IcePick Delta 3d printer made with no linear rods or bearings

IcePick Delta 3d printer is a design without linear rods or bearings and with sturdy wooden frame. This approach lowers the total price and makes the machine parts more locally sourcable.
The project is developed by TTN and Matt Kimball and is still in intensive development stage.




From project description:
Icepick Delta is a open source 3d printer that was inspired by the Firepick Delta. The project aim is to build a 3d printer with no linear rods or linear bearings. I wanted a delta 3d printer, but was put off by linear rail and rod prices.

When the project started, the Firepick Delta files had not been released yet (they're on github now). The icepick is based on the Firepick Delta, but designed from the ground up.

The repapiness of this design is very high, leading to a smaller number of parts required, in turn lowering cost.

The build height looks to be about 160mm at the moment at a diameter of 200mm. Currently, printing speeds and acceleration have to stay low to avoid backlash. Another option to be explored is braided fishing line.

At the moment, the firmware is functional, but when going outside a certain radius (reachable points), it will decide to home that particular arm. Upper arm homing angle firmware needs some work.
The target printable area will be at least the standard 200mm cube.

FLUX multitool Delta 3d printer




Flux is a new delta 3d printer that has easily exchangeable tool heads and integrated 3d scanner. Currently available tool heads are 3d printing head and laser engraver head with several modules under development like: a dual extruder, a ceramics extruder, and a pastry extruder.

SeeMeCNC PartDaddy 4,5 meter tall pellet fed Delta 3d printer





SeeMeCNC is presenting their 15 feet (4,5 meter) tall Delta 3d printer  named "PartDaddy" at MakerFaire Detroit. It will have a changeable  6,35mm or 7,25mm printing nozzle which will be fed by pellets. They have planed for it to bepropane powered but they gave it up for safety reasons.
It will be interesting to if such big FDM printers will find a market niche.

Genkei gigantic 4 meter tall Magna Delta 3d printer from Japan







Genkei is comapny from Japan that produces 3d printers. They made this enormous 4 meter tall Delta 3d printer. I think it is not designed to be real production printer, but more of a demonstration and promotional project.
It will use pelleted material for extrusion instead of filament. It makes perfect sense for this size of machine.

The 3d printer will be on display at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music Museum, as part of an “Materializing II” exhibition that runs from Saturday, July 19 until Friday, August 8.

ServoStock Delta 3d printer powered by servos and Bowler protocol





This Delta is heavily modified Kossel derivative which uses DC motor powered servos instead of stepper motors developed by team led by mad.hephaestus.

On each axis is a small board containing a magnetic encoder, and a continuous rotation servo. With this setup, the makers are able to get 4096 steps per revolution with closed loop control that can drive the servo to with ±2 ticks.
The electronics and firmware are fully redesigned configuration when compared to the usual 3D printers. The motherboard uses a Pic32 running at 80MHz. In parallel with hardware, the communication between the host and printer has been completely redesigned, instead of g-code, the team is using the Bowler protocol for sending packets over serial, TCP/IP, or just about any other communications protocol you can think of.

The final aim is to create much cheaper powerful 3d printer that would cost in 200 - 300 USD range.

There is lot of discussion on the project page and on hackaday about viability of this technology. I don't know much about all the stuff they use, so it will be lot of new stuff to learn. Maybe it will be the standard in the future.

Hot to build DIY Delta from junk matrix printers and a scanner

This homemade Delta  was built by Hesam with parts from old paper dot matrix printers and scanner. Frame is made from 16mm MDF board. MDF and some steel parts are cut on CNC but there are no 3d printed parts. It is controlled by Arduino Leonardo.

Primary design guidelines were:
  • Build volume: 200x200x200 mm
  • Footprint: 600x650 mm
  • Print surface: 200x200 mm heated glass which never moves.
  • Mass of end effector with hotend: less than 600 grams.
  • Positioning speed: up to 80 mm/s in all 3 directions.
  • Positioning accuracy: at least 10 steps/mm in all 3 directions.
  • Simplicity and use of recycled parts
  • Hardware cost: less than 400 USD.


Sliders were made three Epson LQ 2170 dot matrix printers bought from scrapyard for less than 20$


Heated build platform made from Epson flatbed scanner and heating element which can heat it up to 120 C and is controlled by thermostat

Delta Twister ultra low cost DIY 3d printer with no CNC or printed parts

Even more low cost wood frame Deltas on Instructables. This one is from user Braden Petno and can me made for less the 400 dollars. There are no 3d printed or CNC produced parts, so it is an advantage if you don't have access to them.

cOssel delta 3d printer by Chris Dieringer

cOssel is a Rostock / Kossel derivative by Chris Dieringer. It does a few things differently from other deltas, still the central design and technology is the same. Main features are:
  • OpenRail for linear motion 
  • Dual hot end configuration 
  • Bowden extruder designed for geared steppers 
  • Mechanically fixed heated bed, vs. binder clips
  • cOssel attempts to enable a low-power, non-contact automatic leveling sensor as an alternative to using a retractable mechanical switch as used in other deltas. This feature is still experimental as most IR sensors have not been proven repeatable.

Open source DIY metal 3d printer made with MIG welder




This is important step forward for the entire field: open source sub 1500 USD metal printer. It can be mad by anyone with some experience. It is based on static MIG welder and moving invert delta 3d printer platform as build bed.

Project was developed by Michigan Tech's Open Sustainability Technology Lab: Gerald C. Anzalone, Chenlong Zhang, Bas Wijnen, Paul G. Sanders and Joshua M. Pearce. Kudos to you gentlemen!

Technical progress in the open-source self replicating rapid prototyper (RepRap) community has enabled a distributed form of additive manufacturing to expand rapidly using polymer-based materials. However, the lack of an open-source metal alternative and the high capital costs and slow throughput of proprietary commercialized metal 3-D printers has severely restricted their deployment. The applications of commercialized metal 3-D printers are limited to only rapid prototyping and expensive finished products. This severely restricts the access of the technology for small and medium enterprises, the developing world and for use in laboratories. This paper reports on the development of a <$2000 open-source metal 3-D printer. The metal 3-D printer is controlled with an open-source micro-controller and is a combination of a low-cost commercial gas-metal arc welder and a derivative of the Rostock, a deltabot RepRap. The bill of materials, electrical and mechanical design schematics, and basic construction and operating procedures are provided. A preliminary technical analysis of the properties of the 3-D printer and the resultant steel products are performed. The results of printing customized functional metal parts are discussed and conclusions are drawn about the potential for the technology and the future work necessary for the mass distribution of this technology.
