PrusaControl - a new software interface from Prusa3D

Prusa released a new software aimed at beginners: the PrusaControl, which is a simplified interface for Slic3r Prusa Edition.

Here is the description from the news release:
PrusaControl is an alternative user interface for Slic3r Prusa Edition.
Slic3r Prusa Edition was the first step with a great success and we are extremely proud when people mention they switched back from S3D. But Slic3r has one problem, it is rather complex and intimidating for new users. We cannot do much about this, it is its nature. And that is why PrusaControl was born. It is parallel to Slic3r PE for newcomers to 3D printing, we distil the settings down for the user and put our knowledge to the backend to get the same results. The main goal is to open an object and hit print. PrusaControl is simple, novice friendly and smart.

MK2S is being rolled into production and it comes several improvments.

How to Convert Direct Feed System Into a Bowden Setup

Joe Mike Terranella published a video tutorial on how to change your direct feed extruder system into a Bowden 3D printer.  He used his Hictop Prusa clone to change it from direct feed to a Bowden setup but you can see many useful tips that can be used for other machines also.

Steve Builds a DIY Enclosure for His Prusa i3

Steve published his build instructions for plywood and acrylic enclosure to encase his Folger Tech Prusa i3.  The overall size is 19.5" wide x 22" tall x 23" deep.
Very useful DIY project for noise reduction and temperature control.

Upcycle your old Prusa into a laser cutter

Jon aka. Dr3vil used a parts form old Prusa Mendel and made a close chamber DIY laser cutter / engraver. He documented his project on Thingiverse.

Jon writes:
I wanted to add a laser cutter/engraver to my shop and decided it would make a good design challenge based on recycling a Prusa Mendel - Essentially a frame of 5/16” threaded rod and 8mm rod with LMU88 bearings. The CAD models had to be simple to print, make what you can, buy what you absolutely must, and source locally. Ultimately this project is a primer for building gen III of my 3D printer and a larger gen II laser of many watts. As such I’m sharing an ‘as-is’ , ‘it got me to operational’ dump of the project STL’s, sanding and part prep will be required.

Firmware is Marlin configured for CoreXY. It was helpful to set a dummy thermistor value as this allows using the print bead and hot-end outputs as switches from gcode (M104 S100 and M140 S100, send S0 to turn off). The fans and laser power supply are switched, as usual fan PWM modulates the laser through M106.

Gcode generation is either by Jtech Inkscape plugin or 305 Engineering’s raster generator. For engraving PCB’s I ended up modifying 305’s code, borrowing a page from Jtech. The first change was having laser off moves run at full speed, since acceleration is handled in firmware this shaves a lot of time off the job. The second change was to have a pause when turing the laser on or off as to allow the edges of the burn to be more defined, 200ms was enough. Finally adding pre and post geode safe the machine when done and get in position.

Prusa Gives Us Multi Material Upgrade with Dual and Quad Extrusion

Josef Prusa gives us a multi material extrusion upgrade for I3 Mk2 which looks great. It can come in dual and quad extrusion versions and will give you advanced options for your I3.

Ikea Footstool Hacked into a 3D Printer

StefanoG from Genova, Italy, used an Ikea footstool and some Prusa i3 Rework parts an made a 3d printer.

Prusa I3 Based Ultrasonic Laser Resin 3D Printer

Team of scientists hacked a Prusa I3 to develop new 3d printing process that uses laser to solidify ultrasound arranged resin fiber particle in a small vat.
A laser diode module was mounted on the print head to cure the resin, with an emitting power of 50 mW. The laser diode was housed in a shroud, and was focused using a single 6 mm diameter lens, with a focal length of 20 mm. The small vat sized at 35mmx35mm was filled with low viscosity photocurable resin (Spot-A LV) and commercially sourced glass microfibres (Lanxess MF7904, length 50 μm, 14 μm). Ultrasonic transducer gives resin floating fiber the shape and laser solidifies it.
It is a new form of stereolithography which could see some upscaling into more capable machines.

Here isa review by Thomas of a Malyan M150, a 3d printer that looks like a clone of a first version of Wanhao i3. it goes trough several problems and safety issues including possible false certification issues.

Looks like Wanhao issued a recall for their Replicator due to some safety problems. Surprise surprise.

Sega dual extruder powered with single motor

Here is an interesting dual extruder type where both extruders are powered only with one stepper motor. This setup makes the extruder much lighter and should improve any oozing issues.

The developer liusega writes:
The other problem with dual extruder is when one hotend is working, the second would cause ooze.
Ooze will make printing model caught a lot of unwanted results.
My solution is letting the second hotend to dock on a metal plate to block hot plastic drops from nozzle.
To do that first the second nozzle need to swing and raise above metal plate.
At the same time one filament need to be caught in between idler and extrusion gear teeth with enough pressure.

How to install simple and effective automatic bed leveling

GuruBrew has published this excellent video tutorial on how to make your own automatic print bed leveling.
It looks easy and it will help you with your calibration and improve print quality. It takes a normally closed micro switch and a small RC servo, customized Marlin firmware and 3d printed probe mechanism.

Using DC motors to replace steppers on x and y axis

Here is a new project of running a 3d printer with cheap DC servo motors. It was developed by misan from Spain and he used it successfully on x and y axis of his Prusa I3. Dc motors are controlled by Arduino Uno and the project is based on "servostrap" project. DC motors are cheap and can be found and salvaged in recyclable or scrap electronic device such as paper printers and others.

He made the code and bracket designs available. Thnx misan!

Project description:
This program uses an Arduino for a closed-loop control of a DC-motor.
  • Motor motion is detected by a quadrature encoder.
  • Two inputs named STEP and DIR allow changing the target position.
  • Serial port prints current position and target position every second.
  • Serial input can be used to feed a new location for the servo (no CR LF).
Pins used:
  • Digital inputs 2 & 8 are connected to the two encoder signals (AB).
  • Digital input 3 is the STEP input.
  • Analog input 0 is the DIR input.
  • Digital outputs 5 & 6 control the PWM outputs for the motor (I am using half L298 here).
  • Please note PID gains kp, ki, kd need to be tuned to each different setup.

Dual parking extruder by 3D Proto

Here is a dual extruder solution from 3D Proto where a non-printing extruder is parked outside the print area to prevent oozing which gives better print quality.
When a idle extruder is parked outside print area it also gives higher speeds and movement precision to working extruder. It also prevents possible scratching of one extruder on the printed object.
Very interesting solution.
There are some possible limitations on x-axis due to the width of assembly but it is maybe a minor inconvenience.
