Using DIY 3D Printer for DIY Orthodontics

Amos Dudley was low on money and he had some crooked teeth. He decided to make his own DIY orthodontic alignment trays with a help of 3d scanner, 3d printer and vacuum forming table and was successful in correcting his teeth.

Here is the process he followed from his project description:

  • The dentist assesses your teeth for suitability for the procedure. Old-school bracket braces can move your teeth in basically any direction or rotation, but plastic aligners can only exert tipping / rotational forces on the teeth. When you put pressure on the crown of a tooth, the crown moves in that direction, and the root moves in the opposite direction (this is known as Begg’s tipping principle). Without being bonded to the tooth, plastic aligners also can’t do extrusion (pulling the tooth down and away from the maxillary arch).
  • The teeth are 3D scanned. This used to be done by taking an impression, making a mold/casting, and then sending the cast to be accurately scanned. Now, there’s in-office tools like iTero that scan the teeth from within the mouth.
  • The 3D model (usually an STL file) is taken into some proprietary orthodontic software, where the teeth are separated into separate objects. A technician plans out a route for the teeth to travel over the course of the procedure, so that they move but dont intersect one another.
  • A series of models is created from the planned route, each representing a step in the motion.
  • These models are 3D printed with high accuracy.
  • Thermoplastic aligner material is vacuum formed over the 3D printed models.
  • The plastic is manually trimmed away and the edges are smoothed, to create a non-irritating aligner.

For 3d printed part he used his own extensive modification of MendelMax 2 the "Minimal Mendel", but he writes that SLA machine would do a much better job.

DIY dentistry is not easy so you better think twice before trying it yourself.

Open Surgery 3D Printed Robot

Frank Kolkman developed a DIY surgical robot made with some off-the shelf electronics and 3d printed parts. It is a home-made version of a 2 million dollar laparoscopic surgery machine made for some 5000 USD.
Naturally, you can not perform real surgeries with it (yet) and it is controlled via PS3 controller, but it is a demonstration of what can be made with simple technology for a low price.

Linespace Tactile Interface for the Blind with 3D Printing Extruder

Linespace is an ingenious device that uses a 3d printing extruder to produce a large tactile interface for the blind. I love this project! This could be extremely useful for the blind people!

Project description:
Linespace is a tactile display system for blind users. The foundation of our system is a large 140x100cm display area, on which the system creates raised tactile lines with the help of a 3D printer. The foot switch allows users to enter text and issue commands by talking to the computer.

We use Linespace to give blind users access to the type of software packages that normally only sighted people can access, namely the type of software that helps them to make sense of complex data. So far, we have created a simple homefinder program, a spreadsheet program that can read and write Microsoft Excel, two simple games, and a simple programming environment.

One might say that Linespace is an interactive "visualization" system for the blind. The key to achieving this is Linespace large display as it allows displaying a lot of contents at once, where smaller display systems need to update screen contents. The use of lines (instead of the more common Braille dots) helps create visualizations.

The vision behind Linespace is to help blind users interact with and make sense of complex spatial data. It thereby intends to pick up the vision behind of Vannevar Bush's memex, Engelbart Online system, and Xerox PARC's personal computer, by investigating how we can recreate this type of interaction for blind users--how to use computers to help people think better.

In the video you see a user using this system to find homes in Berlin:

3D Printable Low Cost Stethoscope Developed by Tarek Loubani

Tarek Loubani, a doctor working in the Gaza strip developed a DIY 3d printable stethoscope that can be made for 4-5 USD or even less, but it works as good as 200 USD professional grade model.

Here is his talk at CCCamp15 worth watching if you are interested in this area and you want to see the development process and the need for such devices in hard conditions:

Free video webinar on 3d printing in medical industry

Here is a new free video webinar by Tyler Reid of GoEngineer on 3d printing in medical industry.
It is a great overview of current state of affairs in materials (types, certifications, features and sterilization), prototyping, fixtures, tooling, teaching aids, and production parts.
Well worth half an hour watching if you work in medical industry.

You can watch many more Tyler's webinars like:

Biorep prototypes

EnvisionTEC high end 3d printers and bioplotter

I was just looking around what is industry standard and I found couple of videos from EnvisionTEC. They have some fine and expensive machines BUT as technology goes, one day you will have it on YOUR desktop.

... now, while you may have your workshop machine, most of you probably won't need a bioplotter since it is currently used as sophisticated medical instrument for special cases... or maybe DIY biohacking will explode. Making implantable 3d objects and body mods ... sounds like SF but we will see what future holds ...

FingerReader is a 3d printable wearable device for visually impaired

The FingerReader is a wearable device that assists in reading printed text. It has a 3d printable housing and it is developed by MIT Media Lab, Fluid Interfaces Group.
It is a tool both for visually impaired people that require help with accessing printed text, as well as an aid for language translation.
Wearers scan a text line with their finger and receive an audio feedback of the words and a haptic feedback of the layout: start and end of line, new line, and other cues.
The FingerReader algorithm knows to detect and give feedback when the user veers away from the baseline of the text, and helps them maintain a straight scanning motion within the line.

3d printed human organs that generate electricity for medical implants from Uni of Iowa

Bioprinting is advancing rapidly, with many obstacles ahead, but at University of Iowa they are already planing to make "enhanced" 3d printed "superorgans" which also produce electricity that could be used for implanted (medical) devices.

Here is interview with Dr. Ibrahim Ozbolat, co-director of the University of Iowa's Advanced Manufacturing Technology Group.

Ozbolat told HuffPost Live's Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani that while current research is focusing on replacing failed organs, he's also interested in the prospect of developing a "brand new organ" that doesn't exist in nature but which could be transplanted to "enhance the functionality of the human body."
And he's thinking big. One possibility is an organ that generates electricity inside our bodies.
"For complicated organs -- for example, if the heart fails -- then you need a pacemaker. The pacemaker runs with batteries, and when the battery needs to be replaced, surgery is needed," he said. That procedure could be eliminated by creating "an organ that is going to be part of the human body and generate electricity that can run the heart."

Source: HuffPo - http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/06/09/bioprinting-new-organ-electricity-video_n_5473949.html

There is still long way to go before fully functional organs

You will not be able to shoot lightning bolts from your hands anytime soon ... but one day ... one day ...

3d Bioprinting introduction, possibilities, problems and current state of technology

All you wanted to know about bioprinting and 3d printing with living cells summarized in 20 minute video. Must-watch if you are interested in the topic. Wei gives great overview of the field and current state of bioprinting technology which is truly amazing with incredible future possibilities (and problems to be solved).

Speaker: Prof. Wei Sun, Tsinghua University / Xin Innovation Workshop,

Presentation held at Tel Aviv University, 19 - 20.5.2014.

I found presentation by Prof. Wei Sun in PDF format similar to the one in the video which is great reference material on bioprinting:

http://nsfam.mae.ufl.edu/Slides/Sun.pdf

Conclusions are important and probably there are many scientists working on it right now:

In future we need the following to ensure 3d printed organs:
  • A new generation of biomaterials - Bio-Ink: go with cells (structure as cell delivery medium), grow with cells (support as cell ECM) and function with cells (as biomolecules);
  • Developmental Engineering (vs. Developmental Biology) to fill the biological knowledge gap;
  • Bio-3DP manufacturing tools: viable, reliable and reproducible, and capable of making heterogeneous structures;
  • 4-D 3DP model: embedded time into Bio-3DP model: printing Stem Cells with control released molecules for complex tissues, Organs, Cellular Machines and Human-on-a-Chip devices

PERsonalised FOod using Rapid MAnufacturing for the Nutrition of elderly ConsumErs - 3d printed food for elderly and disabled

This is a first practical real-life application of 3d printed food that makes sense to me and probably has some commercial future. The project has a wide consortium and has received 3 million euro financing from EU FP/ program.

From project description:
The main idea of the PERFORMANCE project is to develop and validate a holistic, personalised food supply chain for frail elderly persons living either in nursing homes, ambient assisted living facilities or at home (visited by nursing services) facing swallowing and/or masticating problems.
The supply “chain” in this case will resemble a loop, with the elderly consumers forming the initial link (providing info on personal preference and needs) as well as the final link (consumption of the personalised food). As a result of the PERFORMANCE project, an overall concept will be available which allows the automated manufacture and supply of personalised, specially textured food for frail and elderly people.
The key question is: “How can personalised nutrition contribute to improving the health of frail elderly people facing swallowing and/or masticating problems and dignified aging in their sunset years?”
To answer this question, the PERFORMANCE concept will cover the whole supply chain from the food producer to the ready-to-eat meal at point of consumption – whether nursing home or at home. Focus will be put on personalised food for people with mastication and swallowing problems.
The main idea of the PERFORMANCE project is to develop and validate a holistic, personalised food supply chain for frail elderly persons living either in nursing homes, ambient assisted living facilities or at home (visited by nursing services) facing swallowing and/or masticating problems.

Update (21.2.2016.):

So, what has become of this project? Are there any results? It's hard to find any. I found only this video and article that presents a tomato sauce dispenser that doesn't look like a 3d printer:

http://www.3ders.org/articles/20160215-foodjet-expands-production-capacity-to-3d-print-whole-meals-for-the-elderly.html

Was this project successful? Or maybe it was just a waste of tax payers money ... I would like to know more ...
