Tiny homemade 3d printer from Germany

Just a printer I found on one German website. Homemade and undocumented. I like the aesthetics of the design ... it looks ... well ... German ... shiny aluminum and wires ... just cool ...

Update(20.2.2014.):

Tiny now has a heated bed milled out of aluminum. Heating is done by 6x 12V/40W heating cartridges as they are now often used in hotends. Dimensions are 100 x 80mm, the thermistor is immersed directly in the middle.

I contacted, the maker, Thomas and asked him is he going to open source the design, he answered:
Not sure about open sourcing it yet. Not that I don’t want to make it open, but a lot of parts where made on the fly without proper CAD modeling.
But I’m planing to swap the wood milled parts for aluminum ones as soon as the design proves to work for a few months, maybe I’ll create proper files then and publish them.
If anyone wants to build it and needs specific measures or information on the printer I’m happy to help out.

I found this combo machine from Germany while following Mathias Dietz on Youtube, since he made a software that powers it.
It is 3d printer, engraver and mill hybrid.

faBrickation 3d printing with volume replaced wth Lego blocks by Hasso Plattner Institute




faBrickation a new approach to rapid prototyping of functional objects, such as the body of a head-mounted display. The key idea is to save 3D printing time by automatically substituting sub-volumes with standard building blocks — in our case Lego bricks.
When making the body for a head-mounted display, for example, getting the optical path right is paramount. Users thus mark the lens mounts as “high-resolution” to indicate that these should later be 3D printed. faBrickator then 3D prints these parts. It also generates instructions that show users how to create everything else from Lego bricks.
If users iterate on the design later, faBrickator offers even greater benefit as it allows re-printing only the elements that changed. We validated our system at the example of three 3D models of functional objects. On average, our system fabricates objects 2.44 times faster than traditional 3D printing while requiring only 14 minutes of manual assembly.

Making a new control system for a machine is often a slow and tedious task. Maybe you already have a 3 axis stage, and you already know how to move it around. But what if you want to add a camera and use it for position feedback? You'd have to redesign the whole hardware layer.
I'll talk about some ways I've built modularity into control systems for machines so that you can quickly iterate on different kinds of machine systems without getting stuck in hardware land forever. This includes connecting synchronized nodes across a network and importing legacy nodes for things like, say, an old pressure box you found in the trash and has rs232 in.
Down with gcode! Long live machine control.

She also spoke about some high end CNC machines being monitored by gyroscope, sensors and GPS so they can not be moved without authorization to prevent them begin exported to blacklisted countries. New Polypropylene based food-safe 3d printing filament by GermanRepRap

Polypropylene (PP) filament is semi-crystalline thermoplastics which is produced according to US FDA regulations and the relevant EU standards. Basically, it is made so you can print plates, cups, beakers, food containers, spoons and other food serving utensils.
This filament can be used with all printers that have a 3mm hotend and it comes in black color (very appetizing color). 2,1kg spool is priced at 99,95 euro and the 750g spool is priced at 54,95 euro.
Now, maybe the material itself is food safe, however, when you push it trough the hot extruder and deposit it two food un-safe things could happen:
  1. The 3d printed object could have small (micro) pores where bacteria could develop and get into your food
  2. You could get some heavy metals residue from your brass hot end.
The topic of food safety and 3d printed thermoplastics should be researched further, I don't think that we will see much 3d printing for everyday food containers on regular basis. Probably the most people will use it as novelty gimmicky thing.

Still, it is good to see that food related filament technology is advancing.

Advantages of a timing belt driven Z-axis:
Most 3D printer systems use a lead screw or a threaded rod as drive for the Z-axis. Backlash and imbalance cause errors in X- and Y-direction when moving the Z-axis. These errors are visible as vertical pattern on the printed object.
When using two timing belts as attachment for the Z-axis these errors can cleverly be avoided. Consequently the Z-axis is nearly error free, thus the layers of a printed object lie perfectly on top of each other.

There will be single and dual extruder versions, currently they are on pre-order: First delivery in February 2014.

RAMPS v1.4.2 open source control board

RAMPS version 1.4.2 open source controller electronics board is available.

The new RAMPS 1.4.2 promises significantly fewer failures and has other improvements , such as 2 motor connections per socket or a labeling slots . The RepRap Arduino Mega Pololu Shield (short: RAMPS ) is the centerpiece of a RepRap 3D printer . On the board there are all electronic components such as mosfets transistors , fuses, plug-in connections for the Pololu stepper motor drivers, etc. Previous versions of the shelf had the problem that the electronics are often failed.

The RAMPS 1.4.2 is equipped with automotive fuses instead of the usual thermal fuse now. These new backups are less sensitive to heating . In order to enhance availability, the strength of the traces of 35 microns were increased to 70 microns and its course optimized. The limit switches now have a capacitor that prevents accidental turn off .

Further improvements can be found at the bases for the Pololu motor driver . You have the RAMPS 1.4.2 through two ports and can use it to drive two motors per connection . There is now a slot for external reset, which has advantages when the RAMPS is installed in an enclosure , since you do not have to do without the reset button . By labels on the slots for a warmed bed , fan and extruder also the wiring is simple .

Our RAMPS 1.4.2 is of course open source. The board is a fork of the open-source project of ultimachine / Ramps 1.4 ( https://github.com/GermanRepRap/Ramps-1.4.2 ) and retrieve in Github .

It can be applied to all RepRap 3D printer with RAMPS electronics, such as the PRotos V2, use and runs on RAMPS 1.3 and 1.4 firmware with no change , so it can easily be exchanged for existing RAMPS .

Constructable - laser pointer guided laser cutter

Smart people of Uni Postdam made this hand guided laser cutter. User draws with laser pointer and laser cutter follows the path. There are different laser pointer types for different materials which trigger different operations by laser cutter.

The globally unique AKF process makes use of 3D CAD files, which are read in directly by the freeformer. After start-up, everything else takes place automatically. A nozzle closure with piezo technology builds up the desired component layer by layer from minuscule plastic droplets. During this process, the item under construction is moved by a component carrier with three or five axes.
