How are large city and terrain map models 3d printed and assembled?

Massive collection of animated mechanical movements and devices
While I was looking for a design of an automatic windows opening mechanism that I could use on my workshop I found this little jam on the YouTube.
The channel is just named "thang010146" and contains big number of video animations which show various mechanical movements and internal working mechanics of different devices in many areas like construction, engineering, hydraulics, gears, cams, robotics and many more. There are new videos coming up frequently.
If you are hobbyist, maker, engineer or just curious this is very useful reference base for finding solutions or inspiration.

Abram Thau is 3d scanning people and printing figurines with homemade machines

When I bumped into Abram Thau at Metrix Createspace in Seattle's Capitol Hill, he showed me a few printed figurines, including a Storm Trooper (of the Star Wars variety), and I thought at first that he had printed them as duplicates of similar-sized commercial products. Not so: It turns out these are made-from-life, specifically from cos-players who have stood on Abram's human-suitable turntable (powered by a chicken rotisserie motor hooked to a 3-D printed pulley) while he scanned them in.
Thau's apartment is practically shouting distance from Metrix, but that pulley was made on a large Deltabot filament printer in the corner of his living room. (A living room usefully cluttered with tools, bottles of resin, projectors in various states of repair, and more printed objects.) More interesting still, Thau's figurines are produced with a home-built resin printer. Resin is messier to work with than the filament feedstock of RepRap/Makerbot style printers (and the resin itself has a slight odor), but it allows different results. Overhanging pieces are possible without requiring elaborate support pieces built into the mesh, and the resulting product can be noticeably smoother than typical filament printing, though all 3-D printing techniques are getting better. Thau didn't buy one of the commercially available resin printers, though (like FormLabs's), but instead decided to build his own out of scavenged and off-the-shelf components.
Budget concerns and improvisation rule the day (Thau is also a grad student, studying to be a middle school teacher): That means there's a book holding up the projector which is vital to curing the resin, and the printer's case is recycled from a previous one. The results look as good as the affordable commercial ones I've seen, and he's excited to teach others to make their own. Third-party resin makers and a robust market in used projectors mean that other hobbyists can follow his lead and turn their friends into figurines

cOssel delta 3d printer by Chris Dieringer
cOssel is a Rostock / Kossel derivative by Chris Dieringer. It does a few things differently from other deltas, still the central design and technology is the same. Main features are:
cOssel has dual reflective IR auto leveling, This feature is still experimental as most IR sensors have not been proven repeatable.

Rappy 3d printer powered with DC motors by Stellamove

RAPPY (Rapid Advanced Precision Print sYstem) is a 3d printer which is powered by DC motors instead the usual stepper motors.

DC motors are also commonly found inside toys, because it is cheap and powerful in spite of its small size. Of course, toys are not keen on precise control. So, how do we achieve a high accuracy such as in sophisticated robots? It is only possible with sophisticated controller, which also costs pretty expensive.

What we have achieved with RAPPY is precise DC motor control with simple system. We developed revolutionary software and embedded it into a very simple hardware which eventually works like a machine worth thousands of dollars. This is literally a quantum leap in DC motor control. Stratasys shows fully functional 3d printed skis
From video description:
Check out Stratasys founder, chairman and head of innovation Scott Crump braving the slopes as he tests what could be the world's first 3D printed skis. These skis are fully functional, built on a Fortus 3D Production System using Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) Technology and ULTEM 9085 resin.
Stratasys Engineer Dominic Mannella designed and built the skis at our Skunkworks facility. He picked ULTEM because it's a strong and stable thermoplastic that endures a wide range of temperature and moisture conditions -- even a Minnesota hillside in a polar-vortex winter.
The ability to 3D print low-volume end-use parts could be a boon in industries like sporting goods, where personalized ergonomics and custom aesthetics are attractive.

Printrbot introduces new full metal Simple 3d printer
Printrbot is well known for its low cost plywood printers. Over at Makezine there is a news that they are releasing the first full metal body machine, the metal Simple. It has larger print volume of 6″x 6″x 6″, Z-axis end-stop adjustment knob and a self-leveling bed. It looks good, and should be very sturdy.
