d printed enclosure parts.

It is powered by 12V DC motor (listed as 6000 rpm, RS-550S motor, diameter~37mm), it has PWM DC motor controller (3A) and mini chuck / collet set for 3.17mm shaft to hold the tool bits.

3D Printed DIY 1/16 Ratio Gearbox for DC Motors

Tomi Malkki made a 1/16 ratio 3d printed gearbox that he uses to modify torque and RPM of salvaged DC motors.

Project description with gearbox specs:

This gearbox has the ratio of 1/16. With this 12v motor it can lift around 3,5kg (straight from the shaft.) 2 washers should place between each gear (see details in video). It reduces heat between plastic parts when 2 washers are rubbing each other. Adding lots of bearing grease between everything is essential. Depending on your printer tolerances you might need drill out some holes bigger. Motor mount should be standard size.

Gears:

  • layer 0.2
  • infill 25%
  • perimeters 3
  • bottom layer 2, top 3

Covers:

  • Layer 0.3
  • infill 20%
  • perimeters 2
  • bottom layer 2, top 3

He also cleaned all the surfaces with oil and dirt cleaner, then added a layer of primer, 2 layers of surface paint and 2 layers of clear lacquer, he is using acrylic spray paints.

This is a very useful DIY project that can power many small projects like RC vehicles or robots.

Add DIY electric power on your longboard with 3D printing

Yow Hwui Low used 3d printing to add DIY electric motor drive to his longboard. He documented and published the entire process.

Longboard specs:
  • This board can reach speeds of up to 42 km/h and has a range of over 16 km. The average pace of daily rides is around 15 - 20 km/h. It weighs around 8 kgs.
  • Fully 3D-printed drivetrain with built-in idler system in ABS. Tested over 150 km as of March 2017.
  • Max. Speed: 42 km/h

DIY rotational casting machine made from wood and 3d printed parts

If you want to expand your home manufacturing arsenal, here is a very useful machine that will enable you to make hollow objects from various types of resin.
This machine is easy and cheap to make from 3d printed parts and 15mm MDF sheets cut on a CNC machine. It was published on Instructables by Jorge Dorantes.
It is hand cranked, but it could probably be easy modified to run with a simple electrical motor.

Make your own DIY vacuum thermoformer

DajoM from Instructables published all the files and instructions needed to make a low cost DIY vacuumformer / thermoformer that fits on your desktop. You can use it to make plastic molds or patterns for production of larger series of objects.
It is made from laser cut plywood and uses ceramic plate for heating. Several parts are 3d printed.

DIY Gauss Meter with 3D Printed Enclosure

Anthony aka. "Proto G" published this Instructable where he made a useful DIY Gauss meter which is controlled with Arduino Nano. 

Project description:
In this instructable, I will show you how to make a Gauss meter than can measure the strength of magnets so you can compare different magnets you have. It measures the magnets in units called Gauss and has a relatively linear range from 0-4000 Gauss. It will measure beyond that but the numbers beyond 4000 Gauss should only be used for comparison purposes. In addition to measuring the field strength, it also detects the polarity of the magnet and will show North or South, respectively. My favorite part about this design is the ON/OFF switch. It's hidden in the enclosure so the meter can only be turned on and off with a magnet. Since this unit is meant to measure magnets, you're sure to have one on hand. You can use the same latching magnetic switch I designed for many other things like a secret compartment lock. Here's a video showing the complete assembly:

Captive Nut in 3D Object Integration Tutorial

If you want to have a metal nut that fits inside 3d printed part perfectly here is a great tutorial. It also includes a part how to design it in a a CAD software.

A captive part is a piece of hardware that is embedded or attached to another such that it's "trapped" inside. This is particularly useful in applications where you want to mount something like a tensioning nut or a leadscrew nut for linear motion. This can also be used to integrate other components, such as electronics or magnets.

DIY SLS 3D Printer Made For 400 Euro

Vulcaman from Germany developed a DIY laser sintering (SLS) 3D printer that you can make for some 400 Euro or 450 USD.

Technical specifications:

  • 1W 445nm laser diode
  • 8 x 8 x 8cm build volume
  • 36 x 54 x 60cm outer dimensions
  • CORE-XY movement
  • speed: 60mm/s tested, 300mm/s possible
  • costs around 400€

Since the nylon powder that commercial SLS printers use costs some 200€ per kilogram, developer used much cheaper black powder for powder coating. This gear was printed in black powder coating material at 60mm/s it has dimensions of 3 x 3 x 0,5cm and took one hour to print.

3D Printed and Laser Cut Open Source DIY Air Purifier

Ian van Mourik, a product designer from the Netherlands developed and open sourced an air purifier anyone can make. It is autonomous since it is controlled with Arduino and uses simple fans to move air trough particle filters and activated carbon.
It costs around 70 Euro. It has some laser cut parts from plywood but you could cut them manually or use different structural support since they are mostly decorative.
Looks like a great solution to improve your home air quality by removing dust and destroy mold particles or pollen (which I'm allergic to). Just keep in mind to change the filters or upgrade them with HEPA. Carbon filters get used up relatively fast.

Reinforcing thin concrete objects with 3d printed mesh

For some DIY projects you need thin concrete or cement walls. They are prone to brake under tension or fall impact.
Instructables user "ucn" from Singapore wanted to make strong thing concrete molded business cards and successfully reinforced them with 3d printed mesh frame. It looks that this technique works great and could be applied to other concrete projects where you need internal reinforcement structure.
