Hangprinter is an open sourced RepRap machine that uses walls and other surfaces as a frame. It literally hangs and prints. It makes a build volume an obsolete concept.

Aluminum Profiles DIY 3D Printer by Thomas Workshop

I always like to see new 3D printer designs and builds by different people. Recently I found this larger volume (40cm3) machine by "Thomas Workshop" on Instructables. It is fully made from common aluminum profiles and Thomas did put some effort to document and present his work process.
Test prints look good and the frame seems sturdy.

BlackBelt 3D printer works with conveyor belt print surface

BlackBelt is a new 3D printer that uses a carbon fiber conveyor belt as build surface. As it prints at an angle it can produce really long objects.  It can make many different objects in series or one big object.
Due to geometry and angle, some objects will need a "starter" object or support to hang on to.
It is also possible to print support-free overhangs!




































BlackBelt specifications:

  • Industrial linear guides
  • Build volume of 13″ x 13″ x infinity
  • Adjustable print angles: 45° is the default, but some parts come out better at the lower angles of 15°, 25°, and 34°
  • 1.75 mm filament diameter
  • €9,500 for desktop version, €12,500 for large system with standing supports

This machine looks very interesting, but what gets me suspicious is a lack of video material. There are only a few short videos and no reviews, tests or extensive presentations.




Update (19.06.2017.):

BlackBelt went on Kickstarter and they announced that they have a patent pending, the 3d printing community claimed that there are issues about that since there were similar open sourced systems.

Why Millebot?

Millebot is a large 3d printer that lives inside a shipping container. The idea behind it looks interesting...




... BUT

Why use this strange paste / foam for 3d print? and then mill it afterwards?

Building retainer walls for anything? Are you serious?

The operation will need a LOT of electrical power, material and overall complex logistic support.

Nice try, but I think it still needs a use case and overall technology improvements.

How crazy are the Finns?

Well ... besides crushing various thing in a hydraulic press they also use LARGE 3d printers at Prenta to make molds for pykrete stuff. Pykrete ammunition to be more specific.




And then they use that ammo in a BIG air cannon:

Blackwolf 3D Printer Developed in Croatia

I was surprised when I saw Blackwolf for the first time at a Maker Faire in my regional capitol. Blackwolf is a large 3d printer with full enclosure that is developed in Croatia, city of Sisak.
Hopefully we will get more information about it soon.

One Big Machine and Two Rockets

Here is a really big DIY 3d printer with two 3d printed hobby rockets. It looks like it is some 2 meters tall has some 1 square meter build surface.
Supporting structures appear to be CNC routed from some type of wood.

Update:

This machine is the "Printzilla" made in fablab Moscow by Michail Michalin and Vladimir Kuznetsov. It has 0,8 x 0,8 x 2,0 meters printvolume.

World's Largest 3D Print from ORNL

Oak Ridge National Laboratory made the world's larges 3D print that was recognized by Guinness World Records.

From project description:
Researchers at the MDF have 3D-printed a large-scale trim tool for a Boeing 777X, the world’s largest twin-engine jet airliner. The additively manufactured tool was printed on the Big Area Additive Manufacturing, or BAAM machine over a 30-hour period. The team used a thermoplastic pellet comprised of 80% ABS plastic and 20% carbon fiber from local material supplier

The tool has proven to decrease time, labor, cost and errors associated with traditional manufacturing techniques and increased energy savings in preliminary testing and will undergo further, long term testing.

Industrial Size 3D Printed Wind Blade Mold

How big can you go with high-end industrial 3D printers? VERY big! Here is a wind blade mold for research in wind power.
The mold for making the blades is being printed using the Big Area Additive Manufacturing (BAAM) machine at the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. BAAM is 500 to 1,000 times faster and capable of printing polymer components 10 times larger than today’s industrial additive manufacturing machines. Since the molds will be used to create research blades measuring 13 meters (42 feet) in length, BAAM provides the necessary scale and foundation for this ground-breaking advancement in blade research and manufacturing.

E3D is well known for their hot ends but now they have this great looking machine on Kickstarter. It comes at a good price, several versions and it is fully open sourced and hackable.

Hacking together a totally new design in a couple days from spare parts lying around-- #6. That served as the model for this fine specimen - #7. Thanks again to Steve, Nick, Mark and Caleb.
The Printrbot Pro is aimed at those who want a very large build volume but don't want to pay the big bucks for other options out there.

It's also the most expensive printer we have ever made, but will be less than the MB Z18. But, not gonna kid ya, shipping will kill you.
We will post pics, video and details immediately. We won't have it at Makerfaire, though. After reviewing it today, I have some details to refine after we get back... Then it's ready for prime time.

We will sell this bot a bit differently... Doing a waiting list and making them one at a time. I may actually interview the potential buyers to be sure of a good fit. We hope to keep a slow steady pace with this one since the market is presumably small. I have a handful of clients already lining up... Really interesting to hear what people plan to do with them! It is intended for businesses and education.

It's still early, but the world will see it in a couple of days anyway. Even though there is a punch list of things to refine, I wanted to share it on the first day I saw it cut with its own software.
That's right, Printrbot makes software, thanks to Mick and Sean - the two newest members of the Printrbot family. Mick is the coder / maker in the pic.

Crawlbot will feature cloud-powered project sharing-- software that runs in your browser but works offline too. Tinyg and raspberry pi team up to run the show here. Mick been working on the software for months. The hardware idea was the usual Brook and Brian brainstorm followed by boots on the ground making it a reality. Thanks to Steve (lead), Mark, Nick, & Caleb.

WASP rotating mixing clay and straw extruder for 3d printing houses

Italian 3d printer company WASP presented a novel extruder for big machines that will 3d print houses in the future. Their clay extruder has a sieve and mixing auger and rotates as it deposits building material that can be sourced locally in poor countries.



Here is the project description:
Massimo Moretti and his collaborators don’t forget their main focus: to build 3D printed houses with a very low cost, expecially in developing counties. Now here we are to the turning point: WASP exhibit for the first time at 3D Print Hub in Milan the new extruder, completely redesigned, a rotating extruder.
It is a small revolution. Advantages are several. This kind of system require little energy, it cleans by itself, it can be assembled and disassembled in a very few time, it has a costant speed control. These technical solutions can be transposed in a bigger scale. This is the reason because WASP team consider this transition as crucial in 12 meters tall 3D print building, which is in progress. WASP will give very soon more details about this new fronteer, which has been reached thanks to the constant research.

New Ultimaker 2 family members: Ultimaker 2 Go and Ultimaker 2 Extended

Ultimaker just released their two new 3d printers: Ultimaker 2 Go and Ultimaker 2 Extended: Go is smaller, portable and with non-heated printebed while Extended is 10 cm (4 inches) taller and gives you bigger printvolume.

The Ultimaker2 Extended is priced at $3030, some $500 more than the original, while the Ultimaker2 Go, is priced at $1450 Both will be available for pre-order in April 2015.

On a personal note, I'm little disappointed I expected more from Ultimaker then just different sizes. I thought that's what MakerBot does... I know that they are in direct competition and that there is probably market demand --- but still ... more innovation would be good ...

BetAbram construction 3d printers from Slovenia

Slovenia is our little neighboring country to the west and they have several 3d printing projects like: KORUZA laser wifi, PrintGreen and TroubleMaker 3d printer. Now they have a bigger  machine in the game that can print large concrete structures or buildings with BetAbram series of large 3d printers.
The machines are moving on a rail system and feature metal gantry with extruder that deposits concrete / cement mixture layers.

BetAbram has three different sized printers: P1, P2 and P3. Z-axis height is theoretically unlimited since it can be extended with a rails systems to print tall buildings. 
In the X and Y axes, the P3 can 3d print buildings with plate surface of 4 meters x 3 meters (12 square meters), the P2 is capable of 12 meters x 6 meters (72 square meters), and the biggest, P1 is capable of 16 meters x 9 meters (144 square meters).

Prices will probably range starting from 15000 euro up to 30000 euro.
