Aluminum Profiles DIY 3D Printer by Thomas Workshop

I always like to see new 3D printer designs and builds by different people. Recently I found this larger volume (40cm3) machine by "Thomas Workshop" on Instructables. It is fully made from common aluminum profiles and Thomas did put some effort to document and present his work process.
Test prints look good and the frame seems sturdy.

Laser Engraver from Discarded DVD Drives with 3D printed Frame

If you have few old DVD drives and an Arduino Uno you can make a simple laser engraver for some 15 USD. The supporting frame can be 3d printed or made from any material you can hack.

How To Design a Chainring Using Open Source Tools

Rich Olson has another great tutorial on how to design and make chainrings using open source software and low cost CNC.

Rich makes a chainring for his bicycle but they have different uses in power transmission. Beside metal they can be also made on a small CNC from other materials like carbon fiber.

Simple Tutorial on Effective 3D Printed Objects Painting

Here is a great 3d printed model paining tutorial based on real life experiences of Cliff Mellangård. It will show you how to paint your larger printed objects for optimal aesthetic effect with common dyes and simple technique.





Cliff also developed FunBot Pro and FunBot i1 3d printers that are very cheap to make even for the novice builders.




DIY digitizer with detailed construction guide

Nikolaj Møbius from Fablab RUC developed a simple and cheap DIY digitizer 3d scanner that can record points in a physical space and convert them into a 2D vector drawing for laser cutting or 3D printing.
It is made with three rotary encoders and gets a points measures controlled by Arduino. Since it currently does only measures more suitable for 2D capture it is ideal for CNC or laser cutting with very good results.
Since the software is in early development phase we can expect better 3d scanning or 3d point cloud capture soon.

It looks very easy to build even for the beginners.

Here is the description of current limitations:
So far the system is designed to record a 2D surface and convert it into a PDF vector file. The Z axis is simply ignored in the output. Since the system actually records in a 3D space it is possible to export a 3D object for post processing. This is mainly a matter of implementing a another export method.
However, since the arm is not able to reach around an object in a 3D space it will not be possible to record all the points necessary to make a full 3D object (Update: In the source files we have a version with a rotating platform now). One possible workaround would be to implement a rotating base which would enable the arm to approach the object from all sides. Further, the software is only a usable prototype, but could be evolved into a much more solid tool.

Machinable wax 3d printing filament for lost wax metal casting

YT user aonemarine made this video review of Machinable wax 3d printing filament made specially for lost wax casting. You print the object you want in wax, make a mold and melt the wax away to poor molten metal in it.
The lost PLA casting method is well known but it needs much higher temperatures to melt the PLA away. Wax is much easier to work with.
There have been some wax-like filaments and resins but there is still no wax filament solution that is well established. Maybe this will be the one.

How to install simple and effective automatic bed leveling

GuruBrew has published this excellent video tutorial on how to make your own automatic print bed leveling.
It looks easy and it will help you with your calibration and improve print quality. It takes a normally closed micro switch and a small RC servo, customized Marlin firmware and 3d printed probe mechanism.

How to use friction welding to repair and make 3d printed objects

Friction welding works with both PLA and ABS.

While good people of Hackaday think this is a new 3d printing technique it is actually used for a quite some time now.

Video tutorial on how to use Marlin EEPROM functions




You can store Marlin setting directly in EEPROM memory. On each boot, Marlin will automatically load these settings from EEPROM, independent of what your compiled Configuration.h says.

The Marlin EEPROM settings include the following:
  • Steps per mm
  • Maximum feedrates [mm/s]
  • Maximum Acceleration [mm/s2]
  • Acceleration
  • Retract Acceleration
  • PID settings
  • Homing Offset
  • Minimum feedrate [mm/s]
  • Minimum travel feedrate [mm/s]
  • Minimum segement time [ms]
  • Maximum X-Y jerk [mm/s]
  • Maximum Z jerk [mm/s]

QuadStrap low cost 3d printer with large volume and no 3d printed parts

QuadStrap is machine developed by Dr. Shauki Bagdadi, it is designed to produce other printers and therefore has no 3d printed plastic parts. It is ultra low cost with price at some 300 euro for 1 cube meter of print volume. That is very affordable!
It moves with transmission by mason cord or packing tape which further lowers the cost.

How to create model for 3d printing from CT or MRI data with open source 3D Slicer





This very detailed tutorial was prepared by Nabgha Farhat, Brigham and Women's Hospital. It describes, step-by-step how to extract specific data form CT scan and convert them into format from which it can be 3d printed. She isolated portions of the mandibular bone and the temporal bone for the model. Freee and open-source Slicer software was used.

Update 2 (5.10.2014.):

Here is another video tutorial by Oliver Krohn on how to convert DICOM CT or MRI images into 3d printable models. It uses different software tools.
Preparing DICOM images (CT/MRT) for 3d printing using Seg3D, Imagevis3D (University of Utah, CIBC) and Meshmixer. 
Seg3D offers the advantage to apply filters, but it's not absolutely necessary. Imagevis3D can load DICOM stacks as well and the rendered isosurface may be exported as mesh directly. In this video I used the gaussian filter of Seg3D to smooth the model a little bit.
