Real-time Wireframe 3D Printing Directly from CAD

Researchers at Cornell made a modified 3d printer that prints on-the-fly as the model is developed in a CAD software. It has 6 axis of movement with mist cooling and cutter head to produce wire-frame objects.

Project description:
On-the-Fly Print is a 5DOF modelling and design prototype that allows the user to design 3D models digitally while having a low-fidelity physical model printed in parallel. Our software starts printing features as soon as they are created and updates the physical model as needed. Users can quickly check the design in a real usage context by removing the partial physical print from the printer and replacing it afterwards to continue printing.

DICE: small, fast and strong!

Rene Jurack developed the DICE, a small surprise among all the simillar designs of new machines. It is compact, very rigid and very fast featuring many interesting solutions.

Mechanical:
  • casing: 20x20x20cm small 
  • build volume: X90 Y75 Z 80 
  • movable distance: X98 Y75 Z80, so the print head can move beside the print bed, e.g. for anti-ooze-scripts at print start core XY-system 
  • linear movement with high quality linear rails (HIWIN MGN9R) in X, Y, Z full metal hotend E3D-V6 1,75mm in bowdensetup 
  • PEI-coated perma-printbed made out of precision-milled warmcasted aluminium ( EN AW 5083 ) and recessed silicone heater  direct-drive-extruder (MK8) 
  • massive enclosure milled out of 4mm thick akuminium, all bores in DXF included
  • XY-plain is laser cut out of 2mm thick stainless steel sheet, all bores in DXF included

  • 4x most silent TMC2100 stepperdrivers, passive cooled 
  • despite the small footprint, use of full-fledged NEMA17 steppermotors for sufficient output reserve 
  • heated bed (230V / 60W), with recessed silicone heater 
  • motor supply voltage: 19V 
  • total power input: 230V / 0,65A at max
Miscellaneous:
  • more silent than 40dB in realistical and normal operation (unadorned measures!) 
  • up to 833mm/s travelspeed 
  • up to 12.000mm/s² acceleration 
  • not until 10.000mm/s² acceleration and 100mm/s, ghosting becomes barely visible 
  • junction deviation up to 0,5mm tested 
  • the complete X-carriage (real print-setup) weighs only 160g 
  • the complete X- and Y-carriages with all mounted parts (real print-setup) weighs only 290g 
  • Hotend mounted with 2 screws, fast interchangeable 
  • bowdenlength is only 35cm (complete from MK8 to the thermal barrier in the hotend)

LiteFab Open Source DLP 3D Printer

LiteFab is an rugged open source DLP 3D printer you can build yourself at a low cost and which comes with an excellent step-by-stem construction guide.
The cost for this project is some 400-500 USD plus the DLP projector which you can buy new or used which will cost you some 50 - 1000 USD extra. For this build the developer used Acer h6510bd.

The supporting structure is made from CNC cut wood, aluminum rails and 3d printed parts. It looks very hackable, which is encouraged by the developer.

This machines is developed by Instructables user that goes by name of bongoboy23. Cool name bro! Thnx for this project!

Some of the features of this design:
  • Quick removable vat
  • FlexVat design means no secondary action needed for peeling parts off vat. For example, the Form1 pulls the vat down on one side to peel parts off the vat. The FEP film used in a flexvat, being flexible, peels as it flexes. This film also has a much longer lifetime then standard vats, which means less often replacement of the vat.
  • Quick removable bed
  • Adaptable for use with any projector 
  • Large vat allows for a large build area
  • Nice open area for easy access to components, for easier maintenance and modification
  • Opensource! All the design files are provided.

nUnitled 3D Printer and Giova's Extruder from Italy

nUnitled 3d printer and Giova's extruder are DIY  machines developed in 2015 from Italy which are low cost and feature some interesting solutions.
The main feature of this project is its anti-wobble system which consists in the separation of Y and Z axis from Z screws. Y axis can moves freely on Z axis, because it's leaning on Z screws. This innovation avoids the transmission of Z screws wobble to Z axis.
This machines has wooden support structures.
Giova's extruder aims to be light and low-cost extruder based on the cheap 28BYJ-48 motor. It is relatively weak but it works.

Educational TETRIX 3D Printer

Tetrix is a new 3d printer design based on needs of schools to provide simple and affordable teaching tool.



























Here is the project description:
The TETRIX 3D-Printer was designed as an educational tool for middle and high school technology students, robotics teams, and adults. The purpose of constructing the printer is to train people's building, tool usage, electronics, CAD, and programming skills with a single project. You also get a 3D-printer once you're done!
The printer design is based on TETRIX parts, which are designed by PITSCO and used in the FIRST Tech Challenge robotics competition. The printer also utilizes elements of various RepRap printer designs, such as the Printrboard control system. The design is completely open-source, so feel free to personalize and alter your printer.
The overall cost of the printer is about $640, and the educational value is priceless! The majority of the cost is attributed to the TETRIX parts, but the high accuracy of the pre-drilled, pre-sized aircraft-grade aluminum saves time and reduces error, which outweighs the price.

Prusa I3 Based Ultrasonic Laser Resin 3D Printer

Team of scientists hacked a Prusa I3 to develop new 3d printing process that uses laser to solidify ultrasound arranged resin fiber particle in a small vat.
A laser diode module was mounted on the print head to cure the resin, with an emitting power of 50 mW. The laser diode was housed in a shroud, and was focused using a single 6 mm diameter lens, with a focal length of 20 mm. The small vat sized at 35mmx35mm was filled with low viscosity photocurable resin (Spot-A LV) and commercially sourced glass microfibres (Lanxess MF7904, length 50 μm, 14 μm). Ultrasonic transducer gives resin floating fiber the shape and laser solidifies it.
It is a new form of stereolithography which could see some upscaling into more capable machines.

Lum Continuous Build Belt Platform 3D Printer

Andreas Bastian developed this very interesting 3d printer with continuous build belt platform. Since it is a movable belt you could, in theory, print continuous or infinitely big objects. Yes, it is a DIY project and it is in development so the builds are rough but the concept is innovative.
The name "Lum" is a version of  the word "loom" as the developer is known for his work in textile-like 3d printed structures.
